A translation of a 1941 poster titled 大日本空手道天之形All-Japan Karatedo Heaven Sequence showing fundamental Karate techniques. From the introduction, by Funakoshi Gichin (1868~1957):
The All-Japan Karatedo Ten no Kata, Heaven Sequence, was developed from Karatedo techniques that were specifically selected for group practice and adjusted for beginners. Rest assured that this method is effective for solo training to develop the spirit and forge a strong body.
Considering that this method requires no equipment, no space and very little time, it is ideally suited to the busy lives of modern people. I would very much like this method to be adopted widely.
The Heaven Sequence is comprised of the following three sections:
Tsuki no Kihon: Basic Strikes (1-4)
Chudan Uke & Tsuki: Middle Blocks and Strikes (5-7)
Jodan Uke Tsuki: Upper Blocks and Strikes (8-10)
Kumite : Paired Training (1-6)

A Closer Look at the Sword Scroll Volume 1 of 4 Translator’s IntroductionSeveral years ago I completed a project about the 16th century Samurai Yamamoto Kansuke (1493-1561). The book, called The Sword Scroll, examined four sword fighting manuals attributed to him. These works, which were all published in the Edo Era, 1600-1868, explain Yamamoto Kansuke’s sword, spear, hidden weapon and military strategy. While quite similar, each of the four editions of Kansuke’s teachings in The Sword Scroll contained different illustrations and had other additions both major and minor. The purpose of The Sword Scroll was to remove any duplication of material within the four different versions and compile a single volume with all the information. This however, doesn’t allow each book to stand on its own, so I have decided to re-format each edition into a stand-alone volume. This is the purpose of the four-part A Closer Look at the Sword Scroll series.About the AuthorYamamto Toki “Way of the Devil” Kansuke was a hero of the century long Sengoku Era, roughly 1467-1600. Though partially blind and lame in one leg, Yamamoto Kansuke’s prowess as a military strategist was legendary and his methods became the subject of study. Each of the four editions used in A Closer Look at the Sword Scroll, is actually a combination of two short works.1. Military Strategy and Sword Fighting The Sword Scroll2. Military Strategy and Sword Fighting the Inner Secrets ScrollWhile each of the four volumes is identical in parts, each book contains interesting variations that collectively add a great deal of information to those interested in traditional Japanese martial arts and military strategy.

Translation of an early Japanese Manga from 1810. The story revolves around a group of men that get tattoos by the most famous tattoo artists in Edo (the city that became Tokyo.) The tattoos are so realistic that they come to life when the gang goes to sleep, setting off an amusing chain of events. This edition reprints the original woodblock-print book and translates all the dialogue with notations. An interesting look at early 19th century comic storytelling, society and how tattoos were represented in literature.
