Mary Buffett and David Clark clearly outline Warren Buffett's strategies in a way that will appeal to newcomers and seasoned Buffettologists alike. Inspired by the seminal work of Buffett's mentor, Benjamin Graham ( The Interpretation of Financial Statements, 1937), this book presents Buffett's interpretation of financial statements with anecdotes and quotes from the master investor himself.
Potential investors will discover:
- Buffett's time-tested dos and don'ts for interpreting an income statement and balance sheet
- Why high research and development costs can kill a great business
- How much debt Buffett thinks a company can carry before it becomes too dangerous to touch
- The financial ratios and calculations that Buffett uses to identify the company with a durable competitive advantage - which he believes makes for the winning long-term investment
- How Buffett uses financial statements to value a company
- What kinds of companies Warren stays away from no matter how cheap their selling price
Once audiences complete and master Buffett's simple financial calculations and methods for interpreting a company's financial statement, they will be well on their way to identifying which companies are going to be tomorrow's winners - and which will be the losers that should be avoided at all costs.
Destined to become a classic in the world of investment books, Warren Buffett and the Interpretation of Financial Statements is the perfect companion volume to The New Buffettology and The Tao of Warren Buffett.

If you're new to the world of finance, or merely looking to augment your knowledge as an investor/trader, then this book will be invaluable to you. Though certainly based in long term thinking; there are innumerable insights within that will help you develop a deeper understanding of the inner workings of a company via its financial statements.

Super concise, super clear, the authors are guiding us steps by steps through the financial statements, explaining what every line means, how Buffet analyzes it and what are it's underlying implications. Perfect introduction book to financial statements and Buffet's way of investing.
You have never or almost never read financial statements and you're looking for a book guiding you through the 3 main statements, giving you an overview of the main concepts and telling you how Buffet interprets those concepts. This book is for you.

Nice easy read and straightforward for beginners.
I wish chapters were more than just 2-4 pages long. I also would have enjoyed them using different companies to compare rather than continuously use Coca-Coka or other holdings that Warren Buffet has.

Great book for beginners! Only caveat I noticed in the book was that certain stocks she advocated against having a competitive advantage are in Berkshire’s portfolio.
Aside from that it goes through the process of looking at financial statements very well’. Be sure to read the intelligent investor to pick up some other accounting gimmicks in order to form accurate calculations

The content is pretty abstract. For a person who doesn’t have much fundamental knowledge about financial statement, it’s pretty hard to understand. Also, I can’t seem to find analogy between the examples in the book and some financial statements from online, using the same formula to test understanding. I would recommend people who has some basic knowledge to get more out of the book.

Repetitive!
Reviewed in the United Kingdom 🇬🇧 on December 27, 2021Verified Purchase
I really wanted to like this book, really. Although the concepts and explanations are clear enough for a relatively inexperienced investor to understand, the sheer repetitiveness of the author was enough to drive me to the point of returning it.
If you like the saying "durable competitive advantage" then this book is 100% for you. Each short (1-2page) chapter features this saying at least twice. If you're really lucky, it appears twice in one paragraph.
Authors, I get it. Durable Competitive Advantage, but it felt like an NLP exercise and was enough for me to return the book mostly unread. Shame.

"Clickbaity" at best...
Reviewed in the United Kingdom 🇬🇧 on January 30, 2021Verified Purchase
Horrendously written, and "clickbaity" at best.. It's a shame, because the subject itself is quite interesting. But unfortunately the authors seem more concerned with making money off of Buffett's name rather than putting any effort into the book content itself. It's ripe with errors (difficult to do when covering the basics), and the authors compulsively sprinkle "Warren" and "durable competitive advantage" in what feels like every sentence.. probably to make up for the lack of substance.

I cannot believe I fell for this. Without doubt the worst book ever written regarding accounting, financial statements or Warren Buffet. each chapter is about 2 pages, each covering a different element of the accts. A 10 year old could put together a more informative book. There is no depth of analysis, no insight, just the absolute basics of accounting. and by basics I mean , basics. gross profit, / revenue = gross profit margin.

I thought this book was gonna theoretical but it's something you can apply straight away! May buy second copy as backup to first it's that good!

This book breaks down the financials sections of a company, providing a good insight about income statement, balance sheet and statement of cash flow.
It's not exciting but certainly useful.
