The number one international best-selling author returns with an electrifying novel of devastating secrets and hidden lives that probes the fraught relationship between daughters and mothers and the lengths we go to protect those we love.
What if the person you thought you knew best turns out to be someone you never knew at all? Andrea Cooper knows everything about her mother, Laura. She knows Laura has spent nearly her whole life in the small beach town of Belle Isle, Georgia; she knows Laura's never wanted anything more than to lead a quiet, normal life in this conventional community; she knows Laura's a kind and beloved speech pathologist who helps others; she knows Laura's never kept a secret in her life. Andrea knows that Laura is everything she isn't—confident, settled, sure of herself. Feeling listless, with no direction, Andrea, unlike Laura, struggles to find her way.
But Andrea's certainty is upended when a visit to the mall is shattered by an act of horrifying violence that reveals a completely different side of Laura—a cool woman who calmly faces down a murderer. It turns out that before Andrea's mother was Laura, she was someone completely different. For nearly 30 years, she's been hiding from the woman she once was, lying low in the hope that no one would ever find her. But now she's been exposed, and nothing will ever be the same again.
The assailant was a mentally troubled teenaged scion of Georgia law enforcement royalty, and now the police want answers about what really happened in those terrifying moments at the mall. Though she's being scrutinized at every level of the criminal justice system and her innocence is on the line, Laura refuses to speak to anyone, including her own daughter. She pushes Andrea away, insisting it's time for her to stand alone and make a life for herself. To save her mother, Andrea embarks on a desperate journey following the breadcrumb trail of her mother's past. Andrea knows that if she can't uncover the secrets hidden there, there may be no future for her mother...or her.
Filled with intriguing turns, surprising revelations, and a compelling cast of characters, Pieces of Her is Slaughter's most electrifying, provocative, and suspenseful novel yet.

The story itself is good and predictable but still a decent read and tells the story of Andrea's mother's life before Andy was born. Andy had no idea who her mother really was and after a shooting incident, she's hiding from authorities and trying to find out more about her mother.
I would recommend this book as an okay book, not one to keep you turning pages or keep you up all night. It is worth reading as a fan of Karen Slaughter.

A story of a girl, Jane, who was so besotted by a man called Nick that she would do anything he asked her to do. Not realising at the time that she was being coerced into his evil world. How much was she going to endure from this man before she realised that he was a leader of a cult?
After Jane became pregnant, things began to change. She began to challenge Nick in what he was doing. People were dying and this had an extreme effect on Jane. When her brother was dying she decided to turn herself into the police and snitch on all those involved in the killings and bombings in the hope that she would get a lighter sentence.
After serving two years in prison, in which her baby girl, Andrea---Andy for short--- was born, Jane changed her name to Laura, picked up her baby girl from friends who'd been looking after her, and was put into witness protection. But after thirty years passed, Laura's past began to catch up with her.
The story becomes more interesting. I missed out one star because I didn't exactly like the ending. Would be nice to have a follow-up to see how Andy and Mike connect; that's besides other interesting things about the surviving characters.

This book is hard to describe, without really giving away the story. Put simply, Laura, and Andy are a mother and daughter who don’t get along. The mother is an achiever, while the daughter is more aimless(?), which causes friction between the two. After a spree killer does his worst in the diner they’re having lunch at, Laura acts strangely, so Andy sets off to find out what’s up with Mom. Along the way, adventures, and violence, occur, and Laura finally starts to grow as a human being.
I’m not going to lie, and claim this book is akin to Dickens, but it’s a good fun, interesting read. I would recommend.
Incidentally, they’re turning this book into a tv series. I can see why. It’ll lend itself to episodic adventures, as Andy learns more about her mom. The weird thing is Toni Collette, who is cast as Laura, the mom is only 14 years older than the woman cast to play her daughter.
