You don't have to purchase a cover for your Kindle but I would recommend if you are going to take your Kindle out and about with you. It protects the Kindle by keeping dust, dirt, fingerprints etc. off your kindle. The added bonus when you close the cover it puts your Kindle to sleep, open the cover and your Kindle wakes up. The fabric has a nice feel and has texture to it so it won't slip out of your hands. There is a magnet (that you don't see) in the cover so when the cover is closed it provides a nice tight fit, protecting your Kindle. Inside the cover is soft and smooth protecting the screen. It was super easy to install, it just snaps in and provides a nice snug fit. I watched a lot of You Tube videos about various covers you can purchase and the cover made for the Amazon Kindle by Amazon was the winner every time. I am very happy with my purchase. iI provides peace of mind knowing my Kindle is protected so I will have it for several years to come.

On my previous Kindle, the cheap cases I bought kept breaking. The major flaw of this case is that it seems to be wearing out untypically fast - the edges of the case (especially the top) feel uneven to my fingers already, as if they've deformed from my body heat, especially since they get a little bit sticky? The rest of the case feels fantastic though.
