Magical triples, dark secrets, magical beasts, and evil forces…
The mysterious Cheval triplets live a peaceful life in a secluded cottage on the edge of the Mystic Wood. Yet when their mother’s illness creeps her closer to death, the three sisters, Morganne, Amara, and Fae must leave their quiet sanctuary in search of a rare cure within the darkened forest.
But they are not the only ones lurking in the midnight shadows, so when fiendish witch hunters capture the sisters, their search for a cure turns into a desperate escape attempt. Their only hope rests with the exhausted, worn out horses pulling the cart to the witch trial, and the secrets the sisters keep locked in the deepest chambers of their hearts.
When they unleash the truth will it set them free, or send them closer to the burning witch pyres?

Desperate to find a cure for their mother’s mysterious illness, the sisters venture into the woods in search of a cure. Little do they realize their problems are just beginning. Something or someone appears to be following them.
Once captured, the girls are deemed to be witches. How will they be able to save their mother? Will they succeed in escaping or are they doomed to the pyre?
I was impressed with the writing. The author succeeds in creating a mood and getting the atmosphere right. For a book that is fewer than one hundred pages, the characters are remarkably well-developed. This is a clean read and would be appropriate for advanced middle-grade readers as well as teens and adults.

Ok, I get the point about suspense and the moral of the story - that family is the most important thing in the world. But other than that, there is no need for half a story. I have some questions about it:
Why does the mother never bother to tell her daughters she is a witch? Or that they are witches? Wouldn’t it be better to show them and teach them that magic is nothing to be feared of? Not to let them be “delicate flowers in the storm”.
Why are all three going to find a cure? It would’ve made more sense that at least one of the sisters stayed to look after the mother.
I’m not a fan of cliff-hanging ending either. Like there was supposed to be a very important moral of the story, but is somehow escaping us. Just because it's for children, doesn't mean the story shouldn't be smart.

Angharad's novella reminded me of the Grimms' fairytales - a dark premise with evil lurking in the shadows and villains that are creepy and cringe-worthy. This is not a light and fluffy story, but the dark beginning makes the ending that much sweeter. I loved the three sisters (triplets) and watching them discover their magic and then fight the bad guys. The last half of the story is full of action and Angharad's writing is vivid and flowery. It was easy to picture the fight scenes and to see the magic as the sisters discovered it. Not to mention, the type of magic in Witch Hearts is horse-related. My favorite kind!
This was a quick read and was full of beautiful descriptions. And, there's two more novellas in the series. Perfect for fans of Grimms' fairytales or Once Upon A Time.
