An inn is a place to rest, a place to talk and share stories, a place to find adventure, or a starting ground for quests and legends.
It is in this world, at least. To Erin Solstice, an inn seems like a medieval relic from the past. But here she is, running from Goblins and trying to survive in a world full of monsters and magic. She’d be more excited about all of this if everything wasn’t trying to kill her. But an inn is what she’s found, and so that’s what she becomes; an innkeeper, who serves drinks to heroes and monsters.
Actually, mostly monsters. But it’s a living, right?

I'm not a fan of video games, and I don't play chess. If you do, perhaps this whole storyline will make more sense to you. New characters were introduced to the plot with no attachment to the current story, and some were never revisited again in the entire book. I'm pretty sure those threads will be picked up again at some point.....? The initial write up I had read lead me to believe that the Inn its self would be a main character (as in some other stories I have read, re-read, and loved!) but so far, this has not been the case. The main character doesn't always treat other characters very nicely and while trying to maintain a strict "kill nothing" personal rule has no trouble going out and destroying a native species nest with no provocation. She doesn't always seem very smart, either. On her arrival she finally finds some "fruit" and instead of trying a bit and waiting (to see if she has a reaction or they are poisonous) she gorges herself on them....luckily for her with no ill effects. When she does get herself injured badly, someone always shows up with (we're told) a very expensive healing potion, which they use on her at great cost to themselves, and she thinks little to nothing of their sacrifice. And *Spoiler Alert* one of the main group of characters that we have been following aimlessly along through innumerable chapter switches, all get wiped out. And for what? Was there a reason, other than to make us (the reader) feel bad? For much of the story the character interactions seem aimless and pointless. But the storyline is inventive, and will probably resonate more with people who have some idea what "leveling up" really means, or who enjoys a good/detailed game of chess. Just don't expect the Inn to be anything more than a building!

I found this book as a recommendation. It has some really good concepts and loved the MCs.
I play video games and really loved the idea of levelling up as part of character development.
It was fairly well written and the world is well developed.
It was LONG - I was heavily invested in many of the characters... And then it happened...
I'm a bit torn... not sure if I will continue this series or not even though I love the MC Erin.
Spoilers...
If you like a happy ending DON'T Read this ! The last chapter saw over 75% of the characters killed! Had I known this I would not have read the book! I never read books or watch movies with tragic endings - so this would not have been a good choice for me.

Would have reviewed sooner but I wanted to read the next book right away. A great beginning to series. Five Star for no issues with the book.

I never thought that a book could hook me just with the hope that sometime later two people might meet.
There is a lot going on and it is a slow burn but it was really refreshing to see another take on a plot that I don't feel has been done before or if it has, not much.
I really enjoyed this!

What really sets this apart from other fantasy LitRPGs is the vulnerability that the protagonists can experience.
Erin is an [Innkeeper], she's not some fantastical warrior that can fling fireballs around and slay dragons. That means that when Erin does encounter monsters and hostile situations, she often has a creative way of handling the issues. She is weak, but not helpless. Naive, but not clueless.
The characterization and interaction between the protagonists and the world is interesting, and engaging. The side characters are interesting enough to be protagonists on their own, and the world it creates leaves you wanting for more.
There's no lack of excitement and blood pumping scenes either, all in all, a step above the rest.

To the author I read this book for free and bought the book because I had to give back for the experience.
To the reader this involves leveling mechanics and actually bothers to explain them. Also this series is a bit of a slow burn until it hits the fuse. Expect a few emotional gut punches and a huge cast as you dive deeper.
Pros: inventive storyline, large cast and world, a rainbow of emotional experiences, great world building and plot
Cons: the gutt punches can really knock the wind out of you (Tip never stop reading), the slice of life segments might through the standard fantasy and litrpg crowd for a loop

I started reading the serial on the website 3 weeks ago, I'm now working on volume 5... I can't stop reading this story. It's so engrossing that I catch myself laughing out loud, or swearing at the events of the book (which annoys the hell out of my wife).
I bought the e-book to easily read it again and help push the rest of the volumes. If this story were available in print, I'd buy it again in hard cover.
Thank you Pirateaba for creating this incredible world! I hope it continues for many years to come.

