The latest scientific research reveals that egg quality has a powerful impact on how long it takes to get pregnant and the risk of miscarriage. Poor egg quality is in fact the single most important cause of age-related infertility, recurrent miscarriage, and failed IVF cycles.
Based on a vast array of scientific research, It Starts with the Egg provides a comprehensive program for improving egg quality in three months, with specific advice tailored to a variety of fertility challenges— including endometriosis, unexplained infertility, diminished ovarian reserve, PCOS, and recurrent miscarriage.
With concrete strategies such as minimizing exposure to common toxins, choosing the right vitamins and supplements to safeguard developing eggs, and harnessing nutritional advice shown to boost IVF success rates, this book offers practical solutions that will help you get pregnant faster and deliver a healthy baby.
“Rebecca Fett’s first edition of ‘It Starts with the Egg’ revolutionized the way the fertility community viewed supplements and the impact of environmental toxins on reproductive health. Through summarizing evidence-based research, she took the guess work out of recommendations. I’m thrilled to have a new edition to recommend to my patients."

2 fertility doctors were pushing IVF on me and my husband, while my naturopath was the only one that believed I could conceive naturally. And with a few minor tweaks from my naturopath (but largely from the help of the advice from this book) we were able to conceive.
My issue was low AMH (apparently I had the AMH of someone in their early 40's), which is what they call diminished ovarian reserve (DOR). Besides that, me and my husband had no other issues. I followed the plan outlined in the book (ubiquinol, high dose vitamin D, prenatal with MTHF, omega 3, NAC, vitamin C, occasionally some vitamin E) for about 10 months, but as noted in the book, I needed to get my hypothyroidism under control (with prescription medication) as it is an obstacle to fertility. So the first cycle that my thyroid levels normalized (with the help of my prescription), I became pregnant for the first time! I really believe that improving my egg quality by following the plan in this book helped me to not only conceive but to have the good news we received from the genetic testing (NIPT).
I am extremely grateful to the author for writing this book!
Loved this book so much i have since then purchased it for 2 friends walking the fertility treatment path.
The recommended supplements/advanced plan really helped me get my egg quality up to speed (I got 8 blastocysts and I'm 38!)
It's well researched, helpful, well written and essential for those going through IVF. I'm now using it for the embryo transfer!
Overall, good book. I would recommend it.
I also like it because it doesn’t preach. I’m never going to be the totally clean eating + never have a glass of wine (except of course if this works!!) + only do gentle yoga and meditate every day girl... so these things are practice and achievable.

I threw out all our plastic kitchen stuff and bought ceramic/glass containers and bowls etc. No takeaways as they come hot in plastic. No disposable coffee cups or receipts. No perfume. Only use moisturisers that are natural like Faith organics. Bodyshop would also be fine.
Also bought a water filter and cut out alcohol and caffeine. Also cut out a lot of sugar and refined carbohydrates. After 14 months TTC I have a positive pregnancy test today - about 2 months after buying this book.
I took all the supplements advised in the book for my situation.
Also followed all the advice :
- got rid of all the plastic in the house
- replaced toiletries and household products to non toxic
- no perfume or nail polish
- organic and healthy food
- better sleep
- no alcohol , no coffee ( I didn’t drink coffee before and not much alcohol so it was easy)
- I was in a much better state and shape
- I felt great and full of hope
But despite the 4 months of preparation my results were worse in quantity and quality. We had the same meds just slightly higher dose and the same sperm from the same frozen batch so the only thing was different - were my eggs after all the preparation and there were less of them and they were worse quality.
When they told me that I had less quantity - I still was full of hope and thought that at least the quality should be better but I was wrong.
Here is the comparison.
Before the book and change I had 6 eggs, 6 fertilized and 2 great quality embryos: one transferred and one frozen. It failed. But still have the frozen in the bank.
After applying the advice from the book:
5 eggs, 4 fertilized , 2 very average quality embryos , so both were transferred and none frozen, none took off.
We had a successful IVF before those two attempts and have an amazing son.
Unfortunately the book gave me false expectations and I was really surprised to see such poor results.
I did enjoy making some of the changes and will keep them as part of my lifestyle.
But this book and around £1500 I’ve spend on all the changes and supplements didn’t make any positive difference to our IVF cycle.
