Have you ever experienced the repeated delays, pressures, and disappointment associated with Saturn's transits and cycles? This classic astrology text, revered by both beginning and professional astrologers alike, offers a fresh perspective on how to handle the influence of this much-maligned astrological symbol. World-famous astrologer and Jungian analyst Liz Greene brings her unique psychological approach to Saturn, showing us how the frustrating experiences connected to this planet can be turned into opportunities for greater insight and meaning in our lives. Saturn, she says, symbolizes a psychic process, one that allows us to utilize the experience of pain for self-discovery and greater understanding. Greene traces the character of this most important planet through sign, house, aspect, synastry, and its role in mythology. She offers a brilliant analysis of Saturn to reveal the face of the Initiator who, for the price of our honesty, offers us greater consciousness, self-understanding, and, eventually, freedom. This 35th anniversary edition includes a new foreword by leading astrologer and author Robert Hand.

After being immersed in learning Hellenistic Astrology, this modern reference is hard to go back to.

I appreciate the reputation this book has had on a generation of astrologers. However, after taking up deep immersion into Hellenistic astrology (via Robert Schmidt, Demetra George, Chris Brennan), I honestly had a hard time continuing with the book. The significations of Signs = Houses are conflated throughout - something that's been taken for granted repeatedly in much of modern western astrology (out of ignorance through no fault of anyone). The approach reflected in this book (and many like it) needs to be put into historical context as the conflation of signs and houses reflects a period before the original Hellenistic source texts were recovered through Project Hindsight's efforts. In essence, it reflects a stream of astrology in the west that was recovered based on incomplete information for understanding the distinction of the Signs and Houses and underlying conceptual frameworks that sit behind them.I'm still on the lookout for books that don't repeat this conflation of Signs = Houses, but so far I'm having tough luck. Stephen Arroyo's books are excellent, but I haven't come across a book solely about Saturn written by him. If anyone reading this can give suggestions, please give me a poke!

Quite good. I would rate it 4.5/5 since it's not my favourite of Liz Greene's books, but this book definitely helps one understand the influence of Saturn, which seems to be quite underrated and not fully understood in common astrology. I learned a lot from reading this, I would recommend it. The 4 part series by Liz Greene and Howard Sasportas on Dynamics of the Unconscious, Inner Planets, Luminaries, etc. are really amazing I would recommend them first before reading this one in general... Unless you really have a big desire for a Saturn house by house, sign by sign specific analysis.

Yeah I met Saturn, alright. It was as though she had a crystal into my very soul. But I cried horrible bitter tears of recognition because of the stark reality w/which Liz portrayed my childhood. (Of course 12th house H2O cusp, w/a Saturn Scorp(R). These very tears became tears of relief because I realized that I was not insane. That it was not my imagination. My childhood was written in small glyphs that a handfull could decipher. Easy enough to see, you just had to have the courage to look @ it. To look into the houses of the family, takes so much courage. 12, 8 & 4. All the things which makes up our belief patterns is the heart of Saturn. All those schedules & routines that we don't question. (Even the different stages of life. Biology--Western Medicine)All the things that we think will always continue to go on, in the same manner, if it is to have any longevity, must evolve and change, it must go on to the next level or face destruction. But it means destroying all those things that we hold sacred in our lives.
The dysfunctional motivations that I watched transfixed as a child, now in horror, were being expressed thru my own life. My inheirtance, etc.. I learned that my inheirtance is not just DNA. It's a psychological stance that's imprinted w/in your subsconscious as soon as you greet the world, fresh from the womb. If you're lucky, & truly honest w/yourself & keep digging, (simply because you're just in so much pain, that not to do so, is more harmful in the long run) you may actaully find yourself. All it takes a willingness to strip away the mask of the parental unit. & many times this stripping can take on a brutal aspect. Simply because our parents represent primal energy. The raw energy, the desire, the need to survive.
This book more than any other really set me on a path of reading a chart from a psychological stance as opposed to a "fated destiny" whereby you would have no other future other than the one designated by our parents.
Lest we forget, the exposure as children, our very nakedness. (there are only 2 other times in which we are so vulnerable & needy in our lives, one is when we fall in love. The final time is when we are old & need others to help us take care of us. The same way we came in, needy & unable to take care of ourselves.) The will to survive comes later. 1st & foremost is the desire to survive which feeds the will. Another reason it hurts is because our society loves to pay homage to "experts" read "gods". & who is above a god? To strip our parents from the very core of your being is to embrace your godhood. You ability to create on this plane. It is our foundation that is rocked. In looking @ your parents thru the lens of this planet, you meet your destiny. Never to be controlled by it or anything else again.

Having recently re-discovered this early Liz Greene work, I still consider it as one of the best books, if not the best, on Saturn over the last 25 years. Any relative newcomer to astrology would do well to check out the deep psychological perspectives offered here, subtleties that are lost by more simplistic interpretations of Saturn in the chart.
Perhaps in contrast to some of her work, the depth and complexity of Liz Greene remains more accessible throughout this book. The layout is straightforward, a consideration of Saturn in each of the four elements (houses and signs) that combines intelligent astrology with fascinating and practical psychological perspectives. Aspects in the chart and synastry are also covered in separate chapters.
One of the main themes is the Jungian idea of embracing the dark and sinister side of Saturn as necessary for healthy, holistic self-development. "It is only when the Beast is loved for his own sake that he can be freed from the spell and become the Prince". Saturn asks that we take responsibility through accepting limitations, learning to use our painful experiences for growth. The approach is balanced, highly insightful with many psychological and esoteric angles covered throughout. As someone with a strong Saturn myself, I highly recommend this book! Read together with "Saturn In Transit" by Erin Sullivan, and you have just about everything you need to know about Saturn in modern astrology.

Quite a depressing read!

The detail of Saturn and its presence in the houses (and aspects to the planets) is interesting, but very little - if any - detail is given on how to actually deal effectively with them. On the other hand, now I know that Saturn - Venus aspects are the most popular among those who have committed suicide. Charming.
I'd rate the book higher if it was actually helpful. The author might be highly qualified, but this isn't everything.

I appreciate a lot the insight this book provides when it comes to Saturn influence in birthcharts.
To my opinion, the author's analysis is accurate and provides psychological dept into person's psyhe and also suggest how one might consider to overcome some challenges.
I like the language as well as the content of the book and I find it very uselful in my own research of natal charts with relation to Saturn placement.
