The True Bastards: A Novel Audible Audiobook – Unabridged
Half orc. All badass. A female chieftain in a brutal wasteland society fights to take what is hers in an action-packed, foul-mouthed fantasy adventure from the author of The Grey Bastards.
“Nonstop action, though not for faint hearts.” (The Wall Street Journal)
Fetching was once the only female rider in the Lot Lands. Now she is the proud leader of her own hoof, a band of loyal half-orcs sworn to her command.
But in the year since she became chief, the Lots have tested her strength to the breaking point. The Bastards are scattered, desperate, their ranks weakened by a mysterious famine, their fortress reduced to smoldering slag. And their troubles are only growing. A pack of ravening beasts circles their camp, while grasping human nobles hatch a plan that will shift the balance of power in the Lots.
Fetch and her comrades are still standing defiant - they’re Bastards, after all - but even the toughest half-orc can take only so much; and Fetch knows they’re on the verge of ruin.
As she strives to lead her hoof to safety and unravel the plots set against them, Fetching must journey through forbidden elven lands, overcome long-standing hatreds, battle a monstrous wizard of terrifying power - and, worst of all, delve into the dark truths of her own existence.
She’s no stranger to fighting the world, but on this journey, sharp steel and a strong hog won’t be enough. To survive these trials, she’ll have to defy not just her foes but the very nature of the Lots.
The True Bastards is the sweeping, ambitious second entry in the Lot Lands series, an irresistibly thrilling, gritty, foul-mouthed adventure that deepens, expands - and again upends - the Bastards’ unforgettable world.
Praise for The True Bastards
"[An] action-packed sequel...the story is filled with relentless action and powered by a cast of adeptly developed and emotionally appealing characters.... Fans will be overjoyed not only with the return of some beloved characters, but also with the novel's conclusion, which sets up the storyline for a much larger adventure to come. Imagine an outlaw biker gang of half-orcs riding giant war pigs and you've captured this saga's gloriously dirty soul." (Kirkus Reviews, starred review)

This is gritty heroic fantasy think David gemmell if your old school with a bit of a riff on classic Tolkien as well, wizards elves and orcs are all thrown in but with more modern story telling and sensesablities if your looking for a more modern example then I would say if you liked Evan Winters rage of dragons another indie success story that got a publishing contract out it then I think you will find lots to love here.
Set in a fantasy world the story revolves around half orcs the by product of rape, usually, of human women or more rarely elves by pure blood orcs ostracised by the races of man and elves the half orcs form hooves a mounted band of cavalry riding gargantuan hogs, patrolling the lot lands a hostile desolate wilderness fighting constants battles agaisnt men and Orcs.
Still fighting the fall out from the previous book with the Grey Bastards, now the True bastards, reduced in numbers and with those that are left are scattered, while the protagonist of the first book was Jackal this follows Fetch hoofmate ,friend lover and now leader of the True bastards drowning under the weight of leadership and struggling with the poisonous legacy left by an enemy. While I won’t go into much plot detail to avoid spoiling I found this much stronger novel then the first book it makes much more of the relationships between the hoofs and individual characters and while there are many twists in this story , the same as the grey bastards, I found them much better done in this book more natural whether that’s the author honing his craft or simply having the benefits of having a editor and a team behind him for the second book I couldn’t say. What I can say this is a book will worth your time and effort and a fantastic follow up to a great first book.
Given the couple of years since the Grey Bastards, I really, really could have done with a summary/re-cap because a lot happened. A lot. Would also have quite liked a map as there is quite a bit of travel around the “Lot Lands”.
Anyway, the (now re-named) True Bastards are a small bunch of half-orcs patrolling their bit of the Lot Lands from intruders such as the beastly centaurs or full orcs. The gang are in disarray as a result of the end of their previous adventure and now female Fetching is in charge of “the Hoof” but supplies are low and so are their numbers. As she tests her leadership the Hoof may do well to survive and it appears that old enemies have survived and there are plans for the Lot Lands.
It’s really good. Fantastic characters, thoughtful plotting and some really interesting ideas. This is proper fantasy and very enjoyable indeed.
