Product description

From Publishers Weekly

McGraw's (Love You Forever) cutesy caper opens as Karen tapes "Lost Cat" posters to neighborhood phone poles after her pet, Mister Whiskers, fails to come home one night. In the slapstick scenario that follows, Karen repeatedly answers her doorbell to find people bearing homeless cats. Though her feline brood grows to 37, none resembles Mister Whiskers (the girl forgot to include a description of her cat on the poster). Rather precious pastel renderings show the kitties snuggling up to Karen and her incredibly accommodating parents. McGraw does inject some humor with a depiction of how some of these curious critters "helped Karen with her homework" and "helped Dad with the laundry." An outlandish spread shows Karen's dream of a flying cat and three airborne mice, while two monotonous spreads present individual portraits of the menagerie, each labeled with a name bequeathed by Karen. In a rather simplistic turn of plot, Karen and her parents are able to return each cat to its owner by matching them to other "Lost Cat" notices. Then, on cue, Mister Whiskers appears that evening at their door, bringing this tale to a predictable close. Ages 5-8. (Oct.)

From School Library Journal

PreSchool-Grade 2-Karen is worried when her cat doesn't come home one evening. Early the next morning, she makes lost-cat posters and places them around her neighborhood, but forgets to include a description. Soon the doorbell begins to ring, as people bring felines that they had found in the area to her house. By the time her parents wake up, there are 37 of them. Karen spends the day caring for the animals and that night, she dreams about cats. The next morning, she goes to the store to get more food and, on her way home, finds 37 lost-cat posters, each with a picture of one of her guests. She and her mother return all of the pets to their rightful owners. That night, Mister Whiskers comes home, much to Karen's delight. Colorful, realistic paintings support the well-written story. Young animal lovers will enjoy this entertaining book.

NEW RELEASE! Life's too short to concentrate on just one genre, and lately, McGraw has hopped from the kid-lit sandbox to the grown-ups' steamy hot tub with "The Knife Thrower's Wife" a mystery/domestic-suspense novel.

Sheila McGraw was born in Toronto and began her career as an illustrator and copywriter for retail fashion outlets and editorial publications. In 1986 she was approached by Firefly Books to illustrate "Love You Forever" written by Robert Munsch. As that book achieved success she wrote and/or illustrated several craft and children's books. McGraw's "Papier-Mache for Kids" was awarded the prestigious Benjamin Franklin Award. Her artwork has been widely exhibited and represented by the Loch Galleries in Canada.

The best seller Love You Forever has been voted Most Iconic Book Cover in a readers' poll conducted by CBC. Thank you to everyone who voted for Love You Forever.

Sheila McGraw is painting and writing in Houston Texas. She is the mother of 3 grown sons.
