Much like the Midwife Murders, 1st Case was a mediocre story at best. The main character was highly unbelievable. The situations she found herself in were unrealistic. The fact that the main character was some kind of child genius was never made believable either. The character was never fully developed and the reader was expected to believe that a 19 year old computer hacker could solve a case but highly experienced FBI agents couldn’t? To top off the ridiculous plot, the young girl sleeps with her superior then discovers that she is also in love with her best girl friend! Please, don’t insult the reader like this anymore.

I am very disappointed with this book. I stopped buying James Patterson books some time ago as it is quite obvious he us not the true author and they are written by the second name on the cover. I bought this as it seemed it would be a good story line. It isn't. The text is amateurish, the characters are not developed and a lot of of unnecessary garble is included. I always push myself to finish a book when started but this one is testing my stamina. I won't be buying any future books in this series. Not recommended.

I have read and thoroughly enjoyed James Patterson books for many years an avid fan. What has happened why does James Patterson feel the need to put his name to books like this. For me a ridiculous main character who may as well been named Wonder Woman. I do appreciate it takes an awful lot of skill to write a book. However, when James Patterson's name appears on the book you do assume you are buying quality. Never again will I be conned. Surely if you have made your fortune from a fan based business you owe them something better than amateur fiction. I can honestly say this is the first negative review I have written so that will evidence just how disappointing this book was for me.

I have read Patterson’s books for years but they are now becoming boring, predictable and unbelievable. We are lead to believe that a young rooky joining the FBI hits on her boss after they have been together for a few hours. They then apparently agree there is something between them. He used to be a great crime writer. But there are no decent plots anymore. I can read a book in hours but this took me days. I will not be buying anymore of his books.

I was first introduced to Steve Cavanagh's work with his book Twisted. I went on to read Thirteen and Fifty Fifty. These are all excellent. Solidly structured, they have the hallmarks of an accomplished writer who has managed to storm his way into the genre with some style. Plots that are imaginative and twists that wrong-foot the reader in a very entertaining way. Reading The Defence, which is one of his earlier works, it's difficult to believe that it is the same author. The plot and situations are ridiculous, the characters totally lacking in depth and all attempts at gaining empathy fall flat. I persevered in the hope of being surprised but was only disappointed. On the up side, Mr Cavanagh has most definitely moved forward and I'll be reading more of his books.
