5.0 out of 5 stars A Proper Review- Everything You Need To Know | Synology DS220+ 2 Bay Model
Reviewed in the United States on September 21, 2020
I have thoroughly tested this unit even AFTER it fulfilled my needs and satisfied me, just to make this review as in-depth and accurate as possible. Just so you are aware, I am reviewing the DS220+ 2 Bay Model. There are other models available on this same sale page that do not apply to this review.

TLDR: Right off the bat, for those looking for a quick answer, I highly recommend buying this Synology model over the others due to it's extremely good price to performance ratio. You won't find a better price for what you get with any of the others. Trust me, I spent two years looking into these NAS units.

Now into the intricate details this unit deserves:

- PC Specs -

CPU: Intel Celeron J4025 Dual Core @ 2 GHz (Can overclock to 2.9GHz, but I haven't figured out how yet)
RAM: 2GB (2048 MB) DDR4, which is actually removable and expandable up to 6GB.
OS: Custom Linux

The upgradeable 2GB of RAM is probably what sealed the deal for me. All cheaper options only offer smaller portions that are soldered on, meaning you're stuck with it until the unit is too slow and obsolete for the larger file sizes and more demanding use applications of the future. If you have plans to use this as a website or web app server, having a modular NAS is KEY. You will need the ability to expand WITH your project- whatever it is.

The 2GB included is plenty for my current use case, which is simply for scheduled automatic backups. The max RAM usage I've seen while running two simultaneous backups was about 43%, which leaves a healthy margin un-used should I decide to add on another service later on, like Plex.

For your hard drives, make sure to get 7200RPM drives that are made for NAS. They are designed to run 24/7 with an extremely low rate of error. SSDs are definitely not needed unless you are backing up large drives (2TB+) and would be extremely expensive. The NAS comes with dual ethernet ports to help distribute the network load in case that is a bottleneck for you.

- Pricing-

This Model definitely doesn't win the "Lowest price" cake, but at $300 that's not necessarily a bad thing. The cheapest NAS you could safely buy is the QNAP TR-002 2 Bay for $147, but unfortunately they didn't list their full specs anywhere, which made it impossible for me to rank it on my list, and sketched me out from trying it. The QNAP may have had a shot at making the top of my list, but who knows what CPU is included, how much RAM is included, and is it soldered in or not?

- Ease of use -

This was an easy setup for me as an experienced technology user. I'm used to setting up various OS systems and this was a more streamlined setup than I'm used to. You simply log in via it's web interface with a web browser and follow the simple setup steps. I'm glad Synology took the effort to make it easier for first time users, but you still may need some help from them to set up individual settings, as the included instructions and the DSM Help app inside the OS don't include as much information as I would like. I had to poke around the software to find some settings, and some things (Like overclocking the CPU), I never did find.

- Stability -

Thus far, with 23 days and 17 hours of uptime, I have yet to experience any problems that could hinder my backups or put my data in jeopardy. It's been nothing but smooth sailing. I have been using Synology's app, "Active Backup for Business" to back up all three of my computers. I was impressed that the software supports partial backups, meaning you can turn off a computer mid-backup, and resume the backup upon reboot. This is essential for computers with extremely large hard drives which are not desired to be running 24/7. The backup software made it incredibly easy to install the client software on each computer and set up a unique or similar backup schedule for each one. I've already done many backups (I have them scheduled for every other day) and I also did a restore to make sure it worked successfully.

- What you can use this for -

I'm not sure I'm prepared to write down every single use case, that is how many options you have with this NAS. I will list some of the most popular available packages though:

- Multiple backup programs
- Antiviruses
- Media servers (Including Plex)
- Web server package (Installs Nginx, Apache, and PHP)
- Wordpress
- Mail servers
- VPN server
- Chat server
- And way more

And for developers, you can install whatever framework or library you need.
- Docker
- Git
- Node.js
- Pearl
- PHP
- PHP MyAdmin
- Python
- And a lot more

This is a true NAS, and I'm glad Synology didn't cut usability for simplicity sake. The OS is still very simple and easy to navigate, but can also be used for advanced features. For example, terminal isn't available to access from the desktop, but you can enable SSH in the control panel and access terminal commands that way.

To sum it up, as far at price to performance goes, this easily takes the gold plaque. It has a low-mid range price with mid-high range performance that is rare to find nowadays.

I sincerely hope this review helped someone, as there was not nearly enough informative reviews while I was searching for myself. 1.0 out of 5 stars Manufacturing Defect - No RAM and M.2 NVMe SSD slots
Reviewed in Australia on May 14, 2021
Received DS920+ today and opened to find that there is no slot to add RAM module. Place where there should be a slot is fully covered by metallic sheet.. probably a machining/manufacturing defect.
Turned it upside down and opened the M.2 NVMe SSD slots - and there are no slots!!
I've processed a replacement for the item and the shipment and replacement experience has been good so far. But never expected such manufacturing defects from a company like synology.. afterall these things would be mass produced on assembly lines. Looks like very poor quality control!
