From the number one New York Times best-selling author of The Handmaid's Tale
Soon to be a Netflix Original series, Alias Grace takes listeners into the life of one of the most notorious women of the 19th century.
It's 1843, and Grace Marks has been convicted for her involvement in the vicious murders of her employer and his housekeeper and mistress. Some believe Grace is innocent; others think her evil or insane. Now serving a life sentence, Grace claims to have no memory of the murders.
An up-and-coming expert in the burgeoning field of mental illness is engaged by a group of reformers and spiritualists who seek a pardon for Grace. He listens to her story while bringing her closer and closer to the day she cannot remember. What will he find in attempting to unlock her memories?
Captivating and disturbing, Alias Grace showcases best-selling, Booker Prize-winning author Margaret Atwood at the peak of her powers.

The story that followed the introduction was expertly written and a real joy to read, just what I expected to find from a famous author. Unfortunately, by that time it was too late; the frustration and annoyance from the beginning section tainted the whole novel for me.
As a Canadian, I am proud that Margaret Atwood's writing has drawn international praise and I am sure the acclaim is well deserved. Unfortunately her style is not for me.
It is an accurate portrayal, among other things, of a time in Ontario before automobiles, electricity, cinema and paved rural highways. It is a retelling of the double murder in Richmond Hill in the eighteen fifties for which one perpetrator was hanged and the other, Grace Marks, while sentenced to death, initially, was commuted to life imprisonment. The question throughout the book: was she really guilty at all? It is a fictional account but rings veraciously and realistically true to the reader. There’s a little violence and a bit of romance or maybe I should just classify it as eroticism but it holds ones interest from page to page. A really interesting read.

This novel is based on true historical events and tells the story of Grace Marks an infamous murderess (or was she!) of the 19th century.
I certainly learnt a lot about religious beliefs and practices of the time and the changing attitudes towards mental illness.
However I did find some aspects of the sub plot a little hard to believe but maybe that was all part of Atwood's plan to add an extra layer of very dark humour to the story. I will leave it up to you, the potential future reader to decide.

So......thought provoking, fascinatingly sad actually......was she schizophrenic? Was she duplicitous? What would you have done? Was wearing a dead person's dress proof of murder or instead a sign of life at the time?
Many people will interpret in different ways....but that's the brilliance of an author.
As for Netflix version, I'll be interested....Will it be my interpretation/ view OR a different one of equal resonance?
Whatever, a great read, just like THMT, and thank goodness we have the opportunity to read, in between the not-so-different slavery of motherhood......which is unpaid.
