The smell is very nice. I had never experienced sandalwood before and I approve.
It lathers up very well. I shave my head and face so the lather really matters to me. Thick and stays foamy.
LESS than two weeks later and this tin is done....... empty..... wut?! $40-50 per month for this product at my usage? For soap? No way Jose. Dropped another star.
If price is no issue and you don't mind buying 2 per month to shave your head and face.. this may be for you. Not for me though.
So onto the review:
Lather: 5/5 - Lathers super well, I recommend you just apply onto a prepared face and then use your shaving brush (thats moderately wet) to lather on face. This stuff, unlike soap, doesn't like to be lathered in bowls I find
Shave Protection and Glide: 4/5 Works like a charm and doesn't cause issues. Works pretty well with water and I can certainly feel the ingredients getting into your skin and helping with the shave. But at this price point, I don't think it's better than proraso or any $10-12 product.
Scent: 2/5 Again, for a $20 product, it doesn't really have that sandalwood smell and certainly doesn't outperform Taylor ($20) or Proraso ($10).
Value: 4/5 - I don't want to be too picky on the scent because it is subjective. But at $20, it's certainly not an entry level shave cream/soap. If you're going to charge a small premium, I do expect some small premiums in your product.
You might like it due to the (lack of) scent. But just remember, there are a multitude of other brands out there with as good or better product at the same price point or less.
The tin it comes in is a nice departure from the plastic tubs you typically get with most small batch soaps.
I'll stick an almond sized dollop of this into my wet synthetic brush and lather directly on my face (I'm not a bowl/mug latherer), dipping the tips of the brush into my sink to add a bit of water until I develop a nice shiny lather, a little thicker than whipped cream.
The menthol is a very nice amount. It won't slap you in the face like a lot of highly mentholated soaps out there, but it is nice and refreshing, especially on a hot muggy day.
Scent is entirely subjective, but I enjoyed this scent. It would be more accurate to call it a Vanilla Sandalwood. It is a powdery, sweet scent, which isn't what someone looking for a more woody sandalwood may want. If you enjoy vanilla scents, this one may be worth a look. Scent strength is medium-strong, and I can still pick it up 2-3 hours after the shave. When paired with the matching RMBC Sandalwood Post Shave Balm, the scent is strong, and I can still pick up whiffs of it up to 5 hours later.
Performance-wise, this lathers up nicer than Taylor of Old Bond Street, and is a little slicker too. Post shave feel isn't quite as nourishing though. It's still much better than canned foam and many of the cheap mass produced soaps (like Proraso for example). The matching Sandalwood balm that RMBC offers does a lot to rectify this, although it can leave your skin feeling a little greasy, and it feels a little heavy outdoors in the summer.
Overall, I'd buy it again. At full price I think there are several artisan soaps that offer better performance for the same cost, but when on sale for $16-17 it's a pretty good buy.
It is on a metal tin as opposed to the plastic bowl used by Taylor of old bond street.
The scent is light and doesn't linger in an over-the-top offensive way, the shave is great, no neck rash and given the small amount that hubby has used in a week, it looks to be an economical choice as well.
Well done Rocky Mountain Barber Company!! Love the opportunity to support a Canadian company when we find a product that's so perfect for our use!
I found it difficult to get a thick lather but this definitely has a good slickness to it. The smell is great and gives a little bit of a tingling sensation but imo this is over priced.
I can get the porasso eucalyptus for $8 and does just as good of a job, nice scent and it tingles. So unless your willing to pay 2.5 times for a the scent, you won't be overly impressed with this stuff.
I'd buy again if the price was lowered to even $15.

Delivered in a no-nonsense, robust and manly, aluminium twist top 5oz tin, this shaving cream appealed even before I opened it. Removing the lid reveals the tub is packed to the brim with thick white cream. The exquisite scent of sandalwood just spills from the tin and I find myself constantly waving the thing under my nose to get just one more lung-full. The sandalwood scent doesn't actually hang around too long once the shaving process is done, which is a bit of a shame because it's just so damn nice.
I lather up directly on my face with a brush, no bowl whisking, so the lather you achieve may vary from my experience. I'd describe this as a medium lather, which in my opinion is the best kind. Too thin and it doesn't do its job. Too thick and you can't see what you're doing. The shaving action is superb! I shave with straight razors so a smooth lubricated stroke is essential, especially when you have very sensitive skin like mine.
I tend to take my time over my shave and one thing I have found with this cream is there's a rather strong face freeze effect if its time on the skin is prolonged. Probably from the menthol part of the ingredients, but this vanishes as soon as you rinse. Talking of ingredients, Rocky Mountain Barber Company very proudly boast their products to be all natural. Another plus for my delicate little cheeks.
One thing that has utterly amazed me about this stuff is just how soft it leaves my skin through the entire day! The simple act of shaving can do all kinds of damage to your face, and my skin often felt quite dry to the touch using my previous product. I've never gone so far as to use a facial moisturiser, even though I probably should, but now, using this product, I genuinely don't think I'll ever need to.
I have sensitive skin and the cooling, soothing quality of shave is remarkable.
Look to yourselves so called established foam and gel proprietary brands!!
PS, Update...the company have felt it necessary to increase the price from an already expensive £11.99 to a hefty £12.99.
I feel that this is an unnecessary hike, and a disappointing development!
Unfortunately, I could not smell the Sandalwood scent and in my experience it did not lather at all, although I did not use a brush, my expectations of the product were not realised, hence the 2 stars
