When Cora attends her sister’s birthday party, she expects at most a hangover or a walk of shame. She doesn’t anticipate a stolen wallet, leaving her stranded and dependent on Dean - her arch nemesis and ultimate thorn in her side.
And she really doesn’t anticipate waking up in shackles in a madman’s basement.
To make matters worse, Dean shares the space in his own set of chains.
After 15 years of teasing, insults, and practical jokes, the ultimate joke seems to be on them. The two people who always thought they’d end up killing each other must now work together if they want to survive.
But Cora and Dean have no idea their abductor has a plan for them. A plan that will alter the course of their relationship, blur the line between hate and love, and shackle them together with far more than just chains.

I could not put it down! I'm it usually into dark stories, but this one sucked me in, spun me around like a tornado and spit me out on the other side like it does to the characters as well. I'm in awe of the authors talent to weave everything together with so much emotion. I will remember this book for a long time, which is saying something, because I read a lot of books. I will be reading her entire collection of books after this.
This story and characters will break your heart, over and over, but it's so worth it.
The beginning of this book was a lot to digest, but the story that unfolded was devastating, tragic, and beautiful at the same time.
The first quarter was so hard for me to get through, but once I did I loved every second of this book.
I am still processing but truly it was so beautiful😭😭😭😭
In the beginning of the book we meet Cora who is out celebrating her sisters birthday. We are introduced to Dean, her sisters fiancé) and we quickly learn that these two do not like each other. They try to be civil but are constantly bickering and pulling pranks on each other.
When Cora runs into a certain situation towards the end of the night, she turns to Dean for help. What should have been a ride home turned into so much more after being kidnapped, knocked out and waking up in a basement with shackles around your ankles. To make matters worse, Dean has been subjected to the same fate.
This book goes through the period they were captive as well as after. What Cora and Dean have to endure during that period is gut wrenching, disgusting and simply awful. I spent the first half of the book in tears. I honestly thought that the characters were going to continue to spiral but Jennifer had a beautiful way of guiding them towards a well deserved happy ending.
While it is a difficult read, I would read it again. The connection between the characters is so raw and real.
The first part of the book was so intense i felt like i was watching a thriller movie and i didn’t know what would happen next. The second half of the book was really emotional and heartbreaking for the both of them. They deal with so much trama and guilt. It broke my heart to see them going through this. But i feel like they need to deal with their issues on their own and not together so they can bring out the best in them.
The last part of the book is here the magic of healing happens and it so beautiful to see the growth, the struggle, the most important part the love between them. It’s a beautiful story full of pain, guilt, betrayal, struggle, healing and love.
Go into this book with a open mind you wont regret it.

Dean and Corabelle (Cora) have been enemies since high school, constantly bickering and playing pranks on one another. What make matters worse for Cora is that Dean is about to marry her sister so she knows this man is going to be in her life whether she likes it or not. Needing a ride home on the evening of her sisters birthday celebrations, she reluctantly asks Dean if he can pick her up after losing her wallet. What they don't realise is this night will forever change them. While driving home Dean is pulled over by who he thinks is the police, unfortunately it is a sadistic serial killer who has just chosen them both as his next victims 🥺😭.
I found this story truly heartbreaking, I could of cried so many times because of what they are subjected to by this monster while chained up in a dark basement hoping they will see the light of day again. What they endured was soul destroying and all you want to do is take their pain away. They find solace in eachother and over time become their own safe havens when they felt suffocated by everything else.
I have no words to describe how much I love Dean 🥰🖤, he adores Cora and just wants to help her heal, wants to make her feel safe and even in her darkest moments he's there singing to her or whispering words of strength. This man melted me, while helping Cora he was trying to fight away his own nightmares and demons that he was struggling to deal with😭.
Poor Cora, I can't begin to imagine what it must of felt like in that basement while she was being treated like piece of meat by that horrible tyrant. She was a true fighter and I am in awe of her determination to escape this horror and the strength she showed even in her weakest moments was incredible.
This story isn't just about love but it's also about survival and the recovery that comes afterwards. I've never rooted for two people more than I did for Dean and Cora to get their HEA. @author.jenniferhartmann you are a beautiful writer, this was my first novel by you but it will certainly not be my last and I couldn't recommend this book enough.
(Trigger Warning: Sexual Assault)

