This novel tackles so many social issues in a heart wrenching and totally understandable "community" setting. The strengths of the various players, all moms of kindergarten children are all faced with family dramas of their own while remaining steadfastly supportive of each other's surface problems centered on their children in the school. At once pulling you in to questioning who the victim is in some of the situations while admiring the strengths of the key players, basically the mothers, we find ourselves identifying with the moms in their struggles. We have been there. We have supported friends who have struggled as singles moms. We have wondered why a husband who deserted a friend with a young child now re-enters her life with a new wife and child. We understand too the excuses of the mom caught in the circle of violence - is it better to leave him and raise the children with his as a weekend dad or can she put up with the hidden ugly side of her life? These hidden lives are under the surfaces of the moms who put the lives of their children ahead of themselves believing that to be for the best - but is it really??
