As a Christian, I was excited to read the 17-page excerpt of this book on chapters.ca. I've read "Stuff White People Like" and thought this would be a similar take on the subject of the Church. Wrong!

The author writes in first-person. Fine for reviews like this, not fine for generalizations about the Christian society as a whole. Also, his titles of the "things" Christians like aren't things. They're behaviours, thoughts, and ideas. They're not at all simple. For example: "Stuff" white people like are "sweaters." Simple! "Things" Christians like are "Being secretly jealous that your pastor has a better car than you do." This is neither simple nor really-funny-because-its-true.

Some of the "things" are generally true, but his expansion on the subject leaves you scanning for the elusive funny bits. If you want a book that points out the lovable fun of church life, I recommend reading the works of Adrian Plass.

4.0 out of 5 stars Sub-culture satire
Reviewed in Canada πŸ‡¨πŸ‡¦ on July 2, 2010
Jon Acuff's blog-now-book "Stuff Christians Like" is a direct rip-off from the highly popular blog/book "Stuff White People Like." On purpose. Because one of the things that Christians like is ripping stuff off.

This book certainly wins my (completely arbitrary and made up) award for Best Introduction Ever:

If you buy this book, God will make you rich.

I was going to say, "If you read this book," but I'm pretty sure people who get it at the library won't receive the same amount of awesomeness as the people who buy it.

Acuff is the right mix of laugh out loud funny and poignant insight. As someone that appreciates and enjoys satire but finds most Christian satire as savouring strongly of bitterness (my love), I appreciate that Jon is funny without being hurtful, poking fun at the stuff while holding love for the people that do it. It's gentle, dorky humour about the things we all know we do.

Small essays on topics ranging from church to love to the Bible and even, the youth camp "Saturday Night Cryfest" (as the wife of a former youth pastor, um, YES), Acuff gives me the sense that he is laughing with us, not at us.

My personal favourites:

* Using "Faith Like a Child" as an escape pod from difficult theological discussions.
* Watching R-rated movies but only if they are violent.
* Judging fundamentalists for being judgmental
* Hating on mega churches
* Using "Let me pray about it" as a euphemism for "no"
* Falling in love on a mission trip
* The metro sexual worship leader
* Fearing your church will do something wacky the time you invite a friend
* Wishing you had an easy job, like one at church
* Side hugs

To be honest, on Jon Acuff's blog, my favourite posts are almost always what he refers to as his "Serious Wednesday" posts. They are worth subscribing to his blog for, my friends.

Verdict: If you have spent any amount of time around evangelical Christians, you'll laugh, you'll groan, you'll cry, you'll feel like someone read your mail. However, it is definitely a sub-culture book for us evangelicals.

5.0 out of 5 stars It's like being on the inside of an inside joke.
Reviewed in Canada πŸ‡¨πŸ‡¦ on April 12, 2010
You know that feeling you get when you are on the inside of an 'inside joke'. You know those stupid references to situations that happened on some road trip or outing with friends. Usually it's just a stupid word or catch phrase that outside of its context makes absolutely zero sense, but people who were there will still shout it out 2 years later and everyone that knows what is going on will laugh and remember, but everyone else who wasnt a part of that group will just look at you funny and think youre weird. DIDDLY IN THE MIDDLY, BINGO BANGO BONGO! Yup, I just threw one out there, now this blog post just go awkward... anyway. That exact situation is what Stuff Christians Like book by author/blogger/humorist Jon Acuff is. Its like reading 250 odd pages of inside jokes that most us Christians get, and laugh at because weve experienced it.

