The characters are so carefully created they become real individuals who you fear for and admire for their tenacity, innovative solutions, bravery, and most important humanity. You won't be disappointed if post-apocalyptic struggles and sci-fi zombie-like monsters are your thing!

Another great read by Patton, Spoiler alert for those who don't want to know what's in the book

This one starts with Chase, Katie, Col Crawford and Martinez along with Rangers and Marines have just made it out of the overrun Tinker AFB via a C-130 and the Navy fighters who made it all possible.

Sgt. Scott, Igor, Martinez and Irina are looking for Chase in a Bradley Fighting Vehicle.

Rachel and her fighter pilot have been shot down and landed in the wilds of Idaho. They made it to a lake but the pilot, Ben, broke a leg. They have wolves around but no walkers. The wolves become a big problem.

Of course John and Katie are going after Rachel. Its over a thousand miles to Idaho. They do have Sat phone contact with Pearl Harbor and Jessica who's a petty officer and a whiz with the computers and satellite feeds. She's going to direct them to Idaho.

So begins another great read by Patton.

This one has John, Katie, Dog, Col Crawford, Sgt. Scott, Martinez, Irina, Igor, the Russians, Dodge City, a car that John and Katie make the run with, loads of the walking dead, wolves, a Rachel in the wilds fighting to stay alive, a dead pilot, the Russians hunting John, the Russians who have taken over American bases in the Western Part of America, a traitor in Australia an old friend of Johns named Lucas, his mission, the Aussie SAS, a fight in Dodge City, Hind Helo's, a snow storm, death, explosions, a man who might be immune to the plague, a plan by Irina to get a Helo that Martinez can fly so she and the others can get to John in Idaho, a John and Katie making it to Idaho, a wolf attack and John, Katie, Dog and Rachel finally reuniting after one helluva running rescue.

Five Stars and then some. Waiting for the next novel.

5.0 out of 5 stars Not as action packed but equally as great!

This book in the series is a bit more calm than most of the others on the action front. Don't get me wrong, there's still plenty of action going on, but it's not nonstop like some of the previous books have been. I think it's a great change of pace! We get to see a bit more of the emotional and mental struggle the characters are going through at this point in addition to the daily fight to survive.

Our beloved characters are still here, and we spend quite a bit of time with all of them. We learn a bit more about some of their internal thoughts and workings, which just makes them even better. There are some interesting things we find out about our Russian friends that could take the story in several directions. It will be fascinating to see how it plays out.

The book does end on a cliffhanger, because Mr. Patton loves to torture us like that. In his defense, he's quite exceptional at it and knows how to leave his readers breathlessly waiting for more, and stalking his Facebook page to make sure he's writing and not sleeping or doing any other trivial things most people do. The book must come first! Well, after the real Dog.

These are amazing books. I always tell people about them any chance I get. They hold your attention, they draw you in, they make it all come unbelievably real, the way a great book should. This book in the series does not disappoint. If you've read them thus far, you know what you're in for and are going to enjoy the ride. If you're considering picking up these books, do it! As a zombie hater, I love them and without a doubt consider Dirk Patton one of the best authors I've read in a very long time, in ANY genre! I'm so, so glad I picked up the first one somewhat by accident. It's been a very happy accident, indeed! I can't wait for the next one, and the one after that, and the one after that, and the one after...

2.0 out of 5 stars Voodoo Plague ran out of steam...

**WARNING: CONTAIN SPOILERS**

My anticipation for V Plague book 8 (Recovery) was met with extreme disappointment, especially after the seven highly successful books that preceded this one. Patton should have stopped and wrapped the series up in book 6, but he kept going…the result? a boring and slow snoozefest. Yes, V Plague now joins hundreds of ZA novels out there that became stale after revealing the mysteries surrounding the virus origin, the extent of its effects on the infected, and finally the cure/vaccine.

Things went downhill when the fighter jet transporting Rachel was shot down at the end of Book 7: Indestructible. This obviously set up a mission for our hero John Chase to find and rescue her. For me this plot device was forced and triggered intentionally to drag out the story…

In the first 3-4 books, Patton had superb plot lines going; John desperately trying to find this wife Katie while having to deal with adversity in some instances more dangerous than the infected: human (non-infected) behavior taking a turn for the worst amidst the chaos. To recall a few: The Reverent, a crazy religious cult leader using people’s fear of the ZA apocalypse to control and exert power over them- a disturbed individual who killed anyone who threatens his power; Roach the psychopath who left death in his wake on his mission to exact revenge on John and Rachel; Rednecks abducting woman with the intention of force breeding the ongoing survival of the human race. I think this is what made the books so appealing; Patton’s ability to masterfully theorize in this work of fiction the evil actions some will commit in an attempt to exploit such catastrophe. What additionally made the first six books such an exhilarating read was the unrelenting and fast paced action sequences, each one hitting you full force. When these plot avenues were exhausted and came to an end, the series should have ended. I now feel V Plague have nothing left.

Book 8: Recovery. The first 8 chapters were a tedious read and difficult to get through. John and his group of survivors decide the casino (in which Katie was held hostage previously be a group of rednecks) is a good place to regroup and recuperate. The chapters covers the pointless processes the characters undertake to restore the casino’s electricity, clearing the rooms of infected, and finding clean clothing! Eight uneventful and pointless chapters. The characters actions is described with lengthy and dull description. In the first series of books I appreciated and didn’t mind Patton’s detailed description because it provided vivid imagery, and you knew that an awesome breathtaking action sequence is about the follow momentarily. However, the detailed descriptions in Recovery are out of place and just plain boring. What happens in these 8 chapters could have been reduced the one chapter- the first chapter.

