5.0 out of 5 starsGood BD, digital download included, great Amazon service.
Reviewed in Canada on September 22, 2016
Half the fun of this Blu-Ray package is the movie itself, and you don't have to be a Trekker to enjoy that.

The other, equally entertaining feature is the behind-the-scenes clips that show how some things were done during the making of the film.

I was a bit disappointed by the lack of a version with commentary from the Director but that's okay.

They include a URL from which you can legally download a digital copy of the film. That's handy for viewing it from a device like a tablet or other computer that doesn't have an optical drive.

I've taken Amazon.ca up on a few of their offers to provide BD/DVD movies as soon as they are released to disk. I'll use that service again because they do get the products to me within days of the release ...and they don't price gouge, which they so could.

1.0 out of 5 starsThe Digital Code for the Movie is expired!!!!
Reviewed in Canada on July 4, 2019
I loved the movie and recently made this purchase because it also had a digital redemption code with it. Unfortunately the code I received with my current purchase is being shown as invalid when I tried to redeem it. Sure enough inside the box it says " Code may not be valid after 9/10/2015". It would be better if sellers of blu ray movies with digital redemption codes clearly mention that where the codes can be redeemed and by when that way customers won't feel duped. I hope Amazon fixes this. Showing a movie that is supposed to have a digital copy included but is actually expired does not inspire confidence on the part of the customer.

4.0 out of 5 stars not bad

It was good. The next one is AWFUL! Stopped watching it after 20 minutes. All the killing going on (young people love it!), but I am a early star trek lover, and after 20 minutes, I turned it off. Sick of killing! Too much martial arts in it. Gene would probably be rolling in his grave, if he was buried 6 feet under. I am loosing faith in Star Trek movies, they will have to pull up their book straps, if I will ever watch them again!

5.0 out of 5 stars Completely enjoyable

More believable than the first one with the new actors. The close ups showed more intensity in the acting and Kirk showed a little more of the Shatner intensity and belief in the Star Fleet principles. I thought I saw this at the bar scene with Admiral Pike when Kirk was given a second chance as a First Officer. Lying in his Captain's log seemed beyond belief but was explained since this time line needed Kirk to have different life experiences to gain the proper perspective.
The Zachary Quinto scene where he was tearing up was a little hard to stomach the first time I saw it in the theaters but seemed a more tolerable now that I have had a year to get used to it. Quinto and Pine just didn't seem that close and seemed at odds most of the time so tearing up was still too much especially when Nimoy only became emotional when under some alien influence. Quinto did lose Vulcan and his mother so maybe that is why.
Khan character has received criticism for not being as genuine as Ricardo Montalbon. I did see a little of him being portrayed in the more dramatic scenes by Benedict Cumberbatch.
Nice to see Nimoy again in this one. Curious that not even an honorable mention of Nimoy's name on the DVD jacket though. I did see his name clearly separated in the movie credits. Felt his description of how Khan was stopped in his time line was cut off and should have at least been available on the deleted scenes. Almost funny when he said Khan was stopped at great cost since Spock was the great cost. Obvious Segway to the Spock death scene in the movie Wrath of Khan. I thought it almost funny when Nimoy said "...at great cost..." because it seemed like the only way to defeat Khan was for one main character to die.
McCoy tests Khans blood in this one but not at all in the other time line....hummmm? I won't try and spoil the movie here but seemed almost improbable that this was never explored in the other time line.
Interesting link to how Kirk met Carol Markus, the mother of Kirk's son David in Wrath of Khan. Admiral Markus was such a control freak yet never mentioned in the Star Trek universe before so a little out in left field but interesting.
Scotty seemed more like his old self in this one. I'm still confused by his little buddy "get down from there". Comic relief I suppose.

I enjoyed this on Blu-ray more than in the theaters. The 3D version is only available till 09/10/2015 .

2.0 out of 5 stars J.J. Abrams breaks his word...sequel fails to impress.

Apart from his annoying lens flares, Mr. Abrams said he would not revisit The Wrath of Khan but that's exactly what he did. These actors, fine as they are, and this franchise, don't have the history, the age, the emotional weight necessary to carry it off. It was a big mistake. Yes it's gorgeously shot but can't make up for bad copies of the now legendary and still emotionally wrenching Star Trek scenes in Wrath of Khan. I loved the first film in this reinvigorated franchise but this one is a sad mis step for all concerned. I wish it had not been attempted!

3.0 out of 5 stars Excellent visual production, unless you happen to dislike random flashes

I'm not dyslexic, I have never had a seizure from light patterns, but the closest I ever came was while watching this film. It's a great visual production with a weak story between instances of random flashes which serve no apparent purpose other than to distract from stealing storylines from previous films in the Star Trek history. Spock' appearance was a highlight, I'll give it that. Also i feel that the casting is really well done, just want this crew to have the stories they deserve to play out.

