The form of the book is in the form of following an engagement from beginning to end. This allows you to really understand what skills is needed and when.
As a consultant it is difficult to grasp how all these skills fit together; analysis, building relationships with clients, selling, etc. because you are barely exposed to all these aspects as you go up the ranks in a consulting firm. What this book gives you is the whole suit of skill sets needed to successfully manage and deliver an engagement that would take you years of experience and exposure to seniors.
If you are a consultant, you are doing yourself a major disservice by not reading this book. This book will allow you to really elevate your game.
Even if you are not a consultant, the skills here apply to any complex business situation you will face. It’s about how to solve a business problem, manage it and deliver results successfully while managing a team. Your career will certainly see a significant boost.
Final conclusion: this book is a must buy!
As someone in industry, the book has provided insight towards how someone with general or minimal knowledge can dive into the problems, break down key issues and prioritize issues. The authors at Firmsconsulting have gone to great lengths to outline the key principles and requirements to succeed and follow up with detailed and rigourous examples through the mining study. The book answers how a top-tier consultant might think and process data and ideas, and how that translates into work. More important than the analysis, discussion about values, relationships and crisis management demonstrate the breadth of skill and savvy required for the workplace. This is a good read, and a worthy reference to comeback to throughout consulting engagements and even industry initiatives
I also enjoy reading the book a lot. While the skills the book tries to teach are very rare and not easy to acquire, this is not another tedious textbook that puts you to sleep. The book does an excellent job engaging readers. You'd feel watching a movie and being part of the team solving the challenge.

HOWEVER - I paid £36 to have a printed copy, and the quality is utterly unacceptable.
See for yourself in the attached photos.
The paper is the cheapest, thinnest budget printer-paper you could imagine. It's so poor - that you can see the print through the paper straight from the reverse side. The pages do not have sufficient weight to hold themselves straight, so the book splays open in gaps when you try to close it.
And the cutting of the pages is nothing short of shocking! Half the pages are cut back at an angle - so the are short of the cover! Other pages are also not cut straight - leaving parts of some pages protruding past adjacent pages.
In addition - the printed tables and charts are so ridiculously tiny, they are mostly illegible (including some very poor hand scribbled lines over printed tables - see attached).
May I suggest to the authors and publishers - that you use your consulting expertise towards rectifying the quality-control of your products? As well as consider if you really feel it's acceptable to deliver this to your customers?
This would be unacceptable at £3.60, let alone £36. I will be sending back for a refund. Highly disappointed.
My advice is to avoid this printed disaster and just get the Kindle version.

I particularly appreciated the effort on not just showing you how to do something within an engagement, but WHY a particular path or approach was taken. Few if any consultancy/problem solving books ever cover this. The emphasis on approaching problem solving from first principles and identifying what is unique about the problem situation, constantly testing your hypotheses and seeking out a superior solution was excellent. The material presented is extremely valuable for any entrepreneur, business leader or consultant.
Thank you Kristina for an incredibly useful book and for filling in many blanks left by other works in this domain. I hope you will publish several more ‘deep dive’ books for us all to benefit.

*** Detailed Review ***
At first, I wasn't sure what the incremental benefit of the book would be since I've been following many FC courses and work in the industry.
I was wrong!
The book surprised me with the level of detailed insight on what a GOLD STANDARD engagement should be like. From my first hand experience, it's better than a lot of internal training material at consulting firms, both in terms of content and delivery (storytelling aspect is perfect)
Summary: The book tells a story of an 8 week engagement for a Brazilian Gold Mine day-by-day (with relevant flashbacks)
Besides learning the key aspects of structuring a great engagement (to avoid any spoilers :) ), here are some additional things I learnt from the book:
1. How to manage client communication (all the subtle verbal cues you could use)
2. What many engagements avoid to do these days compared to the early days of consulting
3. Intuitive explanation of productivity (vs what it not).
4. Example of effective emails written for internal communication.
