Yes- it has a rechargeable lithium ion battery. Just started using this product a month ago. It has excellent suction. Also, it's great that you can leave it on the charger between uses rather than having to exhaust the battery between charges to extend the life. That's more info than you asked for...but hope it is helpful.

If you mean directly vacuuming the animals, I would not recommend it, since it is quite loud and might scare them. We bought it mainly for animal fur and cat litter spills though and it works great for that.

I have only had the vacuum a short time and not had to replace battery. You can get any type battery in q batery store. Google battery stores. Try Best Buy.