These reboot films are contentious in some circles. Some people do not like changes to their beloved story, or certain characters.

If you are able to look at this as a proper alternate universe Trek film, you will have no problems. The quality of the video is epic. This movie really shows off a good bluray system with high quality screen and audio abilities. The score is amazing. I have the sound track, and enjoy it all the time.

Love the original series. Enjoyed most of the others. I think these actors do a great job and hope to see a few more movies with them, especially now that they have embarked on the 5 year journey. I'd like to see Mccoy and Scotty a bit more. Keep in mind that this is a different time line since Vulcan was destroyed in the first movie, so it may not follow the original series. Just enjoy it and don't dissect it to the nth degree. It's a fun ride.

3.0 out of 5 stars Movie **** Blueray Disc Release ***
Reviewed in Canada on October 5, 2013

The movie itself is a four star mixture of top-notch Trek and mind numbing explosive effects. If you like the modern superhero movies by Marvel and DC you should enjoy this for the heroism and drama. If you're an avid Trekkie, or one who slipped over to the supposedly more respectable term Trekkers, you're likely to hate it or love it, or both at the same time. In my mind, a disc at home is they way to see this movie, as you can pause and have time to take it all in. There is a lot to take in!
The missing star for the actual movie is because true trek does not revolve around terrorism and evil vs. good, it's about adventure, discovery, and hope, with of course unexpected hazards along the way for all the action and suspense anyone could want. The heart and soul of Trek has always been the characters, and they are well written and very well acted, and true to their characters. It felt like real Trek in the character moments, and that, in the end was what mattered most to me. The techie trekkies and some other hard core fans rate it poorly for the inconsistencies between the tech in the reboot universe and the original one, and other Trek issues.
*Update: This Blueray release rates only three stars because of how the special features are made available, with poor advertising. They listed some documentaries, "and lots more," but I sure didn't see any "lots more" on the disc. The most important ones to me were omitted. There are no bloopers, no deleted scenes, and no directors/writers commentary! I'm not as upset as when I first wrote this, and have revised my star rating from two to three for this particular Blueray release. After reading reviews on here I found out that if you load the iTunes digital copy instead of just the Ultraviolet one, you also get "iTunes extras" available for load at the same time. I haven't finished loading yet because it's a huge more than 6G download and we don't have unlimited internet here. So I'll have to wait for next month if I don't want to pay extra on my internet bill to download it. Not convenient! I would much prefer they put it on the disc in the first place. If they don't put it on the disc, they should at least make it clear that more extras are available with the iTunes, but not the Ultravilet download. What a mess of confusion and lack of communication. Perhaps they decided after the discs were released to add on extras with the digital download from the discs? It looks like I will be downloading the directors commentary, one of the main things I was missing. I had heard previously that commentary must be bought separately on iTunes, and other features were put exclusively on other physical releases at retail outlets. So to get all the extra material one must trade and share or buy multiple releases (update-unless the iTunes extras download included everything that wasn't already on the disc, I'll try to find out and post a future update). What were they thinking!! I want to be able to buy one neat, nice disc sets with everything on it!! It's cruel and unusual punishment for the fans to have extra material made that is withheld on each disc set for marketing purposes. There are numerous articles on this topic, easily found on the internet, along with streams of angry comments from frustrated fans. It's a challenge just to find out exactly what extra material is where, to try to collect it all. The people who planned this are either sadistic or idiotic. I'm angry on behalf of people who want the DVD instead of the Blueray but still want extra material, as the extras are only on the Bluerays.
One other point is that on my system, with using the speakers that came on the Sony HDTV, the voices are hard to hear any time there's background music or explosions (which is most of the time). I use the subtitles a lot. Other reviewers have said the sound is great.
I still would recommend the purchase of this disc from here as I find Amazon reliable and convenient, and there is no disc anywhere that has everything on it. The alternative is to boycott all the releases, but if you're not doing that, this is a highly enjoyable movie with a true trek feel at times, lots of action and beautiful or dramatic artwork.
The digital copy has to be downloaded, but once you set up the accounts you need, Ultra Violet plus Flixter, or iTunes, it works. The instructions and process could be made more clear and convenient for how to load the digital copy. The Ultra Violet is a good idea, allowing each member of a family separate access, on-line streaming and storage. You can't loose the copy like you can with other brands if your computer crashes.

I love any Star Trek mvie. The new cast of actors were excellently well chosen for their roles. My only complaint was with the making of the DVD from a movie.... the sound quality was either too loud or too poor! I'd set the sound louder for dialogue and then have to whip it down for action moments. You'd think that the producers could control this better. It is very annoying!
All in all though I'd buy the next Trek movie.
