This book is wonderfully put together, so happy I got it! It has fun meal themes for different times of the year and a bunch of recipes I never would have considered to pack as a lunch for my kid. We took them for a practice run before my daughter starts Kindergarten and shes totally devoured most of them! Even has suggestions on meal plans and side notes on things like portion sizes and lunch containers.

3.5 Stars...
Author of the popular blog, "Vegan Lunch Box," Jennifer McCann has packed her debut cookbook with recipes, anecdotes and information to help readers assemble balanced, tasty lunches free of animal products. Though not without its flaws, the book makes vegan meals look appealing and relatively straightforward.
The first part of the book provides a host of menu suggestions and the second contains the actual recipes. McCann organizes the chapters into: Quick and Easy (sandwiches, dips); Rise and Shine (biscuits, muffins); Ready and Waiting (soups, pizza); Lunch Box Advenure (samosas, sushi). Specific recipes include veggie burgers, coconut-carrot rice pudding and PBJ muffins. Though at times McCann relies on processed veggie meats and "fake" cheeses, she certainly advocates for cooking from scratch when time allows. She also describes how to pack lunches in fun, colourful bento boxes, which allows for lots of choice and minimal waste.
Unfortunately, the book contains no pictures save for a few page insert at the book's centre. The index also falls short; if you don't know the exact name of the recipe you want, you're better off flipping through the entire book than searching the index! But, ultimately, the book recommends itself. McCann's writing engages and inspires her readers with scattered tidbits like: "How much to Pack," "Fitting In [for vegan kids]," "Let's Hear It for Legumes" and "And then, a miracle occurred . . . " (about the momentous event of McCann's son eating his first salad). A solid choice for vegans or anyone trying to eat more meat-free meals.

I love the cream cheese herb rolls, and the mini wellingtons, which I have adapted to make vegan sausage rolls that are really good. There's also some good ethiopian recipes including one for injera. I would definitely recommend this cookbook, not just for kids lunches, but for adult dinners (I don't have any kids).

The first chapter scared me as all of the recipes called for faux premade foods and I thought I had made a terrible mistake ordering the book. The following chapters have some better ideas but its still pretty basic. If you already have a collection of vegan cookbooks I would advise against this one

Better than expected

I've been looking at this book for quite a while but had heard various feedback and was unsure about buying it, so when I finally got around to it I wasn't sure what to expect. I'd been struggling with lunch ideas and really needed some help!
In the end I'm really glad I brought this, it is very much aimed at children but most of the ideas and lunch menus are easily transferable. I'd say I'd use about half the ideas in the book which isn't bad going really. Really adds some variety to lunchtimes, is just ashame as an advocate of vegan diets the author no longer seems to be vegan.
