About the author

A Witch, teacher, author, registered nurse and self-taught herbalist, Elaanie S believes there is a great need for credible and dedicated teachers and leaders amongst the growing pagan communities of the USA. Born in South Carolina, reared in North Carolina and with over thirty years of residency in Mississippi and Tennessee, Elaanie has a deep understanding and compassion for the struggles of the non-Christian trying to live in an overwhelmingly Christianized society. It was only after teaching witchcraft in Mississippi for almost a decade that she realized that even many actively practicing pagans and witches continue to carry guilt and fear born of early Christian indoctrination. In June of 2017, she published "The Witch's Journey: Cutting the Cords of Christian Dogma" under her pseudonym, Elaanie S, to serve as a liberating template and guide to the spiritually and emotionally struggling witch and pagan.
As a nurse and healer, Elaanie has been practicing herbalism since 2008. She began by seeking out more natural remedies for her own purposes and later to aid others in self-healing and health maintenance . A background in healthcare provides Elaanie a strong foundation for herbalism and a solid understanding of the necessary caution and wisdom which must be practiced when consuming herbs.
Elaanie is a Temple of Witchcraft initiated and trained High Priestess who shares her spiritual path, passion and work with her husband, Rowann. They now resides in East Tennessee.

I was raised as a Southern Baptist, intent on entering the ministry until the ripe old age of seventeen. That’s when I realized I didn’t have the Christian faith necessary to minister to a congregation. What happened? Was I now a lost soul? According to the Southern Baptists, the definite answer was yes.
All religions boil down to asking some of the same questions. Who are we? What is life? How did life start on this planet? How should we live our lives?
We need not understand aircraft structure and engine design to hop on an airliner, and most of us enjoy the ride without knowing the basic concepts of flight. Likewise, we can accept the precious gift of life without knowing how or why this gift was bestowed upon us.
Paganism is rising in the United States, but one census says only 0.4% of us are pagans. Most of us know little to nothing about paganism, and it’s no wonder we have preconceived, erroneous ideas about pagans.
Bible belt churches are unkind to religions different than their own, and paganism is particularly caustic to many Christians. Some ministers in our area have charged their congregations with seeking out pagans and doing what is necessary to eliminate them. Only our prejudice overshadows our stupidity.
Enter Elaanie S and “The Witch’s Journey”:
As we approach Halloween 2022, the notion of the word witch conjures up images of women dressed in black, wearing a pointed black wide-brim hat, and riding a broomstick. Elaanie describes witches as people very different from the typical stereotype. In her world, witches are men and women on a journey to spiritual enlightenment. Elaanie travels on life’s journey attempting to answer questions not fully explained or poorly explained in Christian dogma. Elaanie seeks an understanding of her true self and purpose in relation to the rest of creation.
Like many of us, her parents raised her in the Christian church. Christian faith can be a great comfort. Elaanie doesn’t look down on Christians, and she affords them the right to worship in their way. All she asks is that Christians allow others the same right. Too often, freedom of religion to a Christian means freedom for Christians to practice their religion. That freedom doesn’t extend to others with different faiths. Christian churches in the United States lobby politicians to force all citizens to bow to Christian values.
The Pagan notion of everything being connected by energy isn’t far-fetched. It’s a well-known and undisputed fact the human body radiates on the order of 100 watts of infrared power. Scientists who have taken the time to explore this phenomenon say there’s too much thermal noise for any detectable signal. Just because they can’t detect it doesn’t mean it isn’t there.
Scientists are limited by technology and knowledge within the timeframe of their existence. Who’s to say what we will learn about ourselves and nature in the future? Maybe Elaanie and other Witches have already figured it out.

She logically and methodically dismantles all the many shackles with which scripture and organized religion keeps people bound and away from exploring alternate spirituality. Pointing out inconsistencies, plain errors, and all the many things that are not the way they ought to be, she shows that the church has been remarkably inept in putting its teachings and message into modern perspective, failed to show how they apply to modern life, or why they should remain relevant at all.
This description of how to free oneself from all those shackles, covered in three of the book's four sections, is what sets this book apart. It's really about the cutting the cords of Christian dogma, a challenge that is so difficult for many who seek to find themselves and engage in different exploration of spirituality.
In the fourth section, the author presents what's changed for her in regard to viewing the Divine and what hasn't. She then explains what drew her to Witchcraft and provides an interesting overview of Witchcraft, its tenets, concepts, symbolisms, holidays, as well as its uneasy relationship with the media and society at large.
Overall an altogether terrific and eminently readable book on a topic that I have no stake in other than my own concerns about organized religion and my appreciation of free thought, exploration, and a deep belief that anything is possible.

This book is perfect for anyone who has been questioning the confusion and restriction of Christianity, but has been too frightened or even guilt stricken to leave the confines of their birth religion. For those who have already taken this adventure, it serves as a reminder of the subtle influences Christianity has in perspective and judgement on our society as a whole and how easily we can fall prey to it again, even after having forcibly removed ourselves from that lifestyle.
