Another great book from k l Slater. I do not understand why this author isn't more well known in Canada. Most of the books aren't even available in print I have enjoyed every one that I have read. After reading one, I went out and downloaded the rest. As soon as a new one is released, I have to have it. This one did not disappoint. Full of intrigue and emotion, with some unexpected twists thrown in, this book is a great ride.

This is my review of Missing.

Eight-year-old Jimmy had died twenty-six years ago, a tragedy, being trapped in an old abandoned warehouse when someone had locked the metal door, and left him to die.

Samuel Barlow, the next-door neighbor, had been charged and was serving time in prison. Samuel’s mum, Maggie had lied to the police to cover for her son after murder of the schoolboy,

Jimmy’s big sister, Josie had been thirteen when he died.

Samuel had been obsessed with Josie…always watching from afar, and didn’t like sharing her with her little brother.

Now, years later, Samuel was free. And Josie’s eight-year-old daughter, Ivy is missing. Josie knows that Samuel has taken her daughter, for ruining his life.

Missing children are such a popular trope for psychological thrillers, BUT K.L. Slater puts her signature twist with an emotional punch on it and makes it such a compelling read. I was so excited to be granted early access to yet another of the Queen of Psychological Thrillers’ books. Slater knows that our human nature drives us to eagerly flip pages to learn the identity of the kidnapper in this trope, so she takes it up a notch and presents us with a story where the mother already knows the kidnapper’s identity. You would think that it would decrease the panic and that the energy spent searching for a suspect could be spent elsewhere, but it actually adds to the panic and frenzy because the parent knows what the kidnapper is capable of doing. In this case, Josie knows that he killed her little brother. The clock is ticking.

Readers will love the twists, yes, plural, and appreciate what it took for Josie to find the strength to face her past in order to move forward with her future. In exploring parenthood, Slater places us right in the middle of a parent’s worst nightmare, straps us into the rollercoaster and writes to emotionally invest us in the events as we breathlessly and white-knuckled take one twisty turn after another.

Like any great ride at an amusement park, the thrill-seeker will hop off at the end of the ride and line up once more to subject themselves to another adrenaline rush. It’s no different after turning the final page of a Slater thriller. You’ll be eagerly anticipating the next one. Guaranteed

Oh My Goodness!! Where to even start with this book. I've said before that I always feel safe opening a KL Slater book. From the first page I feel totally safe that I'll be guided along a tense and intricate path of incredible storytelling, colourful and intriguing characters and an ending that will blow my socks off. The story starts with a bang and doesn't let up right until the last page. Every time I think I have one of this author's books sussed she just pulls the rug out from under my feet, again!!! Throughout the book I didn't know who I could trust and who I couldn't as the characters were so brilliantly drawn and even after twist after turn there was one huge shocker at the end that I did not see coming. An absolutely brilliant story, expertly written and highly recommended.

If there is one thing I have learned from reading KL Slater's books it's that in stories like this, everyone is a suspect. The most obvious appear dark, dangerous and loathsome, as Samuel does, but are more complex than you think. While those who seem all 'sweetness and light' may have hidden agendas. This is a gripping story and I agonised for Josie. Her thoughts exemplify how people who are universally hated can often end up being blamed for absolutely everything! There is no mistaking Samuel is despicable, as revealed by a sadistic streak from a young age. In my opinion though, the real villain in this tale is Pauline, Josie's mother. The way she treated her as a child really got to me. But as the deeper elements of her past unfolded, I got a creepy feeling where this was going and my hunch turned out to be correct; although it is a very disturbing twist. Whereas the ultimate hero has got to be Maggie, who has sacrificed everything to protect those she loves.

I always enjoy K L Slater's books and this one was no exception. I was reeled in straight away!

This tells the story of Josie and her daughter, Ivy. Josie has had a troubled childhood and tragically, her younger brother was murdered when she was just 13. Samuel Barlow, the man responsible, has served a 25 year sentence for his crime, but is now due for early release. Only days after, Josie's daughter goes missing....

I loved the underlying menace conveyed throughout the story and found the characters realistic and well drawn. I especially empathised with Josie and her terror and despair at finding her daughter missing. There are twists and turns aplenty leaving you not knowing who to trust or believe. The final twist was completely unexpected!

If you've read any of K L Slater's books before, you'll love this. And if you haven't, what are you waiting for!

I love K L Slater's books, and I did almost love this one. It was a scene at the end when all is revealed that I felt is totally not only improbable but to my mind impossible. Things that happened during that scene have not been explained. I re-read it several times in case I missed something. I don't want to give spoilers so can't voice my concerns.

Not one of Slater's best. There's way too much page-filling with details of making biscuits along with repetition of parts of the plot, as if the author has to produce a certain word count. The number of coincidences in terms of characters knowing each other or being in the right place at the right time is far-fetched.
