This is a moving, heartfelt book about growing up, grief, and changing perspectives. It's a contemporary set in the northwestern US, but brings in fantasy elements and Korean folk tales. My kid loved it and so did I.

This book felt like it was trying too hard, the characters, plot and solution felt off and too vague. The dialogs felt too adult for the young characters but at the same time their attitude and actions were too childish.
I didn't like the imagined tiger scenes. I felt they created a promise they never delivered on.

All in all I didn't enjoy this read and didn't feel it was told in a way that will make it interesting or enjoyable for the targeted age group.

I'm afraid this book received an award mostly because of the Korean background of the characters, but that in itself wasn't enough to make it the great read I hoped for.

The book was in very good condition. My low rating is for the contents of the last chapter. It is not kids appropriate. The author had to ruin what would be an otherwise good book by forcing an adult situation in a children’s novel.

Unfortunately I didn’t read the reviews for this book. I merely saw that it had nearly 5 stars and that it was for young readers. As other reviewers have said though the last chapter makes this book completely inappropriate for children. Two girls who had been friends throughout the book were finally understood to be lesbians by the main character of the book. It describes the girls snuggling and kissing. My daughter was quite upset and it ruined the whole book for her.
