Over the last 100 years, the road to success for most everyone has been divided into predictable stages. But three things have changed the path to success:
Boomers are realizing that a lot of the things they were promised aren’t going to materialize, and they have started second and third careers.
Technology has given access to an unprecedented number of people who are building online empires and changing their lives in ways that would have been impossible years ago.
The days of “success first, significance later,” have ended.
While none of the stages can be skipped, they can be shortened and accelerated. There are only two paths in life: average and awesome. The average path is easy because all you have to do is nothing. The awesome path is more challenging, because things like fear only bother you when you do work that matters. The good news is Start gives readers practical, actionable insights to be more awesome, more often.

After listening to the first three chapters, I loved it so much I bought the hard cover. Jon Acuff's book "START" was refreshing. Yes, it's about starting to live life with passion and do work that brings you joy. That said, Jon doesn't just promote magical results without doing the work... the hard work... the work the matters most, often begins every day at 4am - a note, my day starts at 4:50am ;-).
Whether you - the potential future reader - are thinking about going into business or you've already been at it for a while, Jon's book is relevant. Jon breaks things down into a few simple steps - Learn, Edit, Master, Harvest and Guiding. I found it interesting that in some parts of my life (I'm 45) I'm living in the phase of guiding... where as other areas of my live, it's very evident that I'm still learning and editing... other ares, I'm in mastery. There was a lot of clarity that came from listening/reading to this book.
Secondly, truth. No where in the book does Jon BS you into thinking success will be easy or simple. "Focus on 10 parts mastery, and 1 part promotion... not the other way around. Better yet, focus on 100 parts mastery and 1 part promotion."
Jon calls out the reader by calling out himself, describing times in his life when he began living with an entitled attitude. I realized I had done the same. Very humbling to read.
Lastly, I have never listened to an audio book like the way Jon narrates it. If you've ever listen to Simon Sinek, Seth Godin, John Maxwell, Malcolm Gladwell... the don't really bring a large scale of emotion to their narrating... which really doesn't bother me, it's just my observation. Simon Sinek puts a little more life into his audiobook than most... but Jon Acuff... I had a lot of laughs throughout the book. It was as if he recorded the book in front of a live audience, as if I were in the audience. Very cool effect.
Is this a serious book about business and the journey of mastery? Yes, absolutely. However, because Jon doesn't take himself so seriously, he speaks with humility and genuine care for the reader, I fear others will pass on the book. It's not "Jack Welch" enough. It's not "Jim Collins" enough. What I appreciate about Jon is he clearly understands and remembers "Rule Number 6" - never heard rule number 6? Google it.
Remember rule number six: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M-HG6X6fpBM
Reader... remember that in order to live a life of awesome, you have to purposely live and do work beyond average. Not everyone is prepared to do that... are you?
This book really did not do it for me. Just a bunch of rambling and personal stories. It awoke a little awesome, but there are much better choices out there then this book. I kind of feel ripped off by Dave Ramsey. The only reason I got this book was because I always heard him talking about it on his pod cast.
This book will not help you Start, but you can read all about Jon's life....
Yawn.....
Until I got this book. I love it! It's funny. It's motivational. It's got points that make you think - YES! I too can be AWESOME! or maybe I can be MORE AWESOME than I am being right now.
I like that. John Acuff sounds really young to me. I think I'm getting to that point where policemen, doctors and motivational speakers look like high school students. But I like his freshness. His gratitude for where he is now and how he got there.
The book has great points. They aren't entirely new, but sometimes you need to hear something or be reminded a lot of an idea before it kicks in.
Some of which are:
start being awesome now
know your weakness
be realistic
take time to be selfish - in the morning (read the book)
stand on the shoulders of giants
the learning-harvesting-editing cycle
and the overall theme Malcolm Gladwell is amazing.
Sounds good no?

What about a person who has skills in their career but is not one who is ready or even wants public attention. I want to make waves but I want to be the brains behind someone elses face. How to be the introverted success story? I like to solve problems I don't want to stand up talking about it. We know that is where a lot of these self-help folks make their money, in speaking engagements, blogs, or pod-cast subscriptions.
So to me this is not a self-help book, but a story of someone who changed their average into extrodinary.

However, the problem I have I was not too set on learning his background on how he got to where he is, I would rather have more examples that he could have use but is pretty common with Gen X and Gen Y influencers. Too much emphasis was placed on him and not enough on the "how".
The book was good but it just missed the mark for me, and his social media engagement is too self serving for my style but hey he is a good speaker and blogger but I was disappointed because it did not motivate me to start. Interesting story is the best assessment that I can give for this book.

People love to write short lines like this and put sevreal of them on a page by themsleves with 17 sub-headings per page.
Who started this?
It's really addictive, isn't it?
Like getting little text messages from the author every two seconds.
I blame Rob Bell.
The paragraph is dying quickly in this age of blogging and texting, and perhaps deservedly so. However this book manages to use all of these modern writing devices to communicate some timeless principles effectively and humorously. Then it goes a step further by not just suggesting applications but putting them in appendices that are extremely user friendly. I found this book laugh out loud funny and extemely valuable as a tool for finding further direction.
Moreover, I found the book gave me permission to do two extremely important acts concerning my future: A) start doing something about it and not think about it. and B) Experiment without the pressure of having my experiment become a lifetime commitment after just 3 months.
So, if you are seeking direction for a major life change or just looking to confirm a little right turn you want to take , you cannot go wrong with this boook.
Now, I'm off to live my dream and create a blog to elongate America's attention span through the use of extended paragraphs.
Pray for me.

In this era of entrepreneur ventures and independent thinking, we often forget there are virtues to slowing down and thinking about whether or not being an entrepreneur is worth it in the first place. The internet might be a land of opportunity, but is it the right opportunity for you?
"Start" answers some of the lingering questions that might keep you up and night. It is about considering where your leverage and power in the world of self-starting is with good humor and great ideas along the way. It is about learning that a job gives you a moment to say no to something you'd have to say yes to if you were struggling for money.
This is a pretty amazing book all around, but it also delves into some of the areas I tend to have problems connecting with. I generally don't concern myself with legacy. I don't have a family to worry about. I don't have children to feed or dogs to groom. Still, even with this as an obstacle to my own growth and self-acceptance, I still recommend this book highly to anyone on the verge of starting some sort of entrepreneurial venture.
If you think you're ready to set out on your own now, take a few days and digest this book. You'll be better off for it and you might even see the value in being a part of the cubicle farm for another year or so along the way.
