My Playstation 4 was broken down because of a corrupted internal hard drive and I needed a replacement that wasn't going to break the bank. This hard drive is reasonably priced and fits a PS4 perfectly. Installation was quick and painless and I haven't had any of the nightmare-ish issues that the old hard drive caused. Would definitely recommend to anyone that needs to replace their console's internal HDD.

I know it's a 5400rpm mechanical drive, but it's INCREDIBLY slow, even compared to other 5400rpm drives, the seek times and transfer rates are absolutely atrocious. Used this in a PS3 and promply replaced it with another brand, performance was sub-par compared to stock 5400rpm drive. Loading took forever, and many games with streaming audio or FMVs that were installed on the drive (such as PSN downloads) would have skipping issues. This was completely resolved by using another drive.

Their compute line of drives might be okay for file storage, but even the most basic of transfers didn't meet my expectations.

Update, possible wide spread defects

Update: initially this drive seemed to work fine but once it started to fill up passed a few hundred GB of data, it would start getting 100% disk usage problems that only resolve with a reboot.

At first I thought it was my motherboard, but then I put the drive into a different computer with all different hardware, reformatted, same problem. Then I suspected the Windows installer so made a fresh USB stick, same problem. I also tried using it as primary, then secondary drive to an SSD, it would always lock up after a few days.

During this time I made the mistake of putting a 3.5" 6TB version of this drive in my friends computer, he is now also having his system lock up.

I went back to using a small SSD I had for my computer and the issue is gone, unfortunately he isn't willing to go through the hassle of replacing the drive yet.

This is a difficult issue to diagnose as it can run fine for several days and then just start locking up if you are downloading a game or transferring files, too much HDD accessing at one seems to be the trigger.

It's possible that the issue is being caused by Windows 10 with HDD's in general, I have no other hard drives to test at the moment. I tried several software fixes I found online for other people having this issue but no luck.

In conclusion, whether it's Windows or Seagate that has the problem, I'd consider a different drive, even if just a different model number.

One other note from my original review:
This is designed for a laptop or with a pressure / push on SATA cable for desktop, it does NOT have the clip holes that newer latch SATA cables click into. There should be more attention brought to this in the listing (of all drives not just this one).

This drive is absolute garbage. The transfer speed for files is all over the place. Sometimes it'll pump out 110+ MB/s, occasionally it'll rest at 50 MB/s but the majority of the time it's stuck between 350 - 755 KB/s! That's right, LESS THAN 1 MB/s.

This drive is unreliably bad. This is the first seagate I've purchased since the 90's. Now I remember why I stopped using this brand. Get a Western Digital. These drives are garbage.

My external hard drive died for my xbox one so I got this to replace it. This is a much better hard drive, and costs pretty much the same once you buy the case for it. I hooked it up and I didn’t have to do anything complicated. I believe it just gave me the option to format it immediately when I plugged it into the console, or you might have to go to the ‘storage’ area in the settings and click it, but it’s not hard at all.

Bought this as a necessary replacement for my PS4, since the original drive began manifesting corruption issues on game save data. The PS4 makes it easy to swap drives, but this replacement drive is very considerably louder than the original - make a strange sound like an angry dentist with a low-speed drill.

Otherwise, seems to work just fine, and I'm no longer losing 10 hours of game progress because my save file corrupted, so that's a win!

I purchased the ST2000LM015 drive (2TB, 2.5 inch). I did not know that HD manufacturers are moving to shingled magnetic recording technology (SMR). In summary, writes to the drive get very fragmented with time (not the type of fragmentation that you can solve with a defragmenter) and then both reads and writes are extremely slow! This is crap! It excels in benchmarks, but when you download real files to it and you try to read them later, the reading speed is around 50 MB/s. Copying large files is usually OK, the problem happens when files are downloaded and slowly copied to the drive, then the drive internally distributes the fragments to fill the sector gaps according to the shingled technology. And this is the future for HDD storage!

Meine Platte hat nach einer Woche problemlosen Betriebs alle Daten verloren!
Genau gesagt war die Partitionierungstabelle verschwunden und Windows 10 behandelte die Platte wie eine noch nicht initialisierte neue Platte. Nach der neuen Initialisierung und Formatierung hat sich die Platte wieder komplett unauffällig verhalten. Aber ich werde ihr nicht mehr vertrauen können! Die Platte war laut Smart-Informationen eine wirkliche neue Platte.

Die gleiche Platte habe ich vor 2 Jahren schon mal gekauft. Die ist heute noch top.

Aber jetzt wurde eine Platte mit Produktionsdatum 21.01.2019 geliefert, die Seagate-Garantie ist gerade noch 1,5 Jahre. Die Bestellung erfolgte am 29.10.2019, die Lieferung am 31.10.2019.

Die Lesefehlerrate ist enorm hoch, SMART zeigt nur noch 76% an. Auch bei Airflow Temperature werden gerade noch 53% angezeigt. So eine Gammelplatte hatte ich bisher noch nie! [Nach Aufforderung von Amazon habe ich diesen Teil der Rezension gelöscht. Ich soll den Händer auf der Händlerseite bewerten. Das geht aber nur bei Marketplace-Händlern.]

Normal ist das nicht, die Platte ging daher zurück (so einer Platte vertraut man keine Daten an, nicht mal unwichtige!). [Hier habe ich den Satz gelöscht, mit dem ich klarstellte, dass ich sowas nicht gewohnt bin.]

Dafür habe ich je ein Bild der Platte und der SMART-Werte angefügt.

My order arrived very quickly That is all the good news.

It was packed in a -p0lain box with an overlay sticker saying "seagate approved packing". In the box was the hard drive. NOTHING else.
Missing was the drive instructions, warranty certificate and CE confoemity document.
I believe the drive had been rejected by another customer and repacked to sello to me.

However, i installed it in my laptop and switched the unit on. I couldn't install it because the drive was not recognised dy either Window;s "drive manager" or "Paragon hard disc Manager". I dismantled the computor and reistalled the drive. Still not recognised.
I then removed the drive and installed WD drive that i had. Bingo! all working.

The above is why i think that the drive had been previously returned and repackaged without proper testing.
Thus my negative review.

I am a long standing Prime customer and always had very good service from Amazon.
Lets hope this doesn't again.

The packaging was just an antistatic bag! Okay - it was part of a multipart order in a jiffy bag but I had hoped for at least a cardboard sleeve. (Amazon??! :o)
Anyway - no SMART errors and a pleasing spinup count of 0.
It's a little slower than its 3.5" 7500rpm cousins but I'm just teaming this up with a 500GB 'system' SSD so I'm not too bothered. In the USB caddy it's hard to see what transfer rate I can really get. It will be internal soon so I will try and get back to the review and update it.
Update - internal on a SATA connection it managed about 60MB/sec continuous write for a very large file on a partition that's towards the inner part of the platter (Win10, NTFS, default settings). It peaked at 110MB but that's just on-disk cache filling up.
Not brilliant but perfectly adequate. If you want higher transfer rates, pay more - this was a budget purchase and it ticks that box. There are some good bytes/pound deals amongst the 2-4TB 2.5" spinning disks this summer (2020) if you're after a backup drive.