Reading through his book, is like someone has been in my head for all 28 years of my life, writing down everything I thought, experienced and have pondered about Christianity. Its really kind of a surreal experience that only a small subset of people will get. This book isnt for everyone, but for those who it is for, will laugh, cry and say to themselves, yup Jon you nailed that. Cause you know what? Ive Booty, God, Bootyd before, Ive had the internal conversation about how do I break up with my small group, and Ive used the words Missional Postmodern Relevance in a sentence before. In the end though, the best part of Jons satire is that he usually ends it with a nugget of truth. Like in an OHenry bar, where the comedy is the chocolaty goodness but you know you just bought the bar because of the nugget on the inside. I continue to read Jon because hes funny, but mainly because he lands on some truth that I needed to hear or be reaffirmed of.

I recommend you read his blog, don't skip serious Wednesday, and support the guy by picking up his book. Its only $10 and makes perfect reading material for those moments when you need to not take yourself so seriously and have a good laugh.

5.0 out of 5 stars Can't put it down!

This book is hilarious. It arrived on Thursday, just before I was leaving to visit my future in-laws, so I took it with me, thinking I might be able to sneak a few pages here and there. On Thursday night, I arrived before my fiance and the house was nearly empty, so I curled up in the corner of the sofa and read for a little bit, thoroughly enjoying it. When everyone else arrived home, the book ended up on the coffee table where it (sort of) stayed for the rest of the weekend.

My fiance's brother picked it up and couldn't stop laughing. He read through the entire book in the course of a day, reading out parts that struck him as particularly amusing. My future father-in-law was frequently in stitches (he is generally an even-tempered man). And a group of his friends were over one morning and the book was passed around, laughed over and eagerly discussed.

It pokes fun at the little quirks Christian culture has and it gives us permission to laugh at ourselves. It helps us to stop taking ourselves so seriously and, wonderfully, points out the ways our thoughts aren't true. Jon Acuff does a great job of mixing humor and sincerity, and, on his blog especially, continues to point to God's great love.

I've already thought of several people I know who would love this book. I definitely recommend it.

This book is EXCELLENT.

Well-written, witty, funny, and most of all: TRUE.

Oh, so many times did I laugh because I recognized how true his comments are for me, and those around me.
I am consistently referencing, or quoting 'passages' from the book with friends.
I only wish it came with a topical index at the back, so I could more quickly find that tid-bit of hilarity in the moment!

In addition, Acuff has some solid 'serious' parts, too, especially as one nears the end of the book. Quality work that makes you think about your life as a Christian.

I'm looking forward to a Volume 2!

I found Jon Acuff to be very funny and spot-on when it came to his satirical look at modern Christian culture. Although I have been familiar with Acuff's blog, StuffChristiansLike.net, for years, I have never been a regular reader of the blog. In fact, every entry in this book was new to me. The true hilarity in this books happens when the reader comes across an essay that covers a topic that is familiar to their own life. This relatability happened to me many times while reading this book. I thought it was interesting that Acuff chose to end his humorous book with more serious essays on how Christians should live. Although I think that his insights were valuable, there was a sense in which the book ended on a down note. Again, I must emphasize that I liked what he had to say, but it felt out of place after pages and pages of satirical joke-telling. It is as if Acuff felt like he owed it to the audience, or to God, to have something more helpful tacked on the end.

Here are some of my favorite entries in the book (in no particular order):

Trying Not To Complain Around Missionaries (p. 30)

Feeling Slightly Disappointed When Someone Accepts Our Fake Offer Of Generosity (p. 45)

Just Using God's Favorite Word When We Pray (p. 52)

The Seven People You Meet In A Prayer Circle (p. 53)

The Hedge of Protection (p. 68)

Raising Our Hands In Worship (p. 87)

Fearing Your Church Will Do Something Wacky The One Time You Invite A Friend (p. 90)

Leaving Room For The Holy Spirit When You Dance (p. 95)

Using Vacation Bible School As Free Babysitting (p. 96)

Finding Typos In The Worship Music (p.97)

Losing The Will To Clap During Songs (p. 100)

Mid-Prayer Music That Materializes Out Of Nowhere (p. 107)

Telling Testimonies That Are Exciting Right Up Until The Moment You Became A Christian (p. 125)

Suddenly Realizing You Own Fourteen Bibles (p. 149)

Not Throwing Away A Bible (p. 157)

Skipping Church If You Catch Even A Whiff Of A Guest Speaker (p. 178)

Being Voluntold (p. 180)

What I like about the book and the blog is that it is laugh out loud funny and completely honest. Jon is not afraid to make fun of himself and Christian culture. There are so many things that he puts out there in the open. Once he has done that you begin to think, "wow, I have done that before", and just laugh at how ridiculous you actually are.

