The Gift: Hush Collection Audible Audiobook – Unabridged
What’s a desperate mother to do when her child suddenly disappears? Anything it takes to keep the family together in USA Today bestselling author Alison Gaylin’s short story with a sting.
It’s dreaded news for actress Lyla McCord and her husband, Nolan. Their eight-year-old daughter has vanished. To find her, Nolan reaches out to a psychic gifted with uncanny visions about the lost girl. But Lyla thinks she sees right through him. Is he a con artist or the real thing? Either way, he might be telling the truth. And that’s too frightening for Lyla to bear.
Alison Gaylin’s The Gift is part of Hush, a collection of six stories, ranging from political mysteries to psychological thrillers, in which deception can be a matter of life and death. Each piece can be read or listened to in one truly chilling sitting.

That was honestly my first impression after I finished this story of which I didn't have high hopes to begin with. Not only is it super short (ends on page 25 and location 370) but I had never heard of the author before either. Since I've read most of the other stories in this collection though I thought what the heck and gave it a shot. I'm very glad I did too because it was really much better and not at all what I was expecting.
To say this story is unpredictable is not a strong enough word. Shocking is a much better expression as well as dark. Yes it was rushed and I would have liked more insight into the characters, especially that of Lyla, but the surprises never seemed to stop. And though I wasn't a big fan of the ending, it seemed fitting if not exactly fair or just. There was truly never a boring moment however so if you've got a half hour I'd definitely recommend giving it a try =)
Audio Version: I originally tried reading this story while simultaneously listening to the audiobook. And while I liked the narrator, she was way too slow for me and I didn't want to waste 53 minutes so I gave it up. I know you can adjust the reading speed but the last time I did that it didn't sound right so I did not even attempt it again.
When the news comes that her young daughter is missing, everything gets turned upside down, as Lyla comes to grips with the flaws in her storybook life, while trying to find Fidelity, her daughter.
The author's storytelling suspense develops so smoothly and effortlessly, you're suddenly caught in the middle of Lyla's troubled circumstances, as she searches for her daughter. Eventually, a psychic becomes involved, testing Lyla's patience.
The 28 pages of this, the fifth Hush Collection installment, moves quickly to a satisfying yet uncomfortable ending. A great short reading distraction of Hitchcockian proportions. Wow!
Lots to think about afterwards. Disturbing but not traumatic.
Enjoyed the Audible supporting narration that added depth to my reading experience.
Love this series of short stories and hope Amazon sponsors another offering with such great authors. All so different in approach and so well written. This story deserves 4.5 stars.