Exactly a year ago (Nov 18) DH (33) and I (29) were preparing for our IVF/ICSI cycle. This was due to severe Male Factor. His sperm was surgically retrieved a few months before and it was my turn. They then discovered I had low ovarian reserve so we weren’t expecting too many eggs but to our dismay we only got 5. Non of them fertilised (possibly coz of frozen sperm, sperm viability, possibly coz of egg quality). It was a really low point in life and I wouldn’t wish it on anyone.
I’m a reader and an optimist so I started researching heavily and came across this book in January this year. I followed some of the key bits of advice, and the advice relevant to me (changed my prenatal, started on CoQ10, and didn’t start on DHEA despite wanting to - my bloods came back normal so didn’t make sense to rock that boat yet). I also got my husband on supplements (vitamins, CoQ10) and his doctor prescribed him Clomid. We also (mildly) followed some of the lifestyle and diet recommendations.
Now the clinic had agreed to batch retrieve my eggs as my count was low and the plan was collect and freeze eggs over a few cycles while DH is on Clomid and prepares for yet another MicroTese to try with fresh (but still immotile) sperm.
HOWEVER at my retrieval in March (2–3 months after the changes), they got 14 eggs (12 mature!). It was unbelievable! I had another retrieval in May where they got 12 eggs. So I now had 26 eggs frozen away. From having 5 eggs just five months before....! I really want to thank you Rebecca!!
The rest of the story is miraculous too...my DH’s microTese yielded good results and the clinic went out of their way to ensure the lab has the right sperm viability test this time (HOS test) and also made sure to use the sperm fresh from the tese. As the sperm sample was decent we decided to thaw all 26 of my eggs. 22 survived and were injected. 15 fertilised (!) and 7 made it to Blastocyst. Nothing short of a miracle and I still tear up thinking about it.
We had a frozen embryo transfer in August and I’m blessed to say we’re 16w pregnant.
Please buy this book - it changed our lives. You can get snippets of advice from reviews but it’s best to read the research, the analysis for yourself and see what’s best for your situation. I believe there’s a V2 - get that by all means. And all the very best on your journey.
Thank you Rebecca - God bless you.
One thing I did notice when looking at the reviews was how many gave negative feedback, saying it had lowered egg quality etc. I ignored this, and I wish I hadn't.
I started monitoring my ovulation prior to ttc (before reading this book) and was regular as clockwork. Then I read this book, and made every change the book suggests:
1. Diet... cut out any pop, crisps, sugary goodness, potatoes, carrots, even ate less fruit (yes, this is all in the book)
2. Threw away any plastic, and stopped buying anything in cans and plastic where I could and replaced with glass
3. Stopped using anything scented and chemically - from shampoo, to no nail varnish etc... everything suggested
4. Stopped exercising too much
5. Took a range of the recommended supplements and vitamins
Basically everything suggested in the book.
However, 2-3 months after implementing many changes and reading this book (it takes an egg 2-3 months to develop) I stopped ovulating. My periods became shorter and shorter and I wasn't seeing a notable change in BBT. After making the changes I basically stopped ovulating. I decided to ignore the 6-12 months before contacting a GP and went straight to my doctor, as well as being more normal for me in terms of eating and drinking. Now, thanks to a knowledgeable GP I am back to ovulating. I am also able to eat a biscuit or three without having a breakdown in thinking that I am going to destroy my eggs.
TTC is a stressful, and lonely journey. It is so unbelievably hard and I would have done anything to try to conceive as quickly as I could. But because of this, and because I had been waiting so long for my partner to want to try for a baby I was desperate, and took the advice to the extreme, messing up by system in the process and giving myself more stress than i could ever imagine.
So I am writing this review mainly to say firstly, you know your body, you know when you need to be patient, and when to try it with medical assistance, and secondly, the people helping with fertility, GPs and fertility clinics in the UK and whatever you have everywhere else, usually just want to help you. Go and speak to them, don't read these books which can end up stressing you out and messing up your body in the process. Implementing the changes in this book messed up my ovulation. Arguably my system would have fallen out of sync regardless of what I did, but it seems a big coincidence that it timed exactly with reading this book.
If you are looking at buying this book because you are, like me, desperate to conceive, then know I am with you, I understand how you feel, but before making changes just speak to your doctor, or a fertility clinic, and follow their advice. Don't wait for 6 months to pass, trust yourself and your body. Sending you prayers, luck or whatever you believe in. Just don't do too much too soon!
