A group of adventurers searching for a cure for comatose children find themselves trapped in a sequence of virtual worlds, the only opponents of a conspiracy of the rich to live forever in a dream. Now, they are forced to make an uneasy alliance with their only surviving former enemy against his treacherous sidekick Johnny Wulgaru, a serial killer with a chance to play God forever. Few science fiction sagas have achieved the level of critical acclaim - and best-selling popularity - as Tad Williams's Otherland novels. A brilliant blend of science fiction, fantasy, and technothriller, it is a rich, multilayered epic of future possibilities.

Review of concluding volume of Otherland

A good read and ending for the series. A little too much detail re the gruesome parts though. I personally don't like the idea of peering into the mind of a psychopath.

Absolutely amazing for literature addicts such as myself. Such compelling characters, and so much material that even took ME a long time to read.....and I can speed read Lord of the Rings in 2 days or so. It was perfect in the sense that I got to enjoy the series for such a long time. So many intricate plots and backgrounds..... *sigh* a must-read for the true fantasy/sci-fi junkie.

This is a long read. Don't rush through it. So much detail to take in.

I lost my original Otherland series by Tad Williams. I've bought the series again, from Amazon simply because it's one of those series that you will read over and over. Unlike anything else done by Tad Williams so far. A total and wonderful surprise to this science fiction fan!

Perseverance is needed with this series but it is worth it.

Well it's been a long time since I read the other 3 books and it took me a little while to remind myself of where we were up to. What I would say about this book, and indeed the series, is that they take some perseverance. The story line intrigues me and Tad Williams manages to keep me reading as you want to know what happens next. Yet the conceptual ideas and the worlds we are drawn in to are often difficult to envisage and comprehend. I did enjoy the final twists of this book and the unfolding of how we got there.
I'll leave it to others to offer the full synopsis of the story but would recommend this series. It reminded me a little of Clive Barkers Weaveworld or Guy Gavriel Kay's the Summer Tree both of which I probably read decades ago.

Finally done - bit of a slog at the end

I first read this series back in highschool and since I've been getting back into reading for fun I thought I'd give it a try. First few books went easier but by the end of the third, I couldn't believe there was a 4th. The overarching story is good, but it just felt LONG. I wonder if a trim to a trilogy might have helped, at least for me.

I loved the ending
Reviewed in the United Kingdom 🇬🇧 on October 30, 2005Verified Purchase
I liked the ending of this quartet - no hints given here. The books are incredibly long and you have to be patient and awake reader in order to keep things together while following the different plots. In this book they all come together and Williams masters his craft well.
Renie and !Xabbu and the rest of the gang recruited by Mr. Sellars are in the strangest place they've been in yet in the Otherworld - a place that seems unfinished. They are stranded there because of the loving Dread who betrayed their company. The stories of the other members of the group are told and they find out that all of them seem to know children who have fallen into a coma.
Then some of them are able to escape and meet up with Paul Jonas (eventually). Figuring out exactly who Paul Jonas is is part of the plot in these books. In this book we finally find out what's going on. In the last book we were left at the mountain of black glass - stranded and trying to figure out where to go from there.
In North Carolina Christabel, Cho-Cho and Sellars have to face the music. All this time Jongleur's network of the Grail Brotherhood is being killed off one by one. We follow Dread in his fight to gain ownership of the Brotherhood.

Concluding Book
Reviewed in the United Kingdom 🇬🇧 on July 9, 2018Verified Purchase
First of all, I've enjoyed this series. At times it has been a bit long winded, but overall it has been satisfying.
This concluding book was far too long and really drifted in places. It does finish the series well though and I do recommend it.
