The application was easy. Clean the area with rubbing alcohol, peel the paper off the sticky pads and stick them onto the fridge. I applied some even pressure to ensure that they secured properly. You are suppose to let the adhesive cure for 24 hours. We managed to leave it to cure for about 14 hours and they have stayed secured. I've accidentally yanked on this without unlocking it and it has not broken yet. You'd have to exert a lot of pressure or be constantly yanking on it to make it break. It unlatches fairly easily with just one hand and is easy to lock back together. I have not tried to remove it yet, so I can't speak to what the adhesive may do to the fridge. I wouldn't use these on an uneven or marbled surface as the air pockets under the adhesive would make it less effective. It's not the prettiest thing but it's barely noticeable on our white fridge. I also leave it unlocked during the day when we are around to supervise anyway. If you want to leave it unlatched sometimes, one thing you have to watch out for is that the strap doesn't get stuck in the seal between the door and fridge.
Overall I was skeptical that this would hold up to toddlers and adults accidentally yanking on it, but it has been very effective and easy to use thus far.
EDIT (10/02/2016): We moved out of our old apartment so I wanted to update on how well the adhesive allowed us to remove this. One piece came off really easily once you exerted the force needed to peel it. The second piece (the smaller one that fits on the side) was a little more difficult. We had to carefully pry that one away but once we got it started it came off and left minimal residue. The residue is easy enough to clean off with cleaners or rubbing alcohol. No damage at all to the fridge.