Rough start turns into addiction

When I started reading this I mocked it. I ripped the amateur writing to shreds, sending particularly juicily terrible quotes to a friend of mine.
- 2 hours of reading later I justified it because it was still funny
- 2 days later it because I was curious about the character interactions
- Months later I'm apparently addicted like a diabetic person to insulin
The actual wording is feels amateur sometimes, but then someone like Magnolia opens her mouth and it's so very well done. Don't read if you're looking for a world shaking epic with a tight plot. Read if you want something light, with lots and lots of words and slow character development.
I think pirateaba has a grand vision for this story. It's subtle and there's a lot of slice of life day to day over it, but I swear I sometimes see glimpses of something vast stirring in the depths. Looking forward to seeing what comes of magic, true magic and dead gods.

Fun, energetic and full of badassery
Reviewed in the United Kingdom 🇬🇧 on August 11, 2018Verified Purchase
I have really high standards when it comes to the technical aspects of a book. To misquote a friend of mine: "My standards are higher than your heels." I need tight plots, solid structure and a mastery of language that Tolkien would approve of.
The Wandering Inn has little of this.
Many of the characters are caricatures, the plot is all over the place—is this a slice of life story, a sword and sorcery adventure, or an epic save the world? It's all of these things, in a winding, twisting plot that drags its feet over half a dozen colossal continents. The writing is—if you'll forgive my unkindness—at the level I expect from fanfiction.
Despite all that, I LOVE this story. It has carved a place in my heart.
When I first discovered it, I was glued to my laptop for 4 days straight. My flatmate thought I had had a mental health breakdown, because I hadn't left my room in all that time. I was weak from hunger and a lack of sleep. I was addicted.
There is something vibrant about this work. It hums with energy. It is fun. The author had fun writing this, you can feel it, because the story communicates that fun to the reader in a way a thousand Shakespeares would struggle to match, thees and thous notwithstanding.
This is a powerful story about teenagers and young adults trapped in a world made stagnant by its own magic, and how their ideas, beliefs and actions shape a shift in cultural thought. From a humble (if bossy) innkeeper to adventurers and heroes, from savage (yet bright) goblins to kings and warlords, this is a tale about the change a single person can make in a world that resists change.
The characters are active, always doing something, always impacting a world that evolves around them. The world is fascinating, and unique, with dozens of races and cultures. The lore is rich and deep, with a history that matters. Everything is badass—including chess. Especially the chess.
It has one of the best PoV's of a drone in a hivemind I have ever read. And by one, I mean several. I relish the Antium chapters. There is an entire chapter where a group of goblins hold an entire conversation solely through body language. I keep going back to that chapter, because as an amateur writer myself, there is so much to learn from it. I am in awe of this work, and I've unashamedly looted ideas from this for my own writing.
It's bright, inventive and surprisingly original in a genre (portal fantasy) that grew tired and cliche decades ago. It slides Litrpg mechanics into the world, its cultures and the plot in a way that makes it feel natural, without clunking up the story with endless numbers and stats like most Litrpgs.
As far as I am concerned, this is the peak of the portal fantasy/Litrpg genre.

An excellent character focused story
Reviewed in the United Kingdom 🇬🇧 on August 28, 2018Verified Purchase
I've been going though quite a litrpg binge recently, and a lot of them are good, but quite similar. Male power fantasies, with reasonably flat female characters.
This story shines from the start. It's characters of both sexes feel real, driven, with real issues.
Normally for most of my reviews, I have commented that the book would be good for litrpg fans. While there are litrpg elements here, they are light, and in some cases totally overruled by the characters themselves!
I would have to say this book is a must read for any fantasy fan.
Excellent. Go buy it now.

Surprisingly funny and well thought through!

This is a long one with two main characters with very different personalities. I think it is very interesting the love and companionship that Erin brings about to the isolation that Ryoka has inside her. Being dragged from one world to the next and finding yourself with a system you don't want and can't control is disorientating for most but it was so nice to find such strong women as protagonists even in the space of a world that is so beyond their normal. They are not perfect, far from it, yet they grow in their own ways. Slowly I was drawn in deeper and felt for the characters even to the point of getting frustrated and sad when things kept on going wrong. I am very much looking forward to reading the next book even if it yanks at the heart strings more. A lot of characters so look forward to chaos.

Didn't know what to think at first, just heard so much hype about this book and thought why not give it a shot? Glad I did! It starts off slow but gets better and better, the characters are well rounded and you feel every moment - excellent writing!
My last point is on the integrity of the author - they offer the whole book for free online and encourage you to go read it there instead of buying the book.. First time I've ever seen that! Brought it on my kindle anyway because I like reading on it and also want to do my bit to support good authors and the time they put into writing amazing stories ❤️ please continue to write your amazing book!
