UPDATE: Drive failing after 6 months. Reallocated sectors. ORG: Great value. WEAK 2 year warranty.

UPDATE: Six months into owning this drive, CrystalDisk Info throws up a caution warning showing eight reallocated sectors, meaning eight individual 512KB areas of the disk where read/write errors were discovered and had to be reallocated to another area of the disk. This results in slower disk performance and is an early warning of premature disk failure. There is a reason why before I posted my original review 6 months ago about Toshiba not listing the MTTB hourly average rating of disk failuer for these disks, that Toshiba later updated the product ad to list the MTTB finally at 600,000. That's about half of what a Seagate drive is rated for. Now, I have to buy another 6TB drive to copy my files to first before I can RMA this drive. BE AWARE TOSHIBA X300 drives have POOR RELIABILITY. Only buy on deep sale discounts. Down grading my overall rating from 4 stars to 2 stars.

ORIGINAL REVIEW: I bought this during an Amazon sale for $135 CAD, which was unbeatable for a 6TB, 7200 RPM hard drive with 128MB cache. Be aware though, this hard drive only comes with TWO YEARS OF WARRANTY. A Seagate Barracuda drive has five years warranty for comparison. Also, Toshiba does not list the MTBF hour rating for this drive. Consumers have no idea how many hours this hard drive is rated to operate at. Other drive manufacturers state this as part of the product's specifications. This drive gets 2 out of 5 stars for weak two year warranty. Buy this drive when on sale, asking yourself, if this drive fails in two years, was the cost to buy it cheaper than a similar drive with a 3/4/5 year warranty? At $135 CAD plus tax, it was the better buy over the five year warranty Seagate 6TB drive.

Toshiba Warranty scam

The item was great until it malfunctioned. I thought it was a motherboard issue and ended up building a new rig Yay! I discovered the Toshiba HD malfunctioned and was the cause. I went to the Toshiba website under warranty section. Entered the serial number and information as instructed. Packaged as instructed. I paid $20 to ship to the Toshiba Ontario facility. The tracking was complete. Two weeks later I contacted Toshiba and they asked for the tracking number gave the TN, they responded I had to ship to TX ? I replied it was not in the instructions to send to that address on their website. They kept asking for tracking and proof of purchase. I had already sent pictures and proofs already, and re-sent. They sent a response they changed the RMA number and keep checking for the money and might be in the spam folder. No money sent, month later, asked for the name and contact information for a manager. The wty people asked for tracking number like its a bot response?? Two months no response. The warranty is a scam! Wasted my time and money.

J'ai acheté ce disque pour sa haute performance et c'est épouvantable. Je voulais qu'ils soit mon disque principal. J'avais aussi besoin d'un disque de relève moins performant et j'ai donc acheté un Seagate BarraCuda 8tB 5400 RPM pour cette fonction. Il s'avère que le Seagate qui tourne seulement à 5400 est tellement plus rapide. Si je copie du Toshiba vers le Seagate le Seagate monte à peine à 40% tandis que le Toshiba est à 100% dans le tapis. Pourtant l'écriture est plus lente que la lecture mais ce Toshiba est plus lent en lecture que le disque le plus bas de gamme que j'ai trouvé et en écriture. Je l'ai essayé dans deux ordinateurs différents avec des carte-mères ASUS et MSI. Des gros systèmes et le résultat est le même. Mon ordinateur principal est un MSI MEG X399 Cretion avec Threadripper 64 coeurs 128 Go de mémoire.
J'aurais tellement voulu le retourner. Toutefois on ne constate sa lenteur qu'un coup qu'il est plein et le remplir m'a pris un mois car c'était des trucs spécialisés venant du web.
Je suis pris avec et j'ai payé le gros prix.

I took a leap of faith and bought the 8TB in 2019, what gave me confidence was the customer feedback and 2-year warranty. For the majority of the period, I was satisfied. That changed when the drive inexplicably and suddenly dies a handful of weeks before the warranty expired. I started the warranty process, and now 6 months later, still dealing with e-mail exchanges and I don't feel closer to a resolution. Like one other customer shared, for the warranty they will tell you that you must mail it somewhere in Ontario. Which I did with tracking (note: you have to pay for your own shipping). I confirmed it arrived and patiently waited. Several weeks passed by without notice so I e-mailed them back, and they said they did not receive it. I shared the tracking number, and then they said that they need it to arrive in Texas. Every time I've checked I get the same answer.

I will continue to follow-up and I have requested Amazon's support to help get this resolved.

My only regret is that I bought 4 more Toshiba 8TB drives before this situation had started, and worrying this might happen again in a few months.

Fast but very loud.

The drive is pretty fast (faster than my 8TB Seagate) but it's very loud. I haven't had a drive this loud since I my 10GB (yes that's gigabyte) Maxtor 7200rpm. It's like going back to the year 2000 for how noisy it is. Anyway, I was using it as a game drive but ended up falling back to my 3TB Toshiba (from 2014) and picking up a 256GB NVMe drive to run with StoreMI. Now I have more speed for the games I'm actively playing and none of the noise. I'm using the 8TB as my backup drive now because it's pretty quiet on the sequential reads and writes but man but as soon as you have a situation where it's doing random reads or writes it's thumping away like a jack hammer (of course I'm exaggerating).

Pros:
- Fast, can sustain up to 210MB/s transfer speeds.
- Was great value for the money on the Amazon Prime sale
- Lot's of storage space

Cons:
- LOUD!!!
- Short 2 Year Warranty, combined with the noise makes me question it's longevity

The drive was easy to install and the status was healthy in Windows Disk management.
After an hour of use the drive started making a grinding noise. The drive no longer appeared in File Explorer or Disk management.
Amazon's return policy is disappointing to put it mildly. I don't drive, so I've got to walk two miles to a UPS pick up point or return at my own cost.
