In a small back alley in Tokyo, there is a café which has been serving carefully brewed coffee for more than one hundred years. But this coffee shop offers its customers a unique experience: the chance to travel back in time ...
From the author of Before the Coffee Gets Cold comes Tales from the Café, a story of four new customers each of whom is hoping to take advantage of Cafe Funiculi Funicula's time-travelling offer.
Among some faces that will be familiar to readers of Toshikazu Kawaguchi's previous novel, we will be introduced to:
The man who goes back to see his best friend who died 22 years ago
The son who was unable to attend his own mother's funeral
The man who travelled to see the girl who he could not marry
The old detective who never gave his wife that gift ...
This beautiful, simple tale tells the story of people who must face up to their past, in order to move on with their lives. Kawaguchi once again invites the reader to ask themselves: what would you change if you could travel back in time?

It was just as intriguing as its partner.
Excellent author: relatable characters; exciting, simple, impactful stories.
The ending of this book seemed like it would have been a good ending to the series, so I’m curious to see what will happen in the third book.
How did the book make me feel/think?
I needed this. We live in a topsy-turvy world. Depression and suffering are lurking on every corner. We often feel alone and as if we need to eat our emotions. We must remain strong, unflappable, and superhuman.
Are we doing life correctly?
Nobody knows.
I question my every step, breath, and decision.
Teardrops paint my shirt like bloodstains.
I hurt, I want the past to be just that, the past; it haunts me.
What if there was a place you could go to wash away your regrets and allow you to move forward with a fresh view and a bounce to your step?
Tales from the café by Toshikazu Kawaguchi (and the other books in this series) provide that escape. Only, it’s not an escape; it is a salve for the soul. Whether it is unrequited love or a decision you made that alters the course of life, Kawaguchi, with the utmost tenderness, delivers tears of joy as he helps us understand life is best lived and that the things that may haunt you the most are manageable.
When we find the strength to reflect, we might find warmth and understanding instead of the heavy burden of what if…

It is an interesting premise and has four tales of people who are willing to go back, who need to say or do something so that they can move on with their own lives. There is also an fascinating dynamic with the people who work in the cafe and their relationship with the “gift” they offer. The stories are bittersweet but moving. Four purrs and two paws up.

Okay, so this book is no match to the first release at all. It appears the novel was more to reveal who the woman in the chair is… Meh, I would have rather left it to my imagination, but it was nice knowing nonetheless.
So my main problem with this book is the repetitiveness and long winded explanations. Honestly, as I was reading it felt like the author was desperately attempting to hone in on some points. E.g, the rules of time travel was said probably close to 10 times( and that is a lot for a novella!). There were things I felt the author could have done without explaining. He just felt the need to explain and kept on going. urgh. The writing style felt different to that of the first one. It felt too forced. I must say though, the characters and their plights were not at all bad. The delivery however was what ruined if for me. Maybe the first novella would have sufficed. I find it annoying when an author's first release gains traction and they try to ride on the tailcoat but fail at doing so. Sometimes, it is best to leave things a mystery. Not everything deserves closure and I was perfectly fine with the mysteries of the first book. I think as soon as I saw the relationship tree at the beginning of the page I knew it was going to be a disaster. 1 star for effort but it's a no for me.
