There was a king who passed.
He left behind two sons,
one beloved and one outcast.
The older of the two was set to take the throne,
but before he could, he had to find a queen to call his own.
The younger one was known to be unruly and unhinged.
The chosen queen was warned to keep far away from him.
Beautiful and cunning, in the light is where she stayed.
But late at night, it was the shadowed lands in which she played.
Mistakes were made and secrets forged;
forgetting duty and her sense.
And while the new king had her hand,
her heart belonged to the scarred prince.
*Scarred is a dark royal romance. It is not a retelling, and it is not fantasy. It has mature situations and themes which may be considered triggers for some. Reader discretion is advised.*

About the author

Emily McIntire is an Amazon Top 20 best selling author of painful, messy, beautiful romance. She doesn’t like to box herself into one subgenre, but at the core of all her stories is soul deep love.
A long time songwriter and an avid reader, Emily has always had a passion for the written word, and when she’s not writing you can find her waiting on her long lost Hogwarts letter, chasing her crazy toddler, or lost between the pages of a good book.

There was a problem filtering reviews right now. Please try again later.
Even though it didn't pass PCNC protocol.
Even though it was a slow-burn.
Even though it's set in the early 1900s.
Things I normally hate in books, I let go for this one.
And all was going well until I read the epilogue.
WHY DOES SHE HAVE TO HAVE "PALE" THIGHS?
WHY COULDN'T SHE BE ETHNICALLY AMBIGUOUS?
I was planning out my review for this book when I was reading it. I was EXCITED to write about how good it was. I was looking forward to sharing my thoughts.
I freaking love Emily McIntire. Hooked was so good, I bought a physical copy! (While on a book buying ban!!!)
But this is just another example of white women romance authors not being able to make their MCs BIPOC. Why? Why does Sara have to be white? Why is that the default?
I'm sick of dark romance being white-only romance.
I was ELATED when, throughout the book, Sara was quite ethnically ambiguous. Raven black hair, no description of "pink" nipples, no mention of "snowy" complexions. Ethnic ambiguity is so rare in dark romance books, never mind actual BIPOC characters.
Emily McIntire, I'm disappointed.
***EDIT: Apparently her skin is described as pale twice in the book. Once in the epilogue and once in an early chapter. I missed the other one, but I think my point still stands.
This book was going to be a favourite for me. A solid four stars. I was IN LOVE with Sara and Tristan. I loved their dynamic.
Dark romance authors, please put me out of my misery and start writing books with BIPOC MCs.
Sara B is the heroine everyone wants, who’s personality is likeable and actually makes sense for her character journey.
Tristan is absolutely feral! Morally grey, a little bit psycho, broken and yet perfect ?
I am so glad this wasn’t some strange love triangle between two brothers. Everything played out EXACTLY how I would have wanted leaving no questions or loose ends. Everything wrapped up nicely and it didn’t drag on too long, but I also found myself never wanting it to end.
Hooked was my favourite read of 2021, and I dare say Scarred may be a favourite of 2022.

Have you ever been so blown away by a novel it leaves at a loss for words for days? That’s been me after reading Scarred and which is why my review has taken so long to write! This was my first book by Emily, and I’m just absolutely BLOWN away. There are truly not enough words that could possibly describe how I feel about this book. It is hands down one of the most amazing forbidden love stories I’ve ever read. Thank you, Emily, for writing this powerful story that is truly unforgettable. (*sigh* que the book slump…)

This story follows Sara & Tristan. This is a dark, forbidden, royal romance, slow burn enemies-lovers, mystery, suspense, strong/brave heroine with her own secrets and a morally grey tattooed villain. It is not a retelling or fantasy.

Sara Beatreaux has been put in an arranged marriage with King Michael Faasa. She couldn’t be more dissatisfied, but she’s agreed to this for one reason and one reason only. Revenge. “𝙄’𝙢 𝙣𝙤 𝙤𝙣𝙚’𝙨 𝙦𝙪𝙚𝙚𝙣. 𝙄’𝙢 𝙟𝙪𝙨𝙩 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙤𝙣𝙚 𝙬𝙝𝙤 𝙬𝙞𝙡𝙡 𝙗𝙪𝙧𝙣 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙘𝙧𝙤𝙬𝙣.” Once Sara arrives at the kingdom, she knows what her plan is and she intends to follow through with it, only, she was not expecting the sudden rush of feelings she would soon encounter while coming face to face with the King's brother. Tristan Faasa. She’s heard of Tristan, everyone has. He’s the one everyone warned her about, The Scarred Prince.
-
Tristan Faasa is a hauntingly beautiful man who’s been left in the shadows with an ever growing feeling of resentment and revenge. It’s become so engrained in his brain that it’s become him and he becomes a living breathing incarnation of hatred. He plans to make everyone pay that’s wronged him and that includes his brothers new soon-to-be wife Sara and watching her being destroyed and submit to him right under his brother’s nose is just icing on top of the cake.

