The Emperor’s vision of mankind ascendant lies in tatters. The Great Crusade is naught but a fading memory. The dream of Unity is no more. But with Horus’s rebellion spreading to every corner of the Imperium and war engulfing new worlds and systems almost daily, there are some who now ask: were the signs there to be seen all along? In these dark times, only one thing is certain – the galaxy will never know peace again, not in this lifetime or a thousand others... This Horus Heresy anthology contains twenty-one short stories by David Annandale, Aaron Dembski-Bowden, Gav Thorpe, Chris Wraight, Guy Haley, James Swallow, Nick Kyme, Rob Sanders, John French, Andy Smillie and Graham McNeill.

The stories do have however a common characteristic. They are all “teasers” in one way or another. In some cases, they prolong events and books written by the same author, such as the story continuing Nemesis with a further attempt on Horus’ life by an imperial Assassin.
In other cases, they show glimpses of Horus’ continuing offensive and drive towards Terra, but without actually depicting the events and battles. This is for instance the case of Graham McNeill’s two short stories (the first and the last of the collection) which take place just before and just after the fall of the Imperial world of Molech, of its leading family House Devine, and its armoured (and rather superb) Knights.
As the fans of the series will find out, numerous characters present in previous Horus Heresy titles pop up again in various stories, starting with quite a few of the Primarchs. Two of my favorite stories were those featuring Angron and Mortarion, their sufferings and their respective doubts.
This is understandable to some extent, but also a bit annoying at times, because the reader may get the impression that Black Library is once again spinning things out as much as possible. While this collection may be made up of “teasers”, these are nevertheless sufficiently good (and some are more than good!) to whet readers’ appetites and just about enough to keep patient and wait for the three or four next titles that these stories seem to herald rather well. Four stars.

This and most imminent releases probably best buying second hand as there will doubtless be plenty available.
