For forty-five years, Robert (Chip) Wood has worked on behalf of children from preschool through eighth grade as a classroom teacher, teaching principal, and teacher educator. After studying at the Gesell Institute of Human Development early in his career, Chip made developmentally based teaching the center of his educational practice. His core belief: knowing what children at each age are developmentally capable of doing physically, socially, emotionally and cognitively enables respectful, successful teaching of all children no matter their life circumstances or cultural background. A co-developer of Responsive Classroom and co-founder of Northeast Foundation for Children (now Center for Responsive Schools), Chip has served as principal of two public schools and was co-founder of Greenfield Center School. He is a facilitator for the Center for Courage & Renewal and co-creator of Leading Together, an approach focused on strengthening the adult community of schools.

As a school counselor and a classroom teacher I found this a wonderful resource for finding quick information on the developmental stages children go through. Each staff member at our school was given a copy and we discussed it at staff meetings. Everyone seemed excited to have such an easy-to-read book that was packed with such valuable information. It has helped teachers to understand that often children are just behaving according to their developmental age! I'd recommend it to all educators and parents!

I gave this book to all of my student teachers and each of my own children with children. It is an easy read with each age broken down into a couple of pages written in bullets. (Easy to keep in the bathroom for quick intake of information....you don't have entire chapters to read.) It gives a quick snapshot of where a child is developmentally, socially, etc. and what is expected of a child at each grade level. I believe it is helpful for both parents and teachers in understanding what to expect (or what not to expect) from children at various levels of development. Remember that children develop at different rates, so read the age just before your child's age and just after your child's age to get a better picture. A handy and informative book.

I purchased this book for a graduate course for my teaching degree but have found it beneficial as a parent as well. The information is presented simplistically but contains a lot of detail. For parents, information on physical, social-emotional, language, cognitive growth, and motor ability helps explain why your child is doing what he/she is doing. This helped me better understand what my teenager is doing and why. For teachers, it provides information on reading, writing, thematic units, and math. The information provide details what is of interest to a particular age range. I used this to create lessons to meet standards that had an interest factor for them as listed in the book. It worked wonderfully! I would add this to my essentials book list!

I also do not have the benefit of knowing what kids need at different ages because I don't get to see the nuisances of their development as they grow before my eyes.