I don’t want to give too much away but y’all 100% need to read this! I beg you! Tristan's mouth is OUT.OF.THIS.WORLD.HOT. Holy s***, Emily knows how to write the SPICE. Tristan and Sara have undeniable sexual chemistry right from the start and when I tell y’all I was clutching the pages and had to take breaks in between it’s the damn truth! Also, Tristan’s tattoos, and his suspenders hanging off his pants dear lawdddd OH and the wax melting scenes….🥲🔥

★★★★★

The themes with the tension and the chaotic dip into the human psyche with a dash of wit and banter that made me smirk and smile and pine for Tristan.
This author took classic themes and combined them into a story that was both gripping and absolutely steamy! There were even a few twists that I probably should have seen coming but was still caught off guard by... In such a good way!
The story was strong, the smut was amazing and the lion King references were brilliantly placed.

Whilst this series is not retellings of popular Disney stories, it is almost like a very adult dark reimagining of them – and I’m living for it. The first book was a reimagining of Hook in a modern mafia scenario, where as this one takes a completely different turn imagining Scar from the lion king in an early 1900 kingdom and a secret battle for a kingdom.
We follow not only Tristan our spare heir, tortured soul, enigmatic alpha bad guy, but also Sara a young girl burdened by family loyalty and responsibility.
It was a guarantee that I was going to love Tristan because he has all the makings of a classic dark romance, Anti-Hero, morally grey hottie. He’s a character of many facets looking for his place in the world following the death of his father and in the shadow of his idiot brother.
The only love interest that was going to work for him was always going to be somebody that could be equal to his intense energy, and we get that and more with Sara. She’s cunning, smart, passionate and empathetic, she sees people of every class which isn’t necessarily a given in this era and is no damsel, knowing exactly how to take care of herself – she’s definitely her own hero.
So as not to spoil I won’t go into the details of the plot but rest assured that it is a thrilling ride from the first page into the last. There is a cast of supporting characters that help to drive the story and are interesting to get to know on the fringes of the main relationship that does stem entirely from Tristan and Sarah. It was an instant five star read for me because this series is shaping up to be incredible, the way Emily does re-imaginings is the best I’ve personally read so far and I love seeing little snippets of the original stories bringing familiarity.

This dark royal romance was something of a huge surprise for me. I'm not usually a royal romance kind of gal but WOW. I fell in love with Emily's writing after Hooked so there was no way I wasn't diving in.
Sara longs for vengeance for her fathers death. She's nothing without him and wants to make sure the responsible pay, by death. The responsible being King Michael. She knows what she has to do. Present herself to the King for him to marry. She has the stock and she certainly has the looks. What she wasn't prepared for though, was Michael's brother, the notorious scarred Prince, Tristan. Known to he ruthless, callous and without a soul.
More shockingly, the Prince definitely isn't ready for the sweet little liar that is Sara B.

Unbeknownst to Sara, Tristan has his own agenda to take his brother down after suffering years of beatings from him. Tristan doesn't trust Sara and soon realises there's more to the little doe than meets the eye. After spending secret time together, they fall....

Tristan and Sara join forces to take Michael down, but not without a fight resulting in death, devastation and ruin.

"That’s the difference between me and other people. They run away from the bad things, and I become them."
🎶 Elley Duhe - Middle of the night
Set in the fictional kingdom of Gloria Terra, Scarred is a 1910's dark royal forbidden romance that gave me everything! With a torturous slow-burn, a thrill of passionate moments stolen in the dark, multiple levels of court scheming, and the love capable of taming the most dangerous from the pride of lions - I needn't nothing more to fall in love with this story. But - surprise surprise - the capacity for compassion, for empathy, and for a sacrifice that came from the most ferocious villain - this had me hooked, swooning, begging for more! Buckle up to meet the Scarred Prince who won't hesitate to rip one's heart right open in the name of his goals, but is capable of riping his own and lying it down at the feet of many others. And, of course, he's devastatingly hot, scarred, and broken, all the things that always, ALWAYS speak to me.
And as for the spice? Tristan is twisted, luscious in his derangement, sweetly venomous. Sara could not resist. I'm still asking myself how am I attracted to this, but I'm as helpless as Sara was and on my knees for Tristan Faasa.
“I will lick, and suck, and cut any part of you I wish, as often as I wish, until you’re begging me to slice you open and do it some more.” My stomach flips at his words, shock mixing in with the sharp rush of desire that splices down my middle. “I want to consume you, Sara, until I feel you thrumming in my veins.”
Read if you like:
- sweetly dangerous villains
- enemies-to-lovers
- forbidden dark royal romance
- references to Disney tales
- strong and confident female lead
- "you are my equal"
- court schemes and intrigues
- boundless love and adoration

The tv series reign, kept popping in my head while I was reading, not that the story line was remotely the same, it just had vibes going on.
I will deffinitly be reading more from this author.

I am eternally grateful that the author wrote this. To me, its phenomenal and shall have to read the others now. Fantastic and cannot recommend it enough.