Jon believes in laughter and that God wants us to laugh. Which I honestly agree with wholeheartedly. For if we cannot laugh at ourselves of all people then there is something terribly wrong.

However, with all of the the humor that Jon throws at you it always has the ability to convict you in many ways.

I would recommend this book as a must read to anyone, Christian or not. I believe it paints a perfect picture of Christianity, which is a group of imperfect people saved by God who continually shows us endless love. The Bible states that we all have sinned, and to be able to constantly know that we have a Savior that has paid the ultimate price for that sin, and all we have to do is repent and accept Him as our Savior to get the reward to spend eternity with Him in Heaven. It cannot get much better than that, but as human beings we always seem to complicate things, and a lot of time all we can do is laugh at ourselves.

As a side note, if you ever get the opportunity to get to go and hear Jon speak definitely take advantage of it. I had the opportunity a while back and it was great.

Reasons You Should Get This Book:

* Relate - There will a lot of stuff Jon talks about in the book that you have don or can relater to in some way.
* Laughter - This book is filled with situations and thoughts that you cannot help but to laugh at.
* Honest - Jon is honest about a lot of things that Christian culture does not talk about.
* Conversation - It gives you countless topics for conversations. It could also be used as a small group book if you dare venture.
* Sketches - The drawings sketches that have been added as visual aids for the book are amazingly funny. I think all of his posted should have sketches with them. It would be great.
* "God will make you rich"

Congratulations to Jon on an awesome book, and new job. May doors continue to open for him.

I''m not a religious person, and while raised Roman Catholic, I do not follow any organized religion (I do, however, attend Mass once in a while and Christian churches and synagogues once in a while - I like the sense of community at each place if worship I visit). But as far as LITERALLY believing the Old Testament? A patriarchal God that takes interest in petty squabbles? Hell? Hell no! :-)

This is all to say that I picked up this book because I thought it would be EXACTLY like "Stuff White People Like" - it wasn't...

As soon as I knew Acuff WAS not writing a snarky and sardonic satire on Christianity, I put it down for a bit.

I picked if up again, and I am glad I did. I enjoyed Acuff' s sense of humor. his way of relating so many things regarding everyone's daily lives to his faith. I felt like he was sitting across from me in my living room, talking to me, and just shooting the s***...in Biblical way, of course. Acuff is also smart - REALLY SMART - and I enjoyed his intellect very much.

Even with the "preachy" stories at the book's end, I didn't feel like he was shoving Christianity down my throat (although this section felt like an "obligatory contractual section").

Acuff is a great humorist - there are a few passages that ate SCREAMINGLY HILARIOUS!

He's also very gentle and NOT a Bible-Thumping, Boob. I absolutely believe that, were he and I to find ourselves together someplace, he would not continue to "witness"/"convert me if I asked him to stop and told him that I wasn't interested.

Ms. Acuff's photographs were OUTSTANDING, as well as the outstanding illustrations. They PERFECTLY complimented this book.

Acuff will never be able to convert me to Christianity; I walk away from this book with a deep respect of Acuff's beliefs an his faith...I was HIGHLY entertained by his witty prose, his awesome sense of humor, his intellect, and his beautiful, patient and wonderful gentleness. If I ever meet him, I'm going in for a hug - Full Frontal, Acuff - not some wussy (and vaguely homophobic) "side-hug.!"
