I recently added a number of Ring security devices to my home. This included a spotlight cam overlooking my home’s driveway. My home has a mesh wifi extension system, and all of the Ring devices were connecting in one manner or another to my network.

The problem was with the spotlight cam which could only seem to make a weak connection. When I would check the device health through the Ring app, I would generally find an RSSI (received signal strength indicator) value somewhere in the -70s. Occasionally it would be in the high -60s. Once it even clocked in at an awful -80. But mostly it was in the -70s which wasn’t great. Audio and video were extremely choppy and getting a live view was a 50/50 proposition at best.

So I picked up this chime pro in the hopes it would help matters. It did. While I was hoping for more robust results, with the Chime Pro the RSSI value of the spotlight cam is now consistently in the mid -50s which makes the audio/video much smoother and getting a live view on the app is much more consistent.

I rate at only four stars due to an aggravating set up experience. What should have been a 5 minute plug and play set up took me an hour of going around in circles. I completed the set up process several times with the chime stating it was connected to my wifi network, only the device showed as offline in the app and unusable. This happened multiple times before it finally connected and I was able to go into the app to connect the spotlight cam. Another half hour of aggravation commenced as a similar “going around in circles” experience occurred before the cam finally connected to the chime. I even had to haul out the ladder to press the reset button on the cam a couple times. Ugh. An hour of my time utterly wasted. I had similar experiences with setting up the other Ring devices, having to go through the set up process multiple times before setup was actually successful.

All that said everything is now connected and functioning properly and I’m pleased with the entire system. Overall I would rate the Ring system at around four stars. The set up experience should be more plug and play, but once past the aggravating set up experience the system works great.

If you’re looking for a surveillance system for your home, Ring should be on your list of considered products. Noted issues aside, I would recommend.

UPDATE 9/18/2020: I’ve had the unit eight days now. I went away for a couple of days and it was working fine. I get home and the RSSI values of the two devices I have connected through the Chime Pro have, for no apparent reason, fallen into the -70s. I wasn’t impressed. So I go and reboot the thing, only to run into the same issues as I initially had. It took about five tries, each time taking about 4-5 minutes, for the stupid thing to finally connect to my home wifi. Happily the RSSI values of the Chime-linked devices are now back in a healthy range in the -40s and -50s. Actually slightly better than previously. But I will now wait and see if the RSSI on these two devices will inexplicably plummet again. This product should be set-it-and-forget-it. If I need to go through this nonsense once a week I’ll be reducing the rating to one star. For now, I’m reducing my rating to three stars and rescinding my product recommendation pending further results with this product. Stay tuned for further updates.

UPDATE 9/30/2020 — one starring this product. RSSI values of my chime-linked devices have once again fallen dramatically, for no apparent reason. So I’ll have to reboot the stupid thing. Ugh. Based on my experience I simply cannot recommend this product.
