Minor Blemishes Hurt The Image
Reviewed in Canada on July 30, 2021
I'm not going to review the season itself since people will have already made up their minds at this point about whether Star Trek: Discovery is worth their time to watch or not. I will say, however, that this is a solid high definition collection of the entire season. Generally speaking, this looks great on TVs and is a noticeable step up from watching it on a digital stream.
Unfortunately, there's one minor but significant issue that hurts this series for fans that also care about image quality. There is a lot of visible banding in darker scenes. This means that some shots that occur in space, or just dark, cave-like, poorly lit spaces, such as the episodes toward the end of the season can jump out at more image-conscious viewers. This probably wouldn't have been an issue if this were a 4K image, or if they'd just opened up the storage space a bit more on each disc and had fewer episodes per disc to allow for more bandwidth.
The banding issue aside, the details and colors of the series are well preserved here and modern television series continues to impress me with how great the production values are. Costumes, cinematography, and special effects are all comparable to film these days, and we're lucky to be able to enjoy that kind of production quality from series television.
