Jonathan Edwards is one of the most extraordinary figures in American history. Arguably the most brilliant theologian ever born on American soil, Edwards (1703 - 1758) was also a pastor, a renowned preacher, a missionary to the Native Americans, a biographer, a college president, a philosopher, a loving husband, and the father of 11 children.
George M. Marsden - widely acclaimed for his magisterial large study of Edwards - has now written a new, shorter biography of this many-sided, remarkable man. A Short Life of Jonathan Edwards is not an abridgment of Marsden's earlier award-winning study but is instead a completely new narrative based on his extensive research. The result is a concise, fresh retelling of the Edwards story, rich in scholarship yet compelling and readable for a much wider audience, including students.

An excellent, quick view of the life and legacy of former Princeton president and New England preacher, Johnathan Edwards. If you want to dig deeper, there's always the other book that Marsden wrote on Edwards, but this will probably do for most people.

My favorite Jonathan Edwards biography!

I am not a theologian by any means but I am fascinated by the life of Jonathan Edwards and his family. This biography was exactly what I have been looking for, detailed enough to be well documented but written in such a way that it is easy and enjoyable to read.
I particularly like the way the author compares the lives of Jonathan Edwards and Benjamin Franklin. It is an interesting account of men born in similar circumstances and education but who go on to live very different lives... one becoming one of the best known Christians of his day and the other choosing the modern teaching coming from Europe.
I downloaded it on my Kindle but purchased the paperback edition as a gift for a family member (who is a true theologian). I'd recommend reading Marriage to a Difficult Man to get a further account of the importance of his wife and children to his life.

I learned so much from this book. Even though it's the "short life" version of Marsden's larger work, it is perfect for someone who wants to get a glimpse into the life of Edwards and the world he lived in. Especially recommended for busy people who don't have much spare time to read another 300 pg. book (I'm currently a full time minister, husband, dad, and seminary student).
In addition, unlike many historians, Marsden writes in a very engaging and enjoyable style. I was surprised at how much I just enjoyed reading this book. Highly Recommend.

A good introduction to the life and writings of Jonathan Edwards who is perhaps one of the best theologians America has ever had.

A Great Introduction to Edwards
Reviewed in the United States on February 17, 2010Verified Purchase
A great intro to Jonathan Edwards, his life, work, ministry and writings. Marsden has a fuller biography of Edwards (Johnathan Edwards - A Life; 640 pages) but tghlyhis at 152 pages, will wet your appetite to pursue further reading of this remarkable man and theolgian.
Marsden's writing style is easy and flowing and so wonderful for just getting immersed into the story. Highly recommended.
