Strategy Insights is a collection of short stories that really boil down to essence of strategy. These insights cannot be found anywhere else. I have read many books on strategy and realistically I always have a goal to try to read a book a month but work and life gets in the way and I continually end up failing to meet this threshold.
What I really like about Strategy Insights is that each tiny self-capitalized story can be read on its own. For example, I do not work in the oil sector and oil has nothing to do with my industry. However, during the respective Oil story within the book, it really helped me change my perspective. Here is what I gathered: Say the USA and leading nations do switch to renewable energy shortly this decade. There are a ton of growing emerging markets that are about to reach prominence the same way China did last decade but now in the 2020s. Is it reasonable to assume that these growing nations just coming into their own, would also switch to more expense/complicated renewable energy? Or is it more likely they will leverage cheap existing oil so they can focus on growing?
There really isn’t a right answer, but this line of thinking absolutely convinced me that maybe oil wont go extinct as fast as the media says it will. It this type of insight that you get in Strategy Insights. There are tons of different seemingly not connected stories but they don’t have to be connected to extract this type of insight. Stories include really diverse topics such as productivity, E-Sports, Digital Transformation. Electric Vehicles etc. It is really exciting to capture this type of insight without having to read an entire book. If you want a very wide education in strategy reading smaller chapters vs. entire books you can’t go wrong Strategy Insights.
The book is a compilation of weekly notes that analyze the implications and how readers and their organizations should think about these events to gain a competitive advantage. These are bite-sized lessons and examples to help you understand application of strategy, leadership, competition, business, and risk. The value of the book itself is having this content all in one place, rather than delivering unique content that has never been published before. Of course, the content itself is valuable if you are not already receiving the weekly notes, and my rating reflects the quality of the content, rather than the simple compilation and editing of the weekly notes. You should not be expecting that the individual insights are neatly tied together into a coherent whole, and that was not the objective of the book. What you can do is take the individual insights and build your own connections as you think about how various examples may share some commonalities, and how the process to develop these insights addressing different scenarios may be similar.
Strategy insights is a compilation of what FirmsConsulting sends every week to their subscribers on various topics relating to strategy. The topics are wide ranging, cover all areas of business, and multiple industries. At times you get FC's thinking on GeoPolitics and cultural topics as well. What is great about the book is the sheer breath of topics that they cover (too numerous to mention in this review) and how they see the world from their perspective. Every chapter (which covers one week) has lessons on how strategy can be applied to further one's career and improve business results. If there is a drawback to the book it is that they literally compiled together what they send every week to subscribers. The result is that you get repeated references to some of the FC products that subscribers can access. This can get annoying to some readers who may not be FC members. Overall, it is a book that will give you a window into thinking on business and strategy that you will not get anywhere else. Well worth the read.
It is a skill to be able to recognize the overarching themes behind scattered headlines (and overlooked statistics, ala Census Bureau). Each mini-piece (around the 800-1000 word mark) delivers that, but does not stop there. The pieces are put together in a way such that the consumer of the piece will be prompted to think about how the theme will impact the arena where they are playing (the so what?). You will find open-ended questions for YOU to think about in YOUR own context. The open-ended questions, rather that step-by-step specifics that may not necessarily be applicable to each and every content, is a strength as it allows the potential reach and impact of reading each piece to cut across industries, geographies, and maybe even eras.
This book is a compilation of Firms Consulting strategic insights, available in podcast format every Monday at 8:00 am. These insights are not only recent but pure gems and spinning across several industries and verticals. What I like the most is the reflection and the relationship between understanding the facts and the possible strategic impacts these will have. Genuinely one of the most valuable sources of priceless information I've seen in the past 4-5 years. The book serves as an excellent compilation of insights and critical thinking that will help you to bring your professional career to the next level.
Most strategy books are either too theoretical or too high level. This book is about a methodology that can be implemented with rigor and depth. As a strategy consultant, I recommend this book to be distributed to every consultant working on his/her own or part of a consulting firm. It’s a must.
This book helps you understand various events and ideas by activating your strategic mindset. The first in a series of strategy books and podcasts that have proven very useful for my work in strategy formulation and implementation across a variety of mission areas.
This re-publishing of Monday Morning insights shared incredibly powerful thinking that can serve as model for how to think through macro-economic changes and how they can apply to variety of corporate/industry decision making. Building customized insights is the future of business, and the more you can absorb and emulate thinking in the series, the better. Well done!
Long time listener to the podcast! Having this book though was helpful to refresh and go deeper into the strategy/models/insights. The kindle version also provides links to the articles that are referenced which gave greater clarity into how the insight is applied. 5/5
