Seventy-Eight Degrees of Wisdom is an essential part of every Tarot library. Some even refer to it as the “Tarot Reader’s Bible.” Using images from the popular Rider Waite deck, Pollack shares the in-depth meaning of each card, examining it from several differing aspects in terms of the symbolism, mythological, astrological, numerological, historical and psychological. This book provides knowledge and understanding of the Tarot for both people who know a great deal about the spiritual and psychological ideas of the Tarot and the beginner who might know nothing at all. It also focuses on readings, not simply as predictions, but rather as a way of discovering ourselves, and beyond that, the spirituals wonder of life.

This Tarot journey to self awareness is organized into three parts for easy reference.


Part One: The Major Arcana The purpose of the Major Arcana is twofold. First of all, by isolating the elements of our lives into archetypes it enables us to see them in their pure forms, as aspects of psychological truth. Secondly, it helps us to truly resolve these different elements, to us to unity. In reality, perhaps the innocence symbolized by the Fool never existed. Somehow we experience as something lost. The Major Arcana tells us how to get it back.	Part Two: The Minor Arcana The Tarot demonstrates many things, some very unexpected. These things emerge through interpretation of the Tarot’s images, through joining those images in meditation, and through seeing the combinations formed in readings. Taken separately, the cards of the Minor Arcana present us with a grand panorama of human experiences. Together, and in union with the archetypal Major cards, they draw us into ever wider knowledge of the changing wonder of life.	Part Three: Readings Readings teach us a general lesson as well as a very important one. In a manner no explanation can possibly equal, they demonstrate that no card, no approach to life, is good or bad except in the context of the moment. Giving readings gives each person a chance to renew his or her instinctive feeling for the pictures themselves. Rachel Pollack (1945-2023) was the leading light and foremost influence on modern Tarot. Her bestselling book, Seventy-Eight Degrees of Wisdom, first published in 1980 and never out of print, is widely described as the “Bible of Tarot.” She was also a great influence upon the science fiction, fantasy, and comics communities, as well as being a trailblazer within the transgender community. A master of many genres, Pollack is renowned for her run of issues #64-87 of Doom Patrol (Vertigo Comics), where she created the first transgender superhero. A prolific author of both fiction and non-fiction, her other books include A Walk Through the Forest of Souls, Unquenchable Fire, Godmother Night, and The Fissure King. She was the creator of The Shining Tribe Tarot and wrote the books for numerous other decks, including The Vertigo Tarot and Salvador Dali's Tarot. Pollack taught at the famed Omega Institute for over thirty years.

I’ve been practicing tarot for almost 20 years and I’ve read a great number of books and guides. Part of tarot is always looking to enrich the experience and knowledge and see new perspectives. This book is the most well done, well researched, concise, that I’ve ever had the pleasure to read. It offers a wide range of explanations from varying historical belief systems and explanations surrounding the culture at the time of the illustration of this deck. I expected to breeze through this because it’s not a long read but I’ve found myself instead sitting with highlighter and making notes so it’s taking quite a lot longer than I expected. I highly recommend this to both beginners and experienced readers and I’ve already bought copies for friends.

I’m not sure where all these positive reviews come from. I’ve had the book a few months and have had the opportunity to compare and go in depth into traditional interpretations of the Tarot. The author may have been in a trance when she wrote it but it certainly didn’t serve the work. Her use of language is gobbledygooka and unsound. She name-drops relentlessly going from philosophers to scholars to academics and occultists but her “teachings” fall flat and lack any substance. It’s almost as if she is laughing at us a little (or a lot) with her pseudo-intellectual rants. And regarding the Tarot, she goes on endless tangents about minuscule details but fails to address what seems like important details in the illustrations in the Rider-Waite deck. Case in point: The World card. She over-stresses the wreathe as an egg shaped hole where everything and nothing exists in tandem, but makes no mention at all of the the bull’s head, lion’s head, eagle’s head and man’s head in the four corners. All in all, this book left me wanting and a little bit embarrassed for her. I’d keep shopping for better texts if I were you.

As above, perfect. written in 1978, so some years ago, but still perfect. I cannot believe it took me so long to get a copy. the hardback edition is very nice, the print is very clear, the card pictures are black and white but again very clear. The author Rachel Pollack is interesting and inspiring, with a wealth of knowledge and her own view about the progression of the cards, and their meanings.
a small minus which didn't overall effect my view.
If you use tarot as a kabalah pathworking tool, you will more than probably think Rachel Pollacks tree of life spread is rather silly as i did, and never consider bothering with it. She obviously is not a kabbalist or a magician, but is limited to being in divination. (however is an expert one for sure.)
so if you are a kabbalist looking for a tarot book for magickal purposes, look elsewhere.
but for all others looking for a tarot book for purposes of divination, and maybe self development, start here, its really the best book i have seen, and i have seen many.
