5.0 out of 5 starsGreat choice if you need high capacity / performance without paying SSD prices

UPDATE: Nov 19 2019 - 3 months in, running great, still fast, zero problems.
UPDATE 2: Nov 2020 - 15 months in and is still running perfect. No probs.

This review is for the 6 TB WD Black WD6003FZBX-00K5WB0

I'm using several WD Blacks in my current system, including:

2 TB WD Black WD2003FZEX-00Z4SA0
3 TB WD Black WD3003FZEX-00Z4SA0
5 TB WD Black WD5001FZWX-00ZHUA0

and now this new 6 TB WD Black WD6003FZBX-00K5WB0

After installing the drive in my desktop PC, I initialized GPT and formatted NTFS in Win 10 Pro 1903. The binary / base 10 conversion left 5.45 TB usable, which is what I was expecting. I don't like to fill HDD's past 90 - 95 % capacity for overhead / drive optimization purposes, so I consider this roughly just over 5 TB's of usable drive. I knew this going in - no surprises there.

I was concerned pre-purchase by several consumer complaints (mostly 2017 / 2018) about excessive noise and grinding. I'm really baffled by this. For me this 6 TB is the quietest and fastest of the WD Black drives I own, with the 3 TB WD Black WD3003FZEX-00Z4SA0 being easily the loudest, and the 5 TB WD Black WD5001FZWX-00ZHUA0 being the second loudest. I can only guess that WD may have previously had a bad batch ? or they have refined the manufacture process to eliminate previous problems? I say that because this 6 TB WD Black shows a manufacture date of Dec 6 2018, so it could be a newer manufacture process. And putting it through it's paces in benches and real world tests it is not as loud as my other black drives.

In addition to the attached drive transfer speed pictures, the drive will reach burst transfer speeds in excess of 1 to 1.5 GB/s maintained for a few seconds, monitored in Win 10 Pro 1903. The average sustained transfer speed, now that the drive is 60 % full, tends to be anywhere form 155 - 170 MB/s. That's a rough average and is dependent on transfer source size, what else is being used, etc. Note the attached screenshots show benches at 0 % and 59 % full, showing some speed drop off - that's normal as the drive fills up, but it's still excellent performance for an HDD. These are not SSD speeds, but neither is this a 6TB SSD price. The price / performance here is a sweet spot for high capacity / performance uses like a video editing source content drive, or similar scenarios where this is a companion drive to an O/S and program SSD.

As the drive is less than a month old I can't comment on longevity but I'll update and report back if I find any problems. This drive has the standard 5 yr warranty offered on all WD black drives.

This drive runs a few degrees Celsius higher than my other WD Blacks but it's still well within spec. Under prolonged load it tends to run high 30's - while the others are mid 30's. This is in an airflow optimized Fractal Design R5 case with additional 140 mm Noctua fans cooling the well spaced drive stack.

I do a considerable amount of editing and this drive holds a lot of my footage. I'm using Win 10 Pro and Sony Vegas installed on a 500 GB Samsung 970 EVO NVMe. I have 20 + TB of data spread across two desktop systems and archival backup boxes. That said I'm still a hobby editor and for me it's still just not feasible to spend the thousands of dollars it would cost to switch 20 TB over to SSD's. But I am seriously considering buying two more of these because the real world performance is excellent - better than I expected actually. I wish they were cheaper, but in Canada it tends to normally run within $10 - $20 of it's closest rival, the 6 TB Pro 7200 rpm offering from the other guys at ***gate.

The system I'm testing with:
i9 9900K
64 GB DDR4
Gigabyte Z390 Master mobo
MSI GTX 1080
750 W Gold PSU
4 x 7200 rpm HDD's
1 x 5400 rpm HDD
Win 10 Pro and programs on a 500 GB Samsung 970 EVO NVMe

10 / 10 would buy this drive again.

3.0 out of 5 starsOverall good but be sure to test it out when you first get it
Reviewed in Canada on January 1, 2020
Have bought several WD Black drives over the years. One 2TB lasted 9 years. Another 1.5TB is 10 yrs old and still going. Have 5TB drive that has been stable. Others too. I trust them far more than Seagate and others.

BUT I bought 2 of these 6TB drives. I tested both extensively (FULL multi-pass read and write of entire drive, all sectors). One is showing signs of weakness right out of the box, with intermittent trouble reading a couple of sectors (getting replaced via Amazon).

