Lily and her ex-husband, Ryle, have just settled into a civil coparenting rhythm when she suddenly bumps into her first love, Atlas, again. After nearly two years separated, she is elated that for once, time is on their side, and she immediately says yes when Atlas asks her on a date.
But her excitement is quickly hampered by the knowledge that, though they are no longer married, Ryle is still very much a part of her life—and Atlas Corrigan is the one man he will hate being in his ex-wife and daughter’s life.
Switching between the perspectives of Lily and Atlas, It Starts with Us picks up right where the epilogue for the “gripping, pulse-pounding” (Sarah Pekkanen, author of Perfect Neighbors) bestselling phenomenon It Ends with Us left off. Revealing more about Atlas’s past and following Lily as she embraces a second chance at true love while navigating a jealous ex-husband, it proves that “no one delivers an emotional read like Colleen Hoover” (Anna Todd, New York Times bestselling author).

The thing with this book is that I loved the familial narratives more than the romance, probably because we already know how amazing Atlas is—we just get to see more of it. It wasn't like reading the first book where Ryle left me off balance, where I wondered how Atlas would fit into the narrative, and where I worried for Lily. In fact, the latter of those is probably something that could have been amped up a tad to add more tension to the story, but it was fine as is.
Essentially, I knew what to expect from all the characters that appeared in It Ends with Us, so it was actually new additions to the story and how they wove into these characters lives that really brought It Starts with Us to life for me. I love the hard conversations about family and family loyalty. I love the empathy alongside the hard boundaries.
It Starts with Us continues the conversation of generational cycles in families but with an added layer that I won't spoil, and that's what I love this book for more than anything.
First of all, if you don't remember or didn't read the first book there are a few trigger warnings such as an abusive relationship, alcohol abuse, attempted rape, cancer, childbirth, depression, domestic abuse (graphic), infertility (brief mention but then resolved), pregnancy, suicide (brief discussion) and violence.
In fear that I could not remember something from the first one (It Ends With Us, #Itendwithus). But the book has light ways to bring us memories from past situations.
I enjoy the Author writing its simple and easy to flow throughout the book, it was extremely fast passed in my opinion I had to stop reading it to make it last longer, so I could have this feeling of being in this world longer, I love Atlas and Lily, they have a special place in my heart.
Lily is dealing with her emotions putting her mother's duties first, and trying to deal with her ex-husband Ryle. She evolves along the book showing confidence and growth possible with the support of others like her mother and sister in law with whom she keeps a lovely friendship, Not only Lily finds challenges but Atlas's life changes have ways, giving him a purpose to fight harder for what he loves, I will end this review just saying that nothing felt cringe in my opinion, which sometimes this is not the case in situations where real but serious topics can be badly portraited. Both books will be easily reread a few times by me.
When I found out there was going to be a sequel, I did not want it. I didn’t feel it was needed, and leaving the possibilities of Lily and Atlas’ happy endings were up to the readers imaginations…
But then I read this book and oh my gosh, my heart was ripped out of my chest all over again.
Colleen Hoover did an incredible job portraying that just because you leave an abusive relationship, it does not mean you’re safe. She didn’t paint it in pretty flowers for Atlas & Lily, she made them put in the work and all the challenges that come with survival after an abusive relationship.
I don’t know why I was surprised because CoHo is incredible in all she does, but she delivered.
If you read It Ends With Us, you need to read It Starts With Us. And if you haven’t read either, you need to read both.
This story is beautifully told. And I am grateful Atlas and Lily have the happy ending they deserve.

"I'm exactly where I belong, being loved by Atlas Carrigan."
I was lucky to receive a copy of the book a day before its publication. The tale of Atlas and Lily finally in my hands. And, it really met my expectations.
The book begins immediately from where we were left off in It Ends with Us. Atlas and Lily meet again after almost two years, and it is explosive. They both want to be together, but they both have problems in their lives; Lily is afraid of Ryle, and how he is going to react if he finds out about Atlas, and Atlas' past comes back to haunt his present.
They have to figure out how to merge their lives together despite the obstacles, the difficulties, and the pain. Their bond though is so strong.
To be honest, in It Ends with Us, I felt that I didn't get the chance to know Atlas enough. I wanted to learn more about his past, his character, his life. This book satisfied this need of mine. If you think, you fell in love with Atlas in the first book... well, you will definitely fall in love with him more now. He is so kind, patient, loving, and truly, the ideal book boyfriend. He loves fiercely.
Lily is a very strong female character. I admire her tenacity and her inner monologue. She wants the best for her daughter, and that means dealing with Ryle, who is still fighting for her but in all the wrong ways.
I love how they learn about each other and their pasts. I won't spoil it for you. But, I really enjoyed it.
The secondary characters are a breath of fresh air. Alyssa, Marshall, Theo, etc. are well-written.
It gets emotional, happy and sad, but on the whole, the book ends with the catharsis, we all needed. It Ends with Us was heartbreaking in so many ways. It Starts with Us is heartbreaking in different ways, but you breathe happily and easily.
I read it in a few hours. I truly enjoyed it.

of neglect and abuse as a child , has grown into a caring , kind , considerate, loving man. The story is so well written, and side characters such as Josh and Theo, are also worried teenage souls who defy life and become admirable people. As ever well worth 5 stars. Some people may find the content disturbing, some may not realise how common it can be behind closed doors. It’s not a disease as such but a severe problem for all, that knows no social boundaries. It happens in all walks of life, poor and rich, educated and uneducated, and this novel
highlights this. The sort of book that leaves you thinking.

When Lily and Atlas finally bump into each other again after all this time there is no way that they will let this moment pass. They have alot to overcome but are willing to do whatever it takes.
I loved these characters and I'm glad that we get to see the HEA for these guys especially after what they've been through. Domestic violence is horrible to live with and I'm glad Atlas is the guy Lily needs in her life.
I do feel that it went a tad slow in the middle and that there adult relationship was quite rushed in to first gear quite fast but these two characters deserved happiness.
I love how this author writes and I can't wait to read more of her books in the future. 💜💚
