It feels like a whole lot of filler. Things get over explained too often especially on things where the character then says "nah, I don't like this choice, let's discard it." It's a lot of fluffed exposition when it could be condensed or shown through actions by the characters. I ended up skimming chapters after a bit.
I still like the plot though. Going to get book 2 but likely end up skimming again.

I really enjoy stories with a powerful main character, though a careful balance has to be kept to make sure that the strength of the main character doesn't overpower the main character. The Primal Hunter does a great job of making sure to keep the story interesting with questions and mysteries that are arise throughout the book. The supporting characters add great contrast to the main character and are just well written. The novel does a great job of worldbuilding, fleshing out the omnipotent system and the universe at large. I can't wait to read the rest of this series.

Fans of Defiance of the Fall will probably like this series as it has many similar hallmarks without being remotely a carbon-copy. Example differences are: the main character in this book is an archer, not an axe-man; everyone starts in the tutorial, not just the 'cultivators'; less focus on Eastern notions such as meditating on a Dao; the universe in which Earth exists is more protected from the wider universes within the System and thus threats are mostly home-grown rather than imported (apart from interfering gods); etc. Note, I've read all three books currently out, so my review is affected by that.

Good points:
- likeable character with lots of things going for him, but also a number of flaws such as social difficulty and anger issues which help keep him from being a Mary Sue/Gary Stu.
- well-written and well-paced - I've lost a bit of sleep over the last few days because of this story!
- interesting world and good world-building
- some other good side-characters, some of which have only really started to be introduced.
- love the relationship between the MC and Villy!

Criticisms:
- a bit too much exposition sometimes, especially over choosing skills for his class and profession.
- some of the side-characters don't seem particularly 3D, though this may change once they come into contact with the MC.

In short, definitely recommended!

Typical omnipotent system controls the universe type story but done well and the nuanced way the gods and wider world is introduced into the book was well done. Couple of writing bug bears but nothing to detract massively from the story.
Couple things to improve for Book 2:
Firstly, put a full character sheets at the start and end of the book for important characters but only show the part of the character sheet we need during the story. They discuss stats, show us the stats page but don't show their skill sheet unless it is relevant to the story at the time. This happened every other chapter towards the end and it was a detriment to the story pacing.
Secondly, people describing Jake as someone with "eyes on his back" is silly when the well known "eyes in the back of your head" is already a well known phrase which reads better.

Great plot, I loved the story! There are some negatives, some lazy writing, having a character named jake and another named Jacob, obviously this can happen I real life two people who know each other having common names but for the purpose of a story I felt this to be very lazy writing and a bit confusing in the bigginjng of the story. Not sure if the author is English or Australian from the speech patterns used but having multiple characters talking the same way having the same speech patterns was a disappointment too, easily done when writing to have the characters all talk the same possibly the same way the author talks but each character should have its own individual speech patterns. Maybe it’s the first book the author wrote and the writing will improve? But these negatives don’t deter from the story and I’m jumping straight into the second book now

Whilst I found elements of the book repetitive it is a well rounded idea. Welcome to the new world we have been integrated into the multiverse and the tutorial is about to begin. A social misfit, a people pleaser and a sociopath all joined in one place. Of course what come next is a mixture of adventure, growth and manipulation that causes death and much to keep you on your toes. I do not like William but love our main character and the fact that he does not do things by halves and jumps in to doing challenges his way. All or nothing it is a refreshing tactic. I like the premise and cannot wait to see where it goes from here. Some strong baselines with an interesting levelling system.

Jake turns out to be a high functioning sociopath with the intense focus and lack of interest in others or their needs , he does his own thing finding an opportunity to obtain a rare class and thrives in the violent brutal game , unfortunately the majority of the other participants lack his focus and many simply cannot accept the new reality
