What a life! Oh, wait...the book ends with the death of William McKinley. Roosevelt is not even president yet.
While reading the book, I found out that everything I previously learned about Roosevelt was superficial, incomplete.
Simply put, and more than anything, he had incomparable energy, a drive to excell, a desire to be the best at everything he tried. He left unalterable footprints everywhere he went, at anything he did.
What impressed me the most was his passage as Police Commissionner of New York and under secretary of the Navy. Both times, he took charge of a deeply disorganize and corrupt system and single handedly turns those around on sheer will alone. Thus, the impact of Theodore Roosevelt on American politics and society was more profound, more lasting, than numerous former US Presidents, before he even entrered the Oval Office.
I just can't wait to read the follow-up!

This book was a real eye opener to me on the politics of the day and how an assassin's bullet can put a man in the right spot at the right time. Although hungering for fame and a principal role in US affairs, it is clear that this Roosevelt would not get it except by an assassin's bullet. Despite extreme patriotism ad jingoism for a short while Teddy was the right man at the helm. This short account should be read by every American for an account of the unlikely way that the US became involved in Cuba, Puerto Rico and other former possessions of Spain.
There was a lot of self-serving and braggadocio in Teddy's actions but he WAS a brave man with personal style and resources and love of the people other American politicians could regard jealously.

This book tells the story of Theodore Roosevelt from his birth through 1901 when he suddenly ascended to the presidency. It is well researched and superbly written. It won a Pulitzer Prize--for good reason. I highly recommend it for any American history buff.

An absolutely fantastic read about the life of a one in a generation individual.
This is such an inspirational book, the man has lived so many lives within one that ended too soon.
I can't recommend this book enough to anybody, it is just fantastic.

This book is excellent for three contrasting reasons; primarily it is a detailed, accurate and revealing biography of, arguably, one of the finest statesmen of all time; secondly reading the book gives you a sense of a young Roosevelt's drive and ambition which inspires the reader to lead a more purposeful life; finally it is an exceptional historical piece which contextualizes the rise of Roosevelt within the second half of 19th century.
I've read the book twice now and I'm sure I'll be picking it up again in the future.

The book arrived which is a positive however even after purchasing a new one on-purpose I received one with scuffs and folds to the edges and with the front cover being slightly too small for the book which is a shame due to it being a Christmas present.

A good read. Not as good as the Caro Johnson biography but interesting insight into the US social and political landscape in the late 19th century (I've only got that far!) A long book.
