I took this book out of my local library and enjoyed it so much I purhased a copy. I've been putting my toe in the water of the vegan lifestyle for a couple of years now. I found the book informative, presenting good arguments to support vegan choices. The author isn't preaching, but instead encourages everyone to make changes to lean towards veganism. I'd recommend the book to anyone who is trying to eat ethically.

Maybe I was expecting more from this book, but I did not learn much and I was not impressed. However I have read a lot of books on similar issues so maybe it's suitable for a beginner trying to grab this way of living and eating

My friend enjoyed reading it. But, when I bought it, I thought it was the larger book and had recipes. My bad - will read description more carefully. Maybe that's why the price was so good.

This is an excellent book for a newbie who is dabbling in Veganism. Very informative, thought provoking and enlightening! I would highly recommend this book as a "first read" if you are new to the Vegan way of life.

The Veganist evangelizes all the reasons to go vegan: lose weight; minimize your risks or prevent cancer, heart disease, diabetes, Alzheimer's, melanoma; save money; help the environment as well as stand against the horrible consequences and cruelty of todays factory industrial farming that have exploded exponentially in the hands of a few the past 30 years. It is not the family farm that people my age grew up with.

This book supports everything I've read in the past and more. It also backs up its claims with support from the American Dietetic Association, Dean Ornish and others.

Some of the facts are mind boggling:

14 billion tons of animal excrement per year. Water used for livestock. 240 trillion gallons per day. enough for every human being to take eight showers per day. 40 billion tons of soil erosion per year. Livestock sector is responsible for 19% of greenhouse gas emissions. 90% of Amazon deforestation due to raising animals.

It goes on and on. In a time of dwindling resources and population growth these are huge issues.

On a personal note, since I've lived this lifestyle imperfectly, I feel better physically. I feel happier, less moody, more alert.... I've also been very concerned about skin cancer and my diet perhaps has cleared up my areas of concern. However, I did not lose weight. I gained weight. Perhaps, as my doctor suggested, I wasn't getting enough protein and my body was storing up fat.

5.0 out of 5 stars This book should be on every homes book shelf

One of the few books I have read from cover to cover. Although I am not a 100% vegan, I do lean towards vegetarian with an occassional slip of eating chicken / turkey a few time a year, the overall message in this book is sound. I purchased this book (and other vegan cookery books) to see if I could understand where I was going wrong with my increasing weight and failing diets. Although I only had 10lb to lose I was getting nowhere despite trying to be 'good' for 3 months. I eventually chucked out all the so called low fat and slimming food products in my kitchen and switched to a vegan diet (I also cut out gluten and refined sugar) three weeks ago and have already lost 7lb without really trying too hard. Low fat products often contain extra sugar. I recommended this book to help you understand the issues surrounding highly processed food we eat on a day to day basis. I would recommend however that if dieting is the focus on buying the book, readers also buy a few 'basic' vegan cookbooks that cater for day to day inexpensive and sensible meals and also find yourself some good 'go to' veggie burger recepies that you can make and freeze. I had no intention whatsoever to rush out and buy seitan or tofu.

Not earth shattering, not a lot of new information if you're already up to date, BUT this is a great resource for people who are exploring vegan eating for the first time. Sure you can find a lot of this stuff for free on the internet. It's better, for me anyway, to have it all located in one place and not have to pull info from everywhere on the net. Plus, there are answers to questions I wouldn't have thought to even ask - especially about viruses. No, there are no recipes, this isn't a cookbook - it's a book about a lifestyle change. The only personal issue I have with this book is that it promotes processed vegan/vegetarian foods - but, having frozen or prepared food is something that many Americans already have, so it does fit in with the "lean-in" option that the book emphasizes. Though I will point out that some of the prepared foods are NOT vegan, they are vegetarian. Read labels carefully, friends. I have already recommended this book to some people because overall it does present and promote a healthier lifestyle.