Note that no manufacturer fully test drives before being sent out, so there can always be bad ones out there. Small number will fail early, so get a good drive tester to perform FULL multi-pass surface scan (can take a couple of days to run). Glad I did before committing my data to it.

2.0 out of 5 stars Very disappointing!
Reviewed in Canada on June 26, 2019
Capacity : 6TBStyle: 256 MB CacheVerified Purchase
I always liked Western Digital products, I own several 1TWD HDs and SSDs too bad they max out at 2T. A 4T or 6T would be better, especially if you take a lot of images and have over 720,000 to back up. I bought this 6T hard drive to use as an external back-up. However, due to the external housing which had a defective switch, once I back up and when I tried to turn it off it refused, the only way I could turn it off is by unplugging the current to the drive. Which turned out to be not a good thing. Because when I started it up later on, it showed that there is nothing on the drive. After using a recovery software, I was able to recover most of the files but they got scrambled all over the place.

However, that was not such a complete disaster, since I had all my files on other hard drives, but the real disaster was that the drive was making all kinds of grinding and popping sounds -- it sounded like a popcorn making machine! Even my 6 year old WD 1T drive did not make those noises. Good grief!!! Time to contact Amazon and have the unit exchanged. Another 5 days of loading up files and sorting things out for a backup once I received the new drive was wasted due to a not so reliable WD drive. Therefore I can't really recommend this product after such event. Buyer beware!

1.0 out of 5 stars Can't confirm if it's actually the "black" model

Arrived not looking much like the picture advertised. Guess that's just concept art. Anyway, I tried to compare similar models online to this one as I've received numerous fake electronics through Amazon over the years. The aesthetics did look different from some but I went ahead anyway and installed the drive. Used Crystal Disk to check the drive performance and info. Came back with model #WDC WD60EZRX-00MVLB1 which to no surprise appears to be associated with a WD Green Drive. After checking the RPM's as well, again no surprise that it came back at 5400 RPM. Used several 3rd party apps and the model was still confirmed as #WDC WD60EZRX-00MVLB1 despite it being listed on the sticker as WD6003FZBX.

Returned immediately and buying from Canada Computers for the same price.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wicked Fast, Great for Video Editing, also great storage capacity. Installs easily in Win 7 64 Bit
Reviewed in Canada on May 31, 2021
Capacity : 6TBStyle: 256 MB CacheVerified Purchase
What's not to like? I wanted one 6TB partition which was easily created as a single GPT partition.
Drive is so fast, the speed is limited only by the system maximum transfer speed, not the drive.
Obviously easy to install and configure as a single logical drive partition, for anyone with basic computer installation skills.
I always buy WD Blue for the rock-solid reliability and performance, but needed more speed for video editing, so thought I would move up to this WD Black and am not disappointed.
As a bonus the price is very competitive with any other Vendor out there.

I was worried by some bad review on almost all mechanical hard drive in the last couple years but I did not have any problem at all. This drive has been working great for the last 2 month. I always had a great experience with WD Black drive and over the last 12 years with over 20 of those drive only one broke during the 5 year warranty and I got a replacement. No data lost I was able to backup before complete failure.

A mechanical drive this fast with 6TB of space and a 5 years warranty was exactly what I was looking for.

Undetailed comments: I like the speed and storage offered by this 6 TB HDD. As an experienced PC layman, I only expect to update this review in case of dire disaster, which statistically is not very probable.

I only wish that its capacity could expand magically to accommodate my ever-expanding data pile! Also, I wish that I had read more closely the technical terms and conditions of DropBox usage, as these require a target drive to be formatted in NTFS format and not exFAT as I had done.

This hard drive is being used in my 2008 Mac Pro to house all of my video footage and projects. Love the capacity for the price and it has helped with the processing speed of the video editing. It is a bit louder than my other drives (there are a total of 4 drives in my case) but I've gotten use to it over the past 2 or so months.
Western Digital is a great company and makes a good product.

I bought and received WESTERN DIGITAL Black 6TB Performance Desktop Hard Drive, 7200 RPM SATA 6Gb/s 256MB Cache 3.5 Inch, WD6003FZBX. It's a great hard drive. It's very silent and pretty fast compared to my seagate 4 gig hhd. I installed Manjaro 17.1.12 and it boots in 20 seconds. I'm very happy with it. You get what you pay for. Yes I can buy the 8 tb seagate hdd for $272.00 but it's a 5400 rpm and the Western digital is 7200 rpm and I don't care what people say it does make a difference.

Buyer beware before buying from "Warehouse Deals".