It gets worse. Rachel and her pilot escape their shot down fighter jet by ejecting and parachuting into a rugged forest terrain. They hardly touched the ground and are stalked by wolves! I couldn’t help but feel as if this was taken straight out of Liam Neeson’s 2011 movie The Grey: “After their plane crashes in Alaska, six oil workers are led by a skilled huntsman to survival, but a pack of merciless wolves haunts their every step.” (imdb.com). Regardless of the accuracy of my suspicion, The Grey stuck in my head, which completely spoiled the wolf stalking plot for me. If you haven’t seen The Grey, you might find this story-line appealing.

In book 7: Indestructible I complained that John and Katie’s connection as husband and wife, long lost and recently united lovers was not strong enough. They lacked emotional connection which was strange, especially after all the hell John went through to find her. Well what’s the saying, be careful what you wish for. In book 8 Patton could have spared us John and Katie’s vain romance, especially in a ZA novel that is supposed to be gritty. In book 8 before they get of an aircraft, his kisses Katie. Before they get on an aircraft, he kisses Katie. Before he takes a s***t, he kisses Katie. After taking a s***t, he kisses Katie. Okay I am exaggerating but you catch me drift. Don’t let me even start with the cringe worthy dialog between them which caused many massive eye roll moments; Katie basically became an annoying one dimensional character with her playful one-liner insults directed at John, “stop whining like a little bitch” or “you are smarter then you look”. Really? And what was that exchange between Martinez and Irina? Don’t get me wrong, I do not have anything against gay people/relationships but where is Patton heading with this? John and Katie’s relationship is understandable, he encountered many dangers to find her. A love plot for Rachel will make sense, she needs to get over John. But Martinez and Irina, that is not making sense at all…

I am not ignorant of the vast and positive 4 and 5 star rated reviews bestowed on this book. My 2 star rated review reminds me of the negative reviews aimed at the highly popular (but terrible) Fifty Shades of Grey books. No one cares about a negative review of a book that is a best seller worldwide and consequently converted in an equal terrible movie that was a box-office hit. Be as it may, I am done with the V Plague books. If you do take this review to mind, I strongly recommend that you read the Arisen Series by Michael Stephen Fuchs. That is the only ZA novel I have read that that doesn’t run out of steam.

Patton has succeeded, yet again, in providing his readers with an installment in VP that delivers the thrills and massive amounts of action packed fights that are unique to this particular series.
True to form, his novels pick up precisely where the former left off, sending the reader right back into the action.
It's difficult for me to say much without giving the entire book away, but Patton has figured out how to provide readers with a continuing story (I mean seriously, 8 books! 8!) that not only becomes more elaborate as it progresses but he has also found new ways of doing away with the infected. It's always interesting to see what fresh new tricks Patton has planned for John to execute on his enemies.
In short, I love this series. I love the characters, the plots, (I'm intrigued to see where Patton will be going with the recent developments of the infected in future installments), and I also love that even though it's looking like the Voodoo Plague series isn't about to slow down anytime soon, that I'm still just as excited for the new releases as I was in the beginning. If you haven't read Voodoo Plague, just do it already. Meet John, Rachel and Dog, I guarantee they'll take you on an adventure you won't soon forget.

Just finished and like the others, this book is a juggernaut that just keeps going, keeps getting better and the suspense builds until you read the last sentence and have to wait for the next to be released. Some complain that this book didn't advance the storyline at all, but the story is about John and the things he's going through primarily. Other characters that are not involved with him during current events don't need to be talked about in a story that lives and dies with him. And John is very much alive (with Katie and Dog) to rescue Rachel. The action and events that take place are believable and the author isn't just rehashing his previous scenarios. Yes, the general them is the same, but the environment and dangers are very different and need to be handled differently than in previous books. For me this was a great book that I was dissapointed to have end and thoroughly enjoyed every chapter. John's tired, both physically and emotionally and I think you can see it in his actions. Can't wait for Book 9 (Precipice) to come out in another month or so!

4.0 out of 5 stars Still good, but bit of a stall for the series compared to the other volumes

I'm a fan of the series, but this volume was a good bit slower than the others. For an unnecessary percentage of the story, John and Katie are driving cross-country. The road descended and curved to the left. I drove really fast. We stopped for gas and shot some zombies. The road climbed and curved to the right. I drove really fast. We stopped for gas and shot some zombies. On and on, for the majority of the book. Okay - we get it. It started to feel like one of those scenes from a bad horror movie where the victim is running down the middle of the street with a car barreling down the road behind them. The camera angle changes again and again, but somehow the speeding car never manages to catch the running victim. It just never seems to get there. That's how I'd describe this installment of the V Plague series - it just never seems to get there. Hoping Patton turns up the heat and ends the series with a flourish of brilliance in the next installment.

These books by Dirk Patton just keep getting better. In this book John goes off to find Rachel, and Katie is along for the ride. What a ride it is! All of the usual dangers are around, but new ones are also added. I stayed up late into the night to finish this book I have already bought the next book in the series, Precipice. It is the ninth book in the series. I highly recommend Recovery: V Plague Book 8.

5.0 out of 5 stars Still Strong, Keep Reading

This is book number 8 in the series/serial and it's still going strong. If you liked the pace, plot and characters from the earlier books you're going to like this book just as well. This is a single continuous and very long story that is still fresh and exciting. I pre-order the next book for my Kindle as soon as Amazon makes it possible to do that. The author says the story will continue until it reaches it's own end and I hope that isn't any time soon.

Remember, this is a serial novel, so don't start with this as the first Voodoo Plague book you read. Start with the first book, "Unleashed" and read forward.

Also, these books have absolutely nothing to do with VooDoo. One of the books names the cause for the zombies as "The Voodoo Plague" and that's pretty much it. The name "Voodoo" just disappears from the series except in the titles of the books. Even there its called "V Plague".
