Next to the Bible, this book changed my life more than any other book, ever. I am so indebted to this author. This book utterly demystifies menstruation and conception. This book could have replaced all my sex education in school! I have been relying on FAM for 5 or 6 years and it has served as both birth control and a conception aid. My daughter was also born on the due date calculated from the date of ovulation, which I was able to determine using this book. If only this book were required reading for obstetricians, gynecologists and midwives! If you are looking for natural, side-effect-free birth control, look no further. I trust this method more than any other because I can determine exactly when I am and am not fertile. This book has been a huge blessing in my life. Thank you so much Toni!

This book was a revelation. I can't believe I was so ignorant about my own reproductive organs. Now I'm a mom and this book helped me to be more in touch with my fertility. I will definitely be giving it to my daughter and I recommended it to all of my friends.

Love it.
It was slightly damaged when I got it but I fixed it with some tape.

If you are looking to use natural family planning to either achieve or avoid pregnancy, then you need to have this book! As far as I'm concerned, there is no other fertility book out there that gives you as much easy-to-understand information as this one. You will learn to chart your basal body temperature, know when your cervical mucous is of fertile quality, and use the position of your cervix in order to discover your point of ovulation. It took us three months to conceive once we started using this method, but we had been trying for months before that with no results. If I hadn't started charting, I might never have found out that I ovulate on day 17 rather than the typically assumed 14 days. As for now, after trying to conceive for 6 months, I have found that I have a short luteal (post-ovulatory) phase which may require some medical intervention...again through the charting.
In addition to full color pictures that will illustrate fertility, you will also find dozens of charts to use to compare with your own in order to see if you are charting correctly or if you might have a problem.
I can't say enough good things about this book. It's wonderful to be able to "read" your body...you will understand your own rhythms in a whole new way after reading and implementing these methods. TAKING CHARGE OF YOUR FERTILITY will help you to take charge of a part of your life that may sometimes seem out of your control.

This book teaches the Fertility Awareness Method - a way of using a woman's physical symptoms to determine [with great accuracy] when she is fertile and when she is not. You can use this to either postpone pregnancy or acheive it. My husband and I have used this for two years now with perfect results, and two of my girlfriends who were dealing with infertily conceived ONE MONTH after I explained this method to them. [Both now have healthy babies to show for it!]. This book is well written, easy to understand, and very interesting!
I think every woman should have a copy of this book - it is criminal that we aren't even taught the rudimentary facts about how our bodies work!! Every couple should have a copy of this book so that both partners can understand their fertility.
My one complaint or comment: This book teaches you to use a barrier method of birth control during the Fertile Time. I have a personal problem with that though - if you use a condom to have intercourse while you are FERTILE, you are going to reduce your effectiveness rating drastically because condoms are much less effective than using FAM and avoiding intercourse during the fertile time. You can still get pregnant based on the failure rate of the condom [which is somewhere between 71-80% effective depending on the study your read] as opposed to the 99% effectiveness rating of FAM using abstinence. Just keep that in mind.
I love this book - you'll never be sorry for buying this one!!

I bought this book a week ago and so I'm afraid I cannot (yet) echo the glowing testimonials of some of the other reviewers who could claim that "Taking Charge..." helped them to conceive after years of failed attempts. However, I do feel qualified to deem it well-written and extremely informative.
Like another Canadian reviewer, I too was taught much of this fertility information while in junior high school. However, since I did not become sexually active until the age of...well... many years later, I had forgotten much of it by the time I needed to use it in my own life.
But I suspect that even people who have been taught this information in the past and managed to retain some of it would do well to buy a copy of "Taking Charge" just to have as a reference book (you know... Rogets Thesaurus, Oxford Concise, Chamber's Etymology right next to "Taking Charge of your Fertility...") Seriously, most of us women are sadly out of touch with how our bodies really function and how to work WITH our reproductive systems rather than AGAINST them in order to avoid or achieve pregnancy.
I am no hippy chick. I was on the pill for more than a decade, and have quite happily submitted my body to all sorts of unnatural activities, substances, chemicals, etc. But even a modern girl like me will really benefit from curling up in bed with a copy of this tome.

Brilliant book - all women should read this

Loved this book. I’m a scientist and found the whole book really fascinating, but you don’t need a science degree to understand the content, it’s an easy read, and you can pick and choose chapters as you please. It was a really eye opener for me.
This book was around long before the new apps that track the same data - using the book means you can track it yourself, but also understand what the data is telling you.
It may have been a complete coincidence, but after 6 months of trying with no luck, I bought this book and after 2 months of tracking my cycles I fell pregnant. Whether or not this book helped or not, I’m so glad I read it as I now have a much better understanding of my monthly cycle.

Great book for women seeking more knowledge about your body
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on September 6, 2018Verified Purchase
I bought this to gain as much insight about my body and understanding why, when and what my body does during my cycles. I've never known the intricacies, in fact I'm quite oblivious to what my body was doing and sometimes thought: 'is this normal?' Myself and my partner are now thinking about having a baby, and I'm a woman who needs to soak in as much as possible; this book provides me with the help I need once we decide to take that leap and start trying.
This kind of understanding should be more widely known, it's information that can greatly help those who are TTC and are having several issues (That may not be infertility related) and those wanting to avoid getting pregnant that are seeking an alternative if they have tried invasive methods of contraception, longing to try a more natural contraception.

Everyone should read this book

I have struggled for years with hormone pills. Why did my mother or sex education not teach me what's in this book? I genuinely feel cheated and patronised by the healthcare system. The knowledge in this book is invaluable. Every woman should read it. I use the method everyday for birth control. No more horrible synthetic hormones. Changed my life.

Only a third of the way in but just needed to write a review! This book is so interesting! So many things I’m learning, can’t believe there is so much about our bodies that we don’t know! Love how thick the book is, it’s like the fertility bible. Been ttc for 3 years now and just hoping a little more knowledge will help us get through this stressful time. Would recommend to all women ttc or want to know more about their body.

Excellent and Easy to Read!

I bought this book just for general information as I thought it was good to know and educate oneself on clockworks of the female reproductive system!
At the time, the husband and I were not yet planning on children. It was very useful to read however as there were certain key pieces of information that google cannot answer, but this book can. There is a chart within the book for you to photocopy and monitor your temperature and recognise the different phases.
I highly recommend this book to any woman who wants to learn about planned and unplanned pregnancies - the 'natural' way!
