She also presents the enemy?a golden eagle?that, sensing the birth, waits for a chance to prey upon one of the defenseless pups. Regan's realistic oil paintings perfectly capture the animals' actions and bring their world to life. Scenes of mother wolf and her pups in the birth cave on left-hand pages face glimpses of the outside environment. When the young ones leave the cave, the illustrator switches to double-page spreads, allowing the sequence of the eagle's attack to play itself out dramatically. Several portraits of the mother and her babies and one of the eagle are exquisitely detailed. The play of light and shadow created by the deft blending of myriad shades of brown and gray results in a sense of depth, of wide expanse, of textured fur and rock-strewn hills. A brief, poetic picture-book celebration of the wolves in the wilderness and the birth and growth of four wolf pups. Muted brown and gray oil paintings show the events near the den (the pack howls) and above it--an eagle hunts. ``Down in the den/Deep in the dark,/One-two-three-four/Pups are born.'' Soon the pups, eyes open, stumble and tumble out of the den to play, and the eagle waits, until a wolf pup wanders after a cricket. Only the timely intervention of the father wolf prevents tragedy. The paintings capture the dignity of the animals, portray aspects of wolf behavior, and depict the rugged habitat in which they live. Especially effective is a spread of ghostlike wolves against grey rocks, as they ``weave like shadows,/Stalking a deer.'' A splendid complement to titles with a more fact-based approach to wolf life.     Did you ever wonder what would happen if you took the road less traveled by?

    This was a question I often asked myself.

    In 1992, I decided to head down a new highway.

    I left my lovely job in education and became a children's book author.

    Did I miss the children, teacher friends, Blue Cross and Blue Shield? You bet!

    But I wrote every day ( well almost), collected reams of rejections, and kept sending out manuscripts

    In August of 94, the first contract call came.

    Now 22 books later the days flash by with writing, researching, revising, submitting, rejections (Yes, published authors still get them), email, school visits, conference presentations, and book signings.

    My husband Earl encourages, edits, advises, takes pictures, helps with research , updates my website which he designed,and prints out maps to schools and bookstores.

    Laura Regan was born in Vancouver, BC, Canada in 1950. Her family moved to the San Francisco Bay area when she was three. By the time she was in kindergarten, Laura knew that she wanted to be an artist, and she followed that path through high school and into college, where she majored in graphic design. In her spare time, Laura would paint(mainly flora and fauna), and before long she was exhibiting and selling her original pieces throughout the country. In 1990 she started illustrating. Her first children's book was illustrated for Jane Yolen ("Welcome to the Green House"). Among the 13 books that Laura has illlustrated are three more books with Jane and four books with Jean Marzollo (of "I Spy" fame), including "Mama Mama" and "Papa Papa", and most recently "Pierre the Penguin"

    In 2012 Laura and her husband Peter moved to Austin, Texas where she started her own wildlife greeting card business using images taken from her original paintings. Laura & Peter enjoy all sorts of outdoor activities.....but they especially love visits from their 6 grown kids and lots of adorable grandchildren!
