2 pages into the book and you know how it's gonna end
Reviewed in India 🇮🇳 on November 26, 2018Verified Purchase
The thing with most Indian writers these days is they seem to write so that their stories are made into movies. And why do female writers have to make their female protagonists lack so much self worth. Madhumita Bhattacharya's Reema Ray is a case in point. Anyway that's a different story altogether. Couple of pages into the book and you know how it will all pan out. The writing tries to be forcefully funny. But it gets irritating after a while. I mean how much of self depreciating lines will keep being funny. The lead girl keeps aging but her self worth ages backwards. The lead guy is meant to be suave and the silent, handsome type but lacks much of a personality. At the end of the book he says to the girl that it's been her from the moment he knows her. Cute??? Except that he was 18 then and she 8. Creepy right? The girl who isn't into academics suddenly decides to become a doc. Nothing surprising there but why Royal College of Medicine, London? Did all Indian medical colleges shut shop? No. Just so that London can be the back drop where the hero can meet with her alone, nurse her when she's sick, so that she can have an assortment of friends - sexy and advice spewing roomie with a love for alcohol - check, dishy gay guy - check, crazy guy with libido and amorous lines - check. You know the girl loves this guy but she has to be kept in her negative self worth character so she won't realize that she's in love with him. Her gauchiness and nerdiness are meant to be cute and adorable, but some point you feel like slapping her silly and hope she will reboot when she wakes up. Now you know where you've seen all this (literally) drama play out. Right... Bollywood. Need I say more?

A Very Well Crafted Book!

The story is very well narrated, and the plot has been crafted in detail, with the idiosyncrasies of the characters plotted well into the story. Beginning from Nira at the age of 8 to the Nira at 27 years, the story spans almost 2 decades. This journey from a tomboy in Calcutta to a doctor in London is not just a coming-of-age story, but also the story of how love can actually transcend age and time, as it strengthens over small little things one experiences. I loved the manner in which minute details in the initial story played a crucial part in the latter half. Sonia has taken the quirks and whims of a child, a teenager, and a Young Adult as they deal with life and comes to terms with their emotions and feelings. With some very interesting plot points, my favorite one was Nira’s family going to drop her to college, and the events that unfold. Coming to the climax, I almost fell for the pseudo climax that the story leads you into until you turn the page. It is one of the most amazing endings to a story I have come across, and the feeling when the other shoe drops is indescribable.

Worth. The. Read. (need I say more?)

Sonia Bahl's vivid descriptions take you from Calcutta where the story begins, all the way to London where Nira makes life changing discoveries. From living as a boy and having only boys as friends to having a girl best friend, a gay friend, a life long crush, dating, living. It's an all in one book.
Basically, looking brave and being brave are two different things. It may have turned out differently if Nira had just taken a chance but then if she had, she wouldn't have gathered all the experience she did. And we wouldn't have had the chance to go through this amazing journey. It would've been buttermilk without the spice. Who would like that?

Such a lovely coming-of-age book that takes you through a very specific emotional roller-coaster of smiles, chuckles, tears. It's a heartwarming tale of a girl who doesn't quite fit into the usual mould, but discovers moulds aren't necessary at all after all - the sort of journey that so many of us can relate to.
The narrative does make you want to sit down and read it all in one go, and breathlessly follow the spectacular miss on her travels, physical and emotional, without missing a beat. There is a real sense of place, and the book is dotted with very believable characters. A charming read.
Can't wait for this to hit the big screen and see the characters in our head come to celluloid life!