Objectively, I can see why people wouldn’t like this. First, there’s the triggering content. Then, there’s the fact that the hero, Dean, has been in a relationship for 15 years with the heroine, Cora’s, sister. Some of Cora’s behavior is frustrating to read, too.
But I don’t care. The content didn’t trigger me. I liked how Hartmann explored trauma and what it does to people. Sometimes it felt like Dean and Cora couldn’t escape the drama. That could’ve felt over-the-top, but it never did. The Dean dating Cora’s sister was probably the hardest thing to believe. They were together for 15 years and only recently got engaged. There was just some stuff around that that felt unrealistic. Some reviews say Hartmann tried to make the sister, Mandy, a villain to excuse Cora and Dean’s behavior. I disagree. Mandy came across as a normal woman. She reacts in potentially harsh, but in believable ways.
Cora does kind of play with Dean. She constantly pushes him away and then pulls him back. It is incredibly frustrating for the reader, but also Dean. Personally, I thought it worked. It shows you how hurt Cora is and how much she needs professional help.
I adored this story even though I balled my eyes out for most of it. I definitely plan on reading more books by Jennifer Hartmann. This is one of my favorite books of 2021.

Why do I read these kind of books right before I'm due to start my p*ri*d!? Granted, i may have gone into this blind, so definitely wasn't expecting to be crying at 2am, but here we are. My eyes still feeling sore from the lack of sleep and the tears! lol
*IMPORTANT*
If you haven't read this, I'd highly recommend going in blind, to have a more open mind about one of the main tropes! (unless you have triggers)
.
.
Whilst I've seen so many people talk about this book, I never actually looked at the blurb, I just added it to my tbr. And I'm glad I did because it definitely surprised me. If I had known it was going to be 'sisters boyfriend' trope, i probably would've already made judgements about Cora and Dean. Instead, I wasn't even 100% sure if Dean was going to be the H during the first chapter and a half or so!
"Yeah, well, you look like a... bonehead."
I certainly wasn't expecting what actually happens to them! But god, this was so heart-breaking and I think JH did an amazing job of making you feel in the moment with each character. And though I didn't like Mandy for the majority of this book, I can also see where she came from.
Likewise, part of why I didn't mind Cora and Dean getting together is because even though Dean had always had feelings, neither of them were acting on it because of that. It was solely due to the situation they were put in and recognising that only they knew what it truly felt like to be there in that time. And Dean was so sweet! The way Cora always thought he was some dumb loser, but actually he's probably the most profound character who was capable of seeing the wider picture.
"I promise you'll get it, and when you do, you'll look back and this will all make a h*ll of a lot more sense."
An emotional story that will definitely have you in tears, but also focuses on self-development and loving yourself! Such a good read, it reminded me of how I felt when I read Darling Venom. This was my first read from JH and I'll definitely be checking out more of her books!
"We can't give our heart to another without loving our own first."
*TW: PLEASE, for the love of god, if you have triggers, check the list before going into this book.

It’s dark so please check the triggers!
This was such an amazing book I devoured it and was up till 4am reading it I couldn’t put it down!!!
Dean is coras sisters boyfriend after she loses her wallet she has no one else to call but dean and she doesn’t like him at all. While waiting a creepy overweight guy is trying to hit on her till dean shows up! This go terribly wrong and they both end up in his basement 3 weeks of awful stuff trapped.
I have to say I loved dean and Cora together it was amazing! Is it dark yes if you don’t like rape then please check the warnings!! Great read
Also like to say this was a new author for me aswel and it did not disappoint once loveddddd it
