Purchase options and add-ons
From the creative team behind the bestselling Finding Winnie, winner of the Caldecott Medal, comes an extraordinary wartime adventure seen through the eyes of the world’s most beloved bear
Here is a heartwarming reimagining of the real journey undertaken by the extraordinary bear who inspired Winnie-the-Pooh. Follow Winnie’s war adventure—from her early days with her mother in the Canadian forest, to her remarkable travels with the Veterinary Corps across the country and overseas, and all the way to the London Zoo, where she met Christopher Robin Milne and inspired the creation of the world’s most famous bear.
This beautifully told story is a triumphant blending of deep research and magnificent imagination. Infused with Sophie Blackall’s irresistible renderings of an endearing bear, the book is also woven through with entries from Captain Harry Colebourn’s real wartime diaries and contains a selection of artifacts from the Colebourn family archives. The result is a one-of-a-kind exploration into the realities of war, the meaning of courage and the indelible power of friendship, all told through the historic adventures of one extraordinary bear.

BASED ON THE TRUE STORY OF THE WORLD’S MOST FAMOUS BEAR
Even as a cub, there was something special about that bear. She longed to climb higher than any bear had ever gone. She wasn’t afraid to ask a squirrel for help. She wondered if there was anything bigger than the Woods.
And then, on August 24, 1914, she met Lieutenant Harry Colebourn. He named her Winnie and made her the mascot of the Second Canadian Infantry Brigade. Together they crossed the ocean to where the Great War raged. It was a time of close calls, thrilling triumphs, painful sacrifice, and great friendship. By war’s end, millions knew her name.
It’s not every bear who makes history.

This isn’t just a story for children. It’s a heart-melting tale for all ages!
Plus, the Canadian in me loves this WW1 homage to my home country.
Such a beautiful story!! 💛
I loved the illustrations throughout this book as well as actual photos and other historical facts. Winnie had a voice here as well as other animals which were a nice touch, though a little confusing as to who was speaking at times, but not enough to ruin my enjoyment of this little gem.
A great little book, perfect for bedtime storytime for all ages.
