Kathy Freston wasn't born a vegan. The bestselling author and renowned wellness expert actually grew up on chicken-fried steak and cheesy grits, and loved nothing more than BBQ ribs and vanilla milkshakes. Not until her thirties did she embrace the lifestyle of a veganist--someone who eats a plant-based diet not just for their own personal well-being, but for the whole web of benefits it brings to our ecosystem and beyond. Kathy's shift toward this new life was gradual--she leaned into it--but the impact was profound. Now Kathy shows us how to lean into the veganist life. Effortless weight loss, reversal of disease, environmental responsibility, spiritual awakening--these are just a few of the ten profound changes that can be achieved through a gentle switch in food choices.
Filled with compelling facts, stories of people who have improved their weight and health conditions as a result of making the switch, and Q&As with the leading medical researchers, Veganist concludes with a step-by-step practical guide to becoming a veganist…easily and gradually. It is an accessible, optimistic, and illuminating book that will change the way you eat forever. No less delicious, still hearty and satisfying--just better for you and for all.

I took this book out of my local library and enjoyed it so much I purhased a copy. I've been putting my toe in the water of the vegan lifestyle for a couple of years now. I found the book informative, presenting good arguments to support vegan choices. The author isn't preaching, but instead encourages everyone to make changes to lean towards veganism. I'd recommend the book to anyone who is trying to eat ethically.

My friend enjoyed reading it. But, when I bought it, I thought it was the larger book and had recipes. My bad - will read description more carefully. Maybe that's why the price was so good.

Maybe I was expecting more from this book, but I did not learn much and I was not impressed. However I have read a lot of books on similar issues so maybe it's suitable for a beginner trying to grab this way of living and eating

This is an excellent book for a newbie who is dabbling in Veganism. Very informative, thought provoking and enlightening! I would highly recommend this book as a "first read" if you are new to the Vegan way of life.

This book should be on every homes book shelfReviewed in the United Kingdom 🇬🇧 on September 6, 2015
One of the few books I have read from cover to cover. Although I am not a 100% vegan, I do lean towards vegetarian with an occassional slip of eating chicken / turkey a few time a year, the overall message in this book is sound. I purchased this book (and other vegan cookery books) to see if I could understand where I was going wrong with my increasing weight and failing diets. Although I only had 10lb to lose I was getting nowhere despite trying to be 'good' for 3 months. I eventually chucked out all the so called low fat and slimming food products in my kitchen and switched to a vegan diet (I also cut out gluten and refined sugar) three weeks ago and have already lost 7lb without really trying too hard. Low fat products often contain extra sugar. I recommended this book to help you understand the issues surrounding highly processed food we eat on a day to day basis. I would recommend however that if dieting is the focus on buying the book, readers also buy a few 'basic' vegan cookbooks that cater for day to day inexpensive and sensible meals and also find yourself some good 'go to' veggie burger recepies that you can make and freeze. I had no intention whatsoever to rush out and buy seitan or tofu.

Not entirely convincedReviewed in the United Kingdom 🇬🇧 on August 28, 2014
Received the book and was surprised that it was so small. The content was well presented but feel that the practical implications of changing to a vegan diet were not addressed in much detail. The losing weight section was a disappointment as I felt that it had no foundation. However I did like the way Kathy presented the facts but felt that some of the information was put in without references to where she had found them making it hard for me to believe.
was really disappointed with this bookReviewed in the United Kingdom 🇬🇧 on April 30, 2016
was really disappointed with this book. it had good information but it repeated itself a lot. I was even more surprised when there were no recipies just a shopping menu. a lot of people can't afford a lot of what was in those menu's. if I knew it was like this I wouldn't have bothered.
Great book, made my journey to lean into veganism ...Reviewed in the United Kingdom 🇬🇧 on September 2, 2016
This book and the interviews I watched from the author on youtube changed my life. I was doing a lot of research on diets and she nailed it... looking for a compassionate diet was what she was looking for, this resonated with me. Great book, made my journey to lean into veganism an empowering one.
